    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Global species richness of dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata): latitudinal trends and insular colonization

    Odonates are mainly “sun lover” insects, and therefore reach maximum diversity in tropical regions, particularly in rainforests. Here, worldwide patterns of species richness of the order are analysed, by compiling a database of species numbers for 255 continental regions and 243 islands. Area, distance to continents and elevation for all islands were estimated, and their effect analysed on odonate species richness by means of linear models. As expected, a clear effect of latitude and insularity on the species richness of Odonates was found, with a maximum of  550 species in the equator for continental areas but only  200 species in islands. In islands, latitude, area and distance to the continent clearly affect species richness, but elevation had no significant effect. The continental countries with highest richness are Venezuela (548) and Colombia (543 species). Brazil (863) and China (818) have higher richness, but given their size were included in the analysis as states and regions. Excluding very large islands (New Guinea, Sumatra or Borneo), which are considered continents in this paper, Japan (209) is the archipelago with highest richness, albeit Indonesia (737) and the Philippines (306) have more species, but were analysed subdivided by islands. The proportion of Zygoptera found at the different regions was negatively affected by latitude and positively by the area, but not by insularity. In contrast, in islands the proportion of Zygoptera was not affected by latitude, distance or elevation, but was positively affected by area. These analyses highlight the ability of odonates to colonize even the most remote islands, places that can be sources of rapid speciation, as occurred in Hawaii or Fiji

    Large scale eucalypt plantations associated to increased fire risk

    To satisfy the high timber demands of human society, forest plantations, especially with fast growing species like pines and eucalypts, are increasing worldwide. In some European countries, the number of wildfires has been augmenting since the second half of the XX century, in parallel with these tree plantations. The record for wildfires in Europe is paradoxically found in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula, a region where broadleaved Quercus forests are the potential climax vegetation, with a humid climate, unfavourable for fire occurrence. The ecological and forestry literature have analysed fire occurrence with complex models of fuel accumulation and vegetation structure, combined with no less complex climatic models to explain why this region has such a high fire occurrence. Economists have concentrated on the relationship between income and fire. Historians, sociologists and political scientists have long ago demonstrated that several conflicts over land use and property are behind most wildfires in this region, but there is little interaction between these fields. Here I use official statistics about fire frequency and wood production to test whether fire frequency is associated to the use of pyrophytic species. I found that fire frequency in NW Spain can be predicted by the amount of eucalypt biomass accumulated in forest plantations. I further explore the relationships between intensive sylviculture and fire risk at a regional scale (the North of the Iberian Peninsula) and a large scale, the Mediterranean countries. NW Iberia peasants have traditionally used fire to manage their common lands, and used the same techniques to oppose forest policies implemented by Franco’s dictatorship, which continued until now with little changes. The use of highly pyrophytic species like eucalypts and some pines has exacerbated this problem, as suggested by the positive correlation between eucalypt plantations and fire frequency at the local, regional and Mediterranean scales.</jats:p

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Sperm removal during copulation confirmed in the oldest extant damselfly, <i>Hemiphlebia mirabilis</i>

    Postcopulatory sexual selection may favour mechanisms to reduce sperm competition, like physical sperm removal by males. To investigate the origin of sperm removal, I studied the reproductive behaviour and mechanisms of sperm competition in the only living member of the oldest damselfly family, Hemiphlebia mirabilis, one species that was considered extinct in the 1980s. This species displays scramble competition behaviour, whose males search for females with short flights and both sexes exhibit a conspicuous “abdominal flicking”. This behaviour is used by males during an elaborate precopulatory courtship, unique among the Odonata. Females use a similar display to reject male attempts to form tandem, but eventually signal receptivity by a particular body position. Males immobilise females during courtship using their legs, which, contrarily to other damselflies, never autotomize. Copulation is short (range 4.1-18.7 min), and has two stages. In the first stage, males remove part of the stored sperm, and inseminate during the second stage, at the end of mating. The examination of genitalia indicates that males have two horns covered by back-oriented spines, which match the size and form of female genitalia. The volume of sperm in females after copulation was 2.8 times larger than the volume stored in females whose copulation was interrupted at the end of stage I, indicative of a significant sperm removal. These results point out that sperm removal is an old character in the evolution of odonates, probably dating back to the Permian.</jats:p
