In fact, although the Candida genus is commensal and a constituent of the normal gut flora, it is responsible for opportunistic infections and can become pathogenic secondary to predisposing factors related to the host, like a comprimised immune system (AIDS, anti-cancer therapy, transplants), excessive prophylaxis with antimicrobial agents, and use of invasive catheters. Large-scale surveillance for fungal infections has demonstrated an increasing incidence of drug-resistant fungal pathogens. As a matter of fact, a significant number of fungi species (especially Candida glabrata and Candida krusei) exhibited primary resistance to Fluconazole or were less susceptible to Amphotericin B. Furthermore, as a consequence of the toxicity of the currently used polyene antifungal drugs, which leads to interrupt the therapy, and the emergence of Candida species resistance to azole-based agents, there is an urgent need for developing alternative drug therapies. In our previous study we have disclosed the synthesis and antifungal activity of a series of 4-nitrosopyrazoles that mainly displayed in vitro potent antifungal activity at no cytotoxic concentrations and that some of these compounds were 4 times more potent than Amphotericine B and Fluconazole respectively against Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida Krusei [1-4] As part of our Structure Activity Relationships studies, we were interested in learning the influence of the steric and electronic effects of the substituent in position 5 of the 4-nitrosopyrazoles which had already showed powerful antimycotic activity. Therefore, we synthetized title compounds and evaluated their antimycotic activity (fig1). NNNCOOC2H5ONR R: a=H, b= CH3, c=C2H5 Fig 1. Synthetized compounds The 5-carboxiethylester group has made the antimycotic actity dramatically decay, confirming the necessity, for a good antimicotic activity, of derivatives in which the position 5 is free or substituted with little groups as a methyl shown the best antifungal activity. Current, Future and Ideal Family: Social Representations in Emerging Adults. A Cross – National Investigation

    No full text
Iconic dimensions, key themes and elements of normativity have been explored in the social representations of current, future and ideal family in a sample of young adults - still living with their family of origin - in their transition to adulthood and in the light of a cross-national investigation confronting Italy and Romania. A three-generational perspective has been moreover considered in the idea that relational pathways transmitted among generations can overlap traditions vs modernity. As a matter of fact, though the Theory of Social Representations just turned 50 years old, family as social object has been little explored by this theoretical paradigm, in front of a widespread and recognized clinical and psycho-social literature. Inspired by de Rosa’s modeling approach, our research project aims to investigate such SRs by the implementation of a multi-method questionnaire which includes verbal and graphical tools, projective and structured: a) FACES III, b) Zimbardo Time Perspective Scale c) hand-drawings, d) Associative Networks. Taking into account the transformations that at different levels and perspectives have characterized in the past decades both Italian and Romanian contexts, our findings interlace a complex dialogue between the different techniques used. Considerations about rupture and continuity between the direct experience of the participants (current family), their future expectations (future family) and what has been understood as a normative model (ideal family), will also emphasise how supposed changes within the given values’ system, could affect the representations of expected and idealized relational models towards both the perceptions of own current family and own heritage (family of grandparents)

How firms finance innovation. Further empirics from European SMEs

    No full text
This paper aims to evaluate the role played by different sources of financing when analyzing firms' attitudes towards innovating. The empirical investigation is based on a large sample of European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) observed over the period 2012–2017. Different measures of finance and several robustness checks are used to select a well-behaved probit model. The results show that the probability to innovate increases when firms use internal financing and grants. The same applies when funds come from family and friends, while no conclusive evidence is found for bank loans. Recommendations for public policy to encourage firm-tailored policies to promote investment in intangibles allow firms to benefit from innovation activities. European SMEs will also benefit from capital market developments and the advancement of new financial tools devoted to supporting innovation

Bond analysis of masonry structures strengthened with CFRP sheets

    No full text
The use of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) plates and sheets for strengthening masonry structures is a promising technique but further investigations are needed in this area in order to carry out design guidelines. A considerable world wide effort has been expended into investigating the bond characteristics between RC elements and composite materials but little work has been undertaken in the sphere of masonry structures. The present paper reports part of a research project, still in progress, devoted to the analysis of the bond performance between FRP sheets and typical natural stones utilized for masonry structures in Southern Italy. The test procedure will be given and the results obtained discussed. Two commercially available CFRP sheets and two different types of masonry blocks have been used in the first stage of the analysis. Bond stresses at the interface between the two adherents have been evaluated and slip values determined. The influence of the specimens geometry has also been considered as well as the bond length parameter

Social representations, ageing and memory: a holistic approach to cognitive assessment

    No full text
This paper examines how contextual (conversational) aspects and socially shared meanings might affect the participants' performance on a standardised memory test using the theoretical framework of social representations. A total of 97 members of centres for older adults located in Rome, Italy participated in a screening using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test. Prior to testing, a group of volunteers had organised a performance focused on events from the distant past, stimulating intergenerational reminiscence. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. In the first case, prior to administering the test, a psychotherapist talked to each participant about the performance, focusing on ageing and stressing the neutral aspects of its social representations, such as change and time. In the second case, performance was used to concentrate on positive aspects of the social representations of ageing, namely wisdom and experience. In line with the hypothesis, focusing on positive aspects of social representations of ageing (wisdom and experience) versus their neutral aspects (change and time) has resulted in improved performance on a standardised memory test. Practitioners (psychotherapists – experts in psycho-diagnostics) who administered the tests have been involved in the co-construction of the meaning of ageing, discussing a real-life situation: the common experience of intergenerational activity that involved the participants' memories of their urban environment

Analysis of Bond Performance between FRP Sheets and Calcarenite Stones under Service and Ultimate Conditions

    No full text
A crucial aspect when FRP plates or sheets are externally glued to masonry elements is the bond between the reinforcement and the substrate, as it influences in great extent the effectiveness of the utilized technique. Some researches have been carried out on the use of composite materials in masonry structures, however few studies have been addressed to the analysis of the interface behaviour. The present paper reports an experimental and theoretical investigation on the bond between Carbon and Glass Fiber Sheets and typical stones, utilized for the construction of masonry structures in the South of Italy. At this aim a push-off test has been assessed and the bond performance has been investigated, varying some significant parameters. The state of strain within the reinforcement, the ultimate capacity and the type of bond failure have been recorded during testing. Obtained results are presented and discussed. Among all the relevant influence of the substrate not only in terms of mechanical properties but also referring to physical properties has been found. In addition, the possibility to extent theoretical models available for FRP- concrete interface to the case of masonry substrate is investigated, allowing to gather their effectiveness for the analysed cases
