    Component-Oriented Systems are increasingly evolving and being adopted by both industrial and academic worlds. They have resulted from the advances achieved in both software engineering and distributed systems. Component models such as JavaBeans, COM, CORBA were presented as reusable components that can be composed together to get a complete software. At the same time, advances in distributed systems lead to another type of component models such as EJB, DCOM and CCM that treat the distribution as their main objective. Platforms conforming to these models support a number of middleware services that facilitates the distribution without explicit intervention from the system developers. These platforms can be seen as dedicated hosting servers of the applications' components. In our works, we concentrate on the EJB component model; we present an administration platform for a federation of servers cooperating to host a number of applications. The federation includes different servers with different configurations, characteristics, services and resources. Our main objective is to manage the deployment of EJB components in the federation depending on their needs to the available resources and services offered by the servers. The proposed administration platform is based on the JMX instrumentation platform. We propose a 3-level instrumentation model to collect management information from 3 environment levels: network and system low level, application server level, and components level. The administration platform gets all necessary information about the execution environment from this instrumentation platform modeled in 3 levels where all the elements are also modeled as managed objects. Furthermore, the administration platform defines a number of services to control the deployment management in the federation such as a migration service, EJB evaluation service, and EJB instrumentation service. Beside these services, we define a number of rules to consider while taking decision concerning the deployment process and the communication between the application servers. To apply a non-centralized management over the nodes of the federation, we propose deploying the administration services on all servers in the federation to get a distributed management

    Courtyard Housing in Midrise Building An Environmental Assessment in Hot-Arid Climate

    This study is an evaluation of the environmental impacts of courtyard integration in midrise housing in the hot-arid climate of Dubai, The United Arab Emirates. A computer simulation (IES 6.0) is utilized to measure selected parameters: thermal analysis, solar shading, daylighting and airflow patterns, and primarily to determine the overall energy reduction. This study is carried out in three steps: The first step, a comparison of conventional and courtyard models is carried out in six-storey buildings. The second step, a courtyard building is studied to determine design optimum parameters in which one variable changes at a time when all other remain constant according to a suggested prototype model (reference model), and the third step compares it again to the conventional model. The first step concludes a reduction of 6.9% energy for the courtyard model. The second step concludes that the optimum design parameters for a courtyard model is achieved with ten-storey height, triple-glazed opening, 40 cm-thick wall and 10-cm thick Cellular Polyurethane insulation material. The third step achieves 11.16% total energy use reduction for six-storey courtyard model with the optimum parameters. Finally, the study suggests guidelines and recommendations for efficient courtyard designs for midrise buildings. Furthermore, it extends recommendations of configurations to other different climates, besides the hot arid, in order to overcome the limitations of the proposed model

    Dans ce travail, nous cherchons à fournir un début de réponse concernant la gestion d\u27applications distribuées à base de composants et de serveurs d\u27applications. Nous nous sommes centré sur le modèle des EJB et des serveurs d\u27applications J2EE. Afin de pouvoir optimiser cette gestion, notre travail s\u27est centré sur deux axes : 1. Comment instrumenter et administrer une infrastructure de serveurs d\u27applications ? 2. Comment gérer le déploiement d\u27application sur un parc hétérogène de serveurs d\u27applications ainsi instrumentés ?. Pour répondre à ces questions nous avons cherché à définir une infrastructure de supervision et d\u27instrumentation permettant d\u27identifier toue les éléments de toutes les couches du système. Cette infrastructure offre un modèle standardisé de supervision directement exploitable par l\u27infrastructure de déploiement d\u27applications. De plus, nous avons défini une infrastructure de déploiement globale et adaptée d\u27applications sur une fédération de serveurs d\u27applications. Parmi les nombreux avantages offerts par une telle fédération nous avons étudié les possibilités suivantes : 1. l\u27évaluation quantitative des applications à installer, 2. l\u27optimisation du déploiement en fonction des ressources disponibles sur la fédération, 3. la relocalisation d\u27application en cas de changement du contexte d\u27exécution

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
