No full textHaji Gora Haji, born in 1933 on the island of Tumbatu, Zanzibar, represents a living archive of poetic and philosophical knowledge, which is transformed into verses with a characteristic voice enriched by dialectal features (from Tumbatu and Unguja). As a recognition of his life-long commitment to Swahili language and literature, the editors, Flavia Aiello and Irene Brunotti, decided to work hard on conceiving a publishing project of Shuwari, his poetical anthology or diwani, fashioned as a bilingual Swahili-English edition which, along with the poems, could offer some analytical insights into Haji Gora Haji’s artistry. The English translation of the Swahili poems and of the critical apparatus is by Flavia Aiello and Irene Brunotti

No full textLa scuola, nella sua dimensione di organizzazione sistemica in interazione con l’ambiente esterno, (Weik,1976) è chiamata a fornire risposte adeguate alle molteplici sfide del contesto, per un’istruzione di qualità per tutti e per ciascuno. Sulla base di tali premesse e prendendo in considerazione la peculiarità della scuola come organizzazione fondata sulle relazioni umane, il presente contributo mira a indagare le potenzialità dell’Appreciative inquiry (Cooperrider et al., 2013; Cockell, McArthur-Blair & Schiller, 2020; Sharma et al., 2022), un approccio di ricerca caratterizzato dalla valorizzazione del positivo in prospettiva inclusiva.As systemic organization which interacts with the external environment (Weik, 1976), the school has to provide suitable solutions for the multiple challenges of the context, in order to reach a quality education for all and each one. No full textElena Bertoncini Zúbková, internationally renowned scholar and esteemed teacher of Swahili language and literature, passed away on 19th September 2018 in Pisa, Italy. In this obituary, her disciple Flavia Aiello pays tribute to her life and her major achievements. She highlights that Elena Bertoncini Zúbková educated generations of scholars in Italy and across Europe who specialised in Swahili studies, and had a remarkable impact on the advancement of Swahili literary studies. No full textIn a paper which appeared two years ago, I outlined some of the main features of the contemporary taarab world in Zanzibar, which is undergoing great changes due to economic, social and cultural factors (Aiello Traoré 2004a). A recent development that I highlighted is the vanishing of women\''s taarab clubs. The greater participation of women within the groups of taarab asilia has strated, in my view, an interesting confrontation between the tendency of conversation of the codes which are identified as \"traditional\" and the innovations proposed by female members in music and performance, as well as in the production of lyrics, an area where many women are now regularly involved. I will concentrate my analysis on the taarab lyrics being composed by Zanzibari women, which are of great interest because of the variety of cultural and social backgrounds, themes, techniques and poetical sensitivities

No full textThis article has its roots in a project carried out with Irene Brunotti (University of Leipzig), the result of which was the publication of a bilingual Swahili-English edition of the latest collection of poems by Haji Gora Haji, a well-known Swahili poet from Tumbatu, entitled Shuwari (“The Calm;” Buluu Publishing, 2019). The aim of the paper is to analyse the poetry of Haji Gora Haji with a focus on this latest anthology, dwelling in particular on the great originality of his handling of the Swahili language, cultural repertoires and natural imagery, all essential elements of the poet’s long-lasting dialogue with other Swahili poets and with the readers of/listeners to his poetry
