Topology Optimization in architectural spaces: From logical to rational design domains
The research conducted on the applications of Topology Optimization (TO) in the architectural field is limited. This paper investigates the significance of assigning the right design and non-design domain and support conditions in the TO process and its effects on the optimization results. The existing approach of TO relies on defining the design domains in areas that are part of the structural elements. This research challenges the norm of where the structure is allocated to evaluate the results against the criteria of minimizing material. The study investigates the idea of interpreting the design domains in a more rational perspective, using anthropometric criteria to create efficient spaces with minimum material use. The methodology involves modelling a spatial structure that evaluates scenarios with different design domains, using the SIMP method. The research is part of the Material Balance Research group projects in Politecnico di Milano, where a case study is conducted on a roof canopy in an attraction park to investigate the results on a practical project. The study illustrates the impact of assigning the right design domain on the optimization process, not only on the performative and material distribution but in terms of meeting design criteria and creating usable spaces. It also reexamines the idea of optimization and highlights the concept of an optimized design not necessarily being the best design
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. materiali di costruzione. Lo scopo principale di questa tesi è trovare una soluzione ecologica per progettare il padiglione dell'IRAN
per EXPO 2020 Dubai. Sulla base di questa idea, una revisione esauriente della letteratura sulle strutture naturali e vive
e costruzioni eseguite. Quindi gli alberi locali di localizzazione dello studio (Dubai) sono stati studiati in dettaglio
con un punto di vista strutturale per trovare specie adeguate per questo disegno. È stata considerata la palma come albero nativo degli Emirati Arabi Uniti
come caso adatto per questo approccio per quanto riguarda la coincidenza della forma e le proprietà di resistenza strutturale.
Per quanto riguarda le considerazioni sulla progettazione architettonica, il padiglione è stato progettato in modo tale da essere un rappresentante
dell'architettura tradizionale iraniana e la sua qualità spaziale. Pertanto, è stato associato il design del padiglione
volte a costine e vetrate per fornire un richiamo spaziale all'architettura della casa iraniana. Il risultato
della parte di design era una cornice tridimensionale sospesa da un solo palmo. Il singolo palmo
e la sua struttura sospesa ha fornito un modulo che ha creato la forma generale del padiglione dal suo modulare
replica.
LIGHTBOX indica l'ambiente naturale circostante, cerca di indicare la capacità degli ambienti e
capacità di essere associato con l'industria delle costruzioni. Può aprire una porta in costruzione con meno dannoso
effetto sulla terra, minor consumo di risorse naturali e minerali e integrazione di uomo, natura e
architettura come unità simili.LIGHTBOX is a MSc thesis project about design and fabrication of a Tree-suspended structure with light-weight
construction materials. The main aim of this thesis is to fi nd an eco-friendly solution to design IRAN’s pavilion
for EXPO 2020 Dubai. Based on this idea, a comprehensive literature review about natural and alive structures
and constructions carried out. Then local trees of location of the study (Dubai) were investigated in detail
with structural point of view to fi nd proper specie for this design. Palm as native tree of UAE was considered
as a suitable case for this approach regarding its form coincidence and structural resistance properties.
Regarding architectural design considerations, the pavilion was designed such a way to be a representative
of Iranian traditional architecture and its spatial qualitative. Therefore, pavilion design was associated with
ribbed vaults and stained glass to provide a spatial recall to the architecture of Iranian house. The outcome
of the design part was a three-dimensional frame which is suspended by a single Palm. The single palm
and its suspended frame provided a module which created the general form of the pavilion by its modular
replication.
LIGHTBOX points out the surrounding natural environment, tries to indicate environments’ capability and
capacity to be associated with construction industry. It can open a door in construction with less harmful
effect on earth, lower consumption of natural and mineral resources and integrate human, nature and
architecture as a similar unities
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
