The Realisation of the Right to Climate Education in South Sudan
Mini Dissertation (LLM ((Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)--University of Pretoria, 2022.This dissertation has uncovered the extent to which climate education addresses climate change and its effects. The research establishes the nexus between climate change and human rights. It highlights that climate change affects human rights and as such human rights-based approach should be employed to effectively address it and its consequences. To meet this objective, the research examined the sufficiency and/or insufficiency of the frameworks applicable to climate education and that these frameworks be strengthened where the latter is the case. Additionally, the research exposed lessons and best practices from other jurisdictions and recommends that South Sudan be guided by these lessons and best practices in designing and developing its legislation and policies. It further proffers that climate education should play a leading role in addressing climate change as it has proven to be the most effective way of providing climate solutions.Centre for Human RightsLLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)Unrestricte
Effective fulfilment, implementation, and supervision of the validation and registration requirements for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects: a missing link in the achievement of the sustainable development objective of the CDM
Towards an effective cattle grazing and rearing legal framework: an imperative for environmental protection
When scholars write about environmental degradation in their publications, they hardly mention cattle grazing and rearing as one of its causes. Nevertheless, this activity, which has impacted the environment adversely, is a direct cause of land degradation, threatens the resources and ecosystem’s services that biodiversity provides, and is a threat to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15. Livestock pastoralism has intensified in Nigeria in recent times, leading to greater environmental concerns and conflicts over access to natural resources. A close scrutiny of Nigeria’s municipal laws shows the absence of any statute that provides for the protection of the environment from this economic activity except the recent anti-open grazing laws enacted by some states. This seems to account for the unsustainable management of cattle grazing lands among other factors. The recent conflicts, killings and destruction of properties between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria is one of the consequences of ineffective management of access to natural resources (land) and an ineffective regulatory framework for addressing the environmental degradation resulting from unregulated grazing, which are both exacerbated by climate change. An effective cattle grazing legal framework, it is argued, is imperative to complement existing environmental laws in addressing the environmental challenges occasioned by cattle grazing and ongoing tensions.Key words: Nomadic Pastoralism, Pastoralist, Transhumance, Ranching, Grazing Reserv
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
THE IMPACTS OF THE INFORMAL SECTOR ON THE ECONOMICS OF THE MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN LAGOS STATE: AN OVERVIEW OF ITS INCOME GENERATION POTENTIALS FOR THE VULNERABLE URBAN POOR IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
The dustbin economy is prevalent in most major cities of the developing countries especially in Lagos State Nigeria, where the urban poor partake in informal economic activities of waste materials to earn a living. This study arises out of the need to explore linkages between the informal sector activities in waste management and its economic potentials of providing avenues of income and employment opportunities for the vulnerable urban poor in the developing countries. Although the traditional function of the municipal waste management is to collect, treat and dispose of waste in an environmentally efficient manner, MSW has been rediscovered from a resource management perspective. This makes it economically imperative for the participation of the informal sector in the municipal waste management to maximize its resource potentials for economic benefits and environmental protection. This study undertakes a primary field survey of the informal sector scavenging activities at two landfill sites in Lagos State “Olushosun and solouous” and found that Scavengers are specialized in different types of waste items which they recover and recycle for sale. The result also reveals that informal sector provides opportunities of informal employment and avenues of income or supplemental income for scavengers in the dustbin economy to support and sustain their family

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
