2. Call for Papers
CfP: The Staging of Verdi and Wagner Operas, 13-15 September 2013,Pistoia (Italy)
The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca, the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française of Venice and the Association Amici di Groppoli are pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium The Staging of Verdi & Wagner Operas, to be held in Pistoia, from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September 2013. For further information: http://www.luigiboccherini.org/staging.html.
Organized in conjunction with the bicenteray of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, this conference aims to deepen the existing understanding of opera staging through examination of the the works of these two composers, focusing on the economical, sociological and technological factors connected with opera production. The conference also welcomes studies on staging, with a particular focus on visual aspects and their relationship with theatrical space: the tradition of establishing each visual element in writing (like the livret de mise en scène in France or the disposizioni sceniche in Italy) reflects the importance that staging had acquired during the nineteenth century in the sphere of musical drama.
The official languages of the conference are English, French, German and Italian. Papers selected at the conference will be published in a miscellaneous volume. Papers are limited to twenty minutes in length, allowing time for questions and discussion. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words and one page of biography.
All proposals should be submitted by email no later than Sunday 14 April 2013 to [email protected]. For any additional information, please contact: Dr. Roberto Illiano, [email protected], www.luigiboccherini.org
CfP: Audio Mostly 2013. On interaction with sound, 18-20 September 2013, Piteå (Sweden)
Audio in all its forms holds tremendous potential for interaction design. Sound can engage, inform, convey narrative, dramatize, create attention, affection and adventure. However, the abilities to interact with computer systems through and with sound are still not sufficiently explored. The Audio Mostly Conference provides a venue to explore and promote the untapped potential of audio for interaction design by bringing together audio experts, content creators, interaction designers, behavioural researchers and others.
The theme this year is "Sound for Information and Intuition". The theme covers ways sound can be used to play a different role in the future compared to now. How can sound for example be used in new ways and contexts to convey information and to put the listeners\u27/users\u27 intuition in play. How can we tap into users\u27 knowledge about and experience of how things sound to convey information in new ways? How can we design human-machine interfaces that can be used more effortlessly, interfaces that use sounds to convey information subtly, without demanding the users full conscious attention? Contributions addressing the use of sound and sonic interaction design in potential future fields are encouraged.
The Audio Mostly conference is interested in sound interaction design in general, is strongly interdisciplinary and provides a space for alternative creative approaches. Hence, prospective contributions are not limited to narrow themes.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Soundtrack of Conflict: The role of music in radio broadcasting in wartime and in conflict situations, 15.-17.09.2011, University of Göttingen
Since the advent of the mass medium radio, scholars from various disciplines have investigated both the positive and negative potential of radio broadcasting in conflict situations and in wartime, including as a channel of information warfare. The role of music in radio broadcasting in these contexts has however only rarely been addressed. This interdisciplinary conference aims to promote a global, historical and comparative approach to this issue, and we encourage scholars in the fields of musicology (all branches!), history, law, political science, social and cultural anthropology, sociology and other relevant disciplines as well as practitioners to submit abstracts for papers or posters relating to the general topic.

CfP: International Congress of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, 4.-8.09.2012, Göttingen "Music | Music. Structures and Processes"
Since around the mid-twentieth century, it has become increasingly common to use the word "musics", rather than "music", in order to do justice to the plurality of different phenomena to be captured under that term. This Congress will provide a forum for the discussion of research into musical structures, the structures that are necessary for music to happen at all, and the impact of the one on the other. It will promote the analysis of musical processes as well as the larger-scale historical, cultural and social processes in which musical structures in turn transform and adapt, just as the environment in which these occur is also in a state of constant transformation. Researchers are herewith invited to participate in this stimulating discussing by submitting proposals for symposia, round table, poster sessions and individual papers.
Deadline for applications: Free symposia, round table, poster sessions: 31.06.2011; Free papers/posters: 31.12.2011. Applicants for symposia, round tables and poster sessions will be informed of the decision by 15.11.2011, applicants for free papers/posters by 31.03.2012. Languages of the Congress: German, English. Applications may be submitted by e-mail (PDF format only please; the file name should include the surname of the applicant and the type of application, e.g. symposium, free paper) to [email protected] or by post to: Department of Musicology, Programme Committee GfM 2012, University of Göttingen, Kurze Geismarstraße 1, D-37073 Göttingen.

The International Congress will host the CIM12: Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology 2012. HISTORY, Göttingen, 4.-5.09.2012
Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: 30.09.2011.
The CIM series exists to promote and facilitate innovative collaborations between different areas of music research, musical practise, and other academic disciplines. By insisting on a minimum two authors/disciplines per paper, and through a peer-review system for abstracts, CIM both actively promotes exchange between different methods and research epistemologies and encourages excellence in these interdisciplinary endeavours. In 2012, CIM will tackle the subject of History. Hosted by the University of Göttingen, whose one time music director Johann Nikolaus Forkel is widely regarded as one of the founders of music historiography, CIM12 aims to promote collaborations that provoke and explore new methods and methodologies for establishing, evaluating, preserving and communicating knowledge of music and musical practises of past societies and the factors implicated in both the preservation and transformation of such practices over time. The focus will be the particular potential offered by interdisciplinary contributions to extending our understanding of music of the past, of its role in other social, cultural and political processes, and of processes of transformation of musical cultures and practices.

CfA: The Italian Journal of Game Studies: All of us Players. Pathways in the diffusion of digital gaming: relocations, pervasiveness, gamification.
For its first issue, G|A|M|E proposes an inquiry into the diffusion of the videogame medium outside of its established contexts: a phenomenon that leads us to reconsider the object of our research as part of a wider media ecology. Transformations in interface design make it difficult to map the boundaries of video gaming as a field, and, with the spread of a ludic paradigm, many other products are being turned into games. From the logic of gamification to geo-localization, and from mobile applications to the ludic sociability of Farmville, we are witnessing videogames\u27 invasion of the spaces and temporalities of everyday life. We are inviting scholars from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines to tackle this subject, focusing on the issues specific to this new challenge in the field of game studies.
Submitting a proposal G|AM|E welcomes any proposals concerning the general theoretical issues of this CFP, as well as analyses of one or more significant texts (videogames, audio-visuals, books and graphic novels, etc.). Proposals may be submitted in both Italian and English. Abstracts should not exceed 800 (eight hundred) words, not including bibliography. Completed articles will be accepted for review. Final contributions should not exceed the limit of 5.000 (five thousand) words, or 30.000 characters. All proposals will undergo an anonymous peer review process. Song, Stage and Screen VII: The Musical’s Global Conquest, 2.-5.7.2012, University of Groningen, Netherlands
In July there is the annual conference of the academic journal, Studies in Musical Theatre, which is published by Intellect Press.
The New York Times has frequently reported on the increasingly global musical theatre community. Broadway flops are finding success in Europe and China\u27s economic power is stimulating a musical theatre industry aspiring to enter the global market. This conference invites papers investigating the range of global contexts within which stage and film musicals are created, circulated and consumed. While much growth has occurred in recent decades, musicals have been circulated transnationally for more than a century, and forms such as the American musical developed out of a range of cultural influences.

VII.

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
