    Get PDF
Objective of this paper was to evaluate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on trade components (exports and imports) of Pakistan using annual data from 1975 to 2013. Engle and Granger two step cointegration method was used for conducting the analysis. This method was adopted because all the variables of interest were non stationary in level and stationary at first difference. Results provide evidence of long run cointegrating relationship as well as short run relationship between FDI and trade components. A rise in FDI causes both exports and imports to increase. Based on these empirical findings, we strongly recommend Government of Pakistan to focus on the strategy of investment liberalization as well as trade openness

Cultural Values and Economic Development: A Review and Assessment of Recent Studies

    Get PDF
Growing interest and controversy regarding the role of cultural values in economic world has been observed in recent years. This paper investigates recent studies regarding the effect of culture on economic growth and development. The independence of an individual could be down played by any sort of continuity and concession to the economic success. It is pertinent to view Western concept of tradition/modernity framework which advocates rejection of traditional cultural structures of developing world to access ‘modernity’. However, empirical research indicates the both enormous change in cultural values and the persistence of idiosyncratic cultural traditions even within “developed countries”. Similarly, various studies have contended that so-called “modern societies” are themselves entrenched in explicit cultures, although their institutions are following “universal” principles. They demonstrate that “the existence of such cultural continuity does not prevent a succession of forms of social organization in the same country that are different from each other in many respects”.  It is a matter of fact that causality is a difficult issue, nevertheless, confirmation is progressively in favor of a causal effect from the economic condition to cultural interpretations. Subsequently, the enormous challenge for economic growth and development still needs to view our comprehension that how the varied culture or social organization conversion in a particular given society is pronounced with more strong and resilient reference settings

The River water is an essential and crucial resource for not only AJ&K but also for the economic and food security of Pakistan. The collective impacts of past and future infrastructural development specially roads and dams combined with the veracities of nature through earth quakes and climate change poses new threats and raises questions about the current regime of water governance in the entire region. At present, multiple institutions control different aspects of water governance in AJ&K. This study is a preliminary assessment of water governance efficacy in the region. The study is exploratory in nature based on primary data collected from  key stakeholders as  informants using the method of structured interviews of key informants. PESTLE/ STEEP analysis is done based on SWOT regarding the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities regarding water governance in the region. The findings of this study suggest that the dis advantages of the current fragmented, multi institution regime of water governance in the region  are outnumbered by the advantages. Analysis of Natural Gas Diversion from Fertilizer Sector to Power Sector in Pakistan

    Get PDF
Pakistan is facing an acute energy crisis. The crisis in natural gas sector is just a symptom of a much larger problem afflicting the country’s energy sector as a whole i.e., the demand for natural gas as well as other forms of energy is fast outstripping supply. Pakistan’s gas supplies can’t support the ever-growing demand as they feed power plants, fertilizer companies, domestic consumers, CNG stations and other industries that rely on this fuel. As the energy crisis has worsened over the past five years, the government has consciously curtailed the supply of natural gas to fertilizer sector diverting it to power generation. The gradual reduction in the supply of gas to the fertilizer sector has been accompanied by an increase in gas prices. These two measures have adversely affected this sector and the current study evaluates the economic effects of this policy shift. With the reduction in supply and increase in the price of gas, domestic production of fertilizers has declined whereas their imports have gone up. The PEST analysis including the economic appraisal of two policy options – whether to supply natural gas for either fertilizer production or power generation - makes it quite clear that the supply of gas to the fertilizer sector has higher economic returns. However this appraisal is limited to a cost-benefit analysis and does not take into account the exogenous factors which may have a stronger impact on gas allocation policy. In the end the paper presents different policy options and concludes with a recommendation to undertake wider reforms in the energy sector aimed at increased production of natural gas, enhanced efficiencies in the transmission system and a rationalised tariff structure.
