    E' cosa nota fra gli studiosi che hanno avuto la fortuna di lavorare con Alessandro Giuliani come la retorica e la dialettica siano state temi su cui per tutta la stagione della sua fiorituraumana ed intellettuale il nostro abbia meditato. Chi si accinge a riflettere sui nsuoi scritti, non può avere mai l'avventura di non imbattersi in qualche consideraazione su queste materie.......Tutta la ricerca di Alessandro Giuliani è diretta a chiarire le strutture fondamentali di un emergente assetto sociale ed ordinamentale, fondato sulla pari dignità e sulla veridicità sia dei comportamenti che dei ragionamenti. Ed è solo perchè in tale assetto gioca un nruolo fondamentale un antico e nuovo tipo di logica, quella argomentativa, in cui si risolve per certi versi la stessa pratica umana, che il ruolo ed il significato della retorica vengono costantemente approfonditi....

Mentre in Germania il tema della comunicazione, presente già dalla metà degli anni sessanta, veniva sviluppandosi soprattutto sul piano filosofico a cura di Karl Otto Apel e sociologico ad opera di Jurgen Habermas, in Italia, in quegli stessi anni esso veniva affrontato su quello della logica della scienza del diritto, grazie appunto a Giuliani...

    Alessandro Giuliani è tra i pensatori del ‘900 giuridico italiano calati in un clima culturale in cui libertà e diritto non sono ne’ antinomici ne’ disgiunti, in modo da derivarne un concetto di giuridicità in chiave di educazione e autonoma disciplina. I suoi studi sull’etica e sull’economia gli consentono di cogliere la dimensione del ‘giusto’, ponendo a confronto quantità e qualità: questa fa da misura giuridica ed etica.     The series of DART workshops provides an interactive and focused platform for researchers and practitioners for presenting and discussing new and emerging ideas. Focusing on research and study on new challenges in intelligent information filtering and retrieval, DART aims to investigate novel systems and tools to web scenarios and semantic computing. Therefore, DART contributes to discuss and compare suitable novel solutions based on intelligent techniques and applied in real-world applications. Information Retrieval attempts to address similar filtering and ranking problems for pieces of information such as links, pages, and documents. Information Retrieval systems generally focus on the development of global retrieval techniques, often neglecting individual user needs and preferences. Information Filtering has drastically changed the way information seekers find what they are searching for. In fact, they effectively prune large information spaces and help users in selecting items that best meet their needs, interests, preferences, and tastes. These systems rely strongly on the use of various machine learning tools and algorithms for learning how to rank items and predict user evaluation. Submitted proposals received two or three review reports from Program Committee members. Based on the recommendations of the reviewers, 7 full papers have been selected for publication and presentation at DART 2013. When organizing a scientific conference, one always has to count on the efforts of many volunteers. We are grateful to the members of the Program Committee who devoted a considerable amount of their time in reviewing the submissions to DART 2013. We were glad and happy to work together with highly motivated people to arrange the conference and to publish these proceedings. We appreciate the work of the Publicity Chair Fedelucio Narducci from University of Milan-Bicocca for announcing the workshop on various lists.     Multifractal characterization of protein contact networks

    The multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis of time series is able to reveal the presence of long-range correlations and, at the same time, to characterize the self-similarity of the series. The rich information derivable from the characteristic exponents and the multifractal spectrum can be further analyzed to discover important insights into the underlying dynamical process. In this paper, we employ multifractal analysis techniques in the study of protein contact networks. To this end, initially a network is mapped to three different time series, each of which is generated by a stationary unbiased random walk. To capture the peculiarities of the networks at different levels, we accordingly consider three observables at each vertex: the degree, the clustering coefficient, and the closeness centrality. To compare the results with suitable references, we consider also instances of three well-known network models and two typical time series with pure monofractal and multifractal properties. The first result of notable interest is that time series associated to protein contact networks exhibit long-range correlations (strong persistence), which are consistent with signals in-between the typical monofractal and multifractal behavior. Successively, a suitable embedding of the multifractal spectra allows to focus on ensemble properties, which in turn gives us the possibility to make further observations regarding the considered networks.     Elucidating protein secondary structures using alpha-carbon recurrence quantifications

    Secondary structures of proteins were studied by recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). High-resolution, 3-dimensional coordinates of alpha-carbon atoms comprising a set of 68 proteins were downloaded from the Protein Data Bank. By fine-tuning four recurrence parameters (radius, line, residue, separation), it was possible to establish excellent agreement between percent contribution of alpha-helix and beta-sheet structures determined independently by RQA and that of the DSSP algorithm (Define Secondary Structure of Proteins). These results indicate that there is an equivalency between these two techniques, which are based upon totally different pattern recognition strategies. RQA enhances qualitative contact maps by quantifying the arrangements of recurrent points of alpha carbons close in 3-dimensional space. For example, the radius was systematically increased, moving the analysis beyond local alpha-carbon neighborhoods in order to capture super-secondary and tertiary structures. However, differences between proteins could only be detected within distances up to about 6-11 Å, but not higher. This result underscores the complexity of alpha-carbon spacing when super-secondary structures appear at larger distances. Finally, RQA-defined secondary structures were found to be robust against random displacement of alpha carbons upwards of 1 Å This finding has potential import for the dynamic functions of proteins in motion. ©2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
