Measurement of the energy dependence of the total photon–proton cross section at HERA

No full text
The energy dependence of the photon–proton total cross section, Sigma_tot_gamma-p, was determined from e+p scattering data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three values of the center-of-mass energy, W, of the γp system in the range 194<W<296 GeV. This is the first determination of the W dependence of Sigma_tot_gamma-p from a single experiment at high W

Combined inclusive diffractive cross sections measured with forward proton spectrometers in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA

No full text
A combination of the inclusive diffractive cross section measurements made by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA is presented. The analysis uses samples of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering data at a centre-of-mass energy √s= 318 Gev where leading protons are detected by dedicated spectrometers. Correlations of systematic uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in an improved precision of the cross section measurement which reaches 6 % for the most precise points. The combined data cover the range 2.5 < Q 2 < 200 GeV 2 in photon virtuality, 0.00035 < xP < 0.09 in proton fractional momentum loss, 0.09 <{pipe}t{pipe}< 0.55 GeV 2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 0.0018 < β <0.816 in β=x/xP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. © 2012 The Author(s)

Measurement of the HγγH \rightarrow \gamma \gamma and HZZ4H \rightarrow ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell cross-sections in pp collisions at s=13.6\sqrt{s}=13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive Higgs boson production cross-section is measured in the di-photon and the ZZ4ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell decay channels using 31.4 and 29.0 fb1^{-1} of pp collision data respectively, collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13.6\sqrt{s}=13.6 TeV\text {TeV}. To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel’s detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. These measured fiducial cross-sections are σfid,γγ=\sigma _{\textrm{fid},\gamma \gamma } = 7613+1476^{+14}_{-13} fb, and σfid,4=\sigma _{\textrm{fid},4 \ell } = 2.80±0.742.80\, \pm \, 0.74 fb, in agreement with the corresponding Standard Model predictions of 67.6±3.767.6 \pm 3.7 fb and 3.67±0.193.67 \pm 0.19 fb. Assuming Standard Model acceptances and branching fractions for the two channels, the fiducial measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space yielding total cross-sections of σ(ppH)=6711+12\sigma (pp \rightarrow H) = 67^{+12}_{-11} pb and 46±1246 \pm 12 pb at 13.6 TeV\text {TeV} from the di-photon and ZZ4ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell measurements respectively. The two measurements are combined into a total cross-section measurement of σ(ppH)=58.2±8.7\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)= 58.2 \pm 8.7 pb, to be compared with the Standard Model prediction of σ(ppH)SM=59.9±2.6\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)_\textrm{SM} = 59.9 \pm 2.6 pb

Study of (W/Z)H production and Higgs boson couplings using H→ W W ∗ decays with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson production in association with a W or Z boson, in the H!WW decay channel, is performed with a data sample collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies p s = 7TeV and 8TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb−1 and 20.3 fb−1, respectively. The WH production mode is studied in two-lepton and three-lepton final states, while twolepton and four-lepton final states are used to search for the ZH production mode. The observed significance, for the combined WH and ZH production, is 2.5 standard deviations while a significance of 0.9 standard deviations is expected in the Standard Model Higgs boson hypothesis. The ratio of the combined WH and ZH signal yield to the Standard Model expectation, μV H, is found to be μV H = 3.0+1.3 −1.1 (stat.)+1.0 −0.7 (sys.) for the Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV. The WH and ZH production modes are also combined with the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production modes studied in the H ! WW ! ` ` decay channel, resulting in an overall observed significance of 6.5 standard deviations and μggF+VBF+VH = 1.16+0.16 −0.15(stat.)+0.18 −0.15(sys.). The results are interpreted in terms of scaling factors of the Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons ( V ) and fermions ( F ); the combined results are

Measurement of inelastic J/ψ and ψ′ photoproduction at HERA

No full text
The cross sections for inelastic photoproduction of J/ψ and ψ′ mesons have been measured in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb−1 collected in the period 1996–2007. The ψ′ to J/ψ cross section ratio was measured in the range 0.55 1 GeV. Theoretical predictions within the non- relativistic QCD framework including NLO colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions were compared to the data, as were predictions based on the kT -factorisation approach

Angular correlations in three-jet events in ep collisions at HERA

No full text
Three-jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and photoproduction was investigated with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of up to 127pb -1. Measurements of differential cross sections are presented as functions of angular correlations between the three jets in the final state and the proton-beam direction. These correlations provide a stringent test of perturbative QCD and show sensitivity to the contributions from different color configurations. Fixed-order perturbative calculations assuming the values of the color factors C F, C A, and T F as derived from a variety of gauge groups were compared to the measurements to study the underlying gauge group symmetry. The measured angular correlations in the deep inelastic ep scattering and photoproduction regimes are consistent with the admixture of color configurations as predicted by SU(3) and disfavour other symmetry groups, such as SU(N) in the limit of large N. © 2012 American Physical Society

Measurement of charm fragmentation fractions in photoproduction at HERA

No full text
The production of D 0, D *+, D +, Ds + and Λc + charm hadrons and their antiparticles in ep scattering at HERA has been studied with the ZEUS detector, using a total integrated luminosity of 372 pb-1. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into a particular charm hadron were derived. In addition, the ratio of neutral to charged D-meson production rates, the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, and the stangeness-suppression factor have been determined. The measurements have been performed in the photoproduction regime. The charm hadrons were reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum p T > 3.8 GeV and pseudorapidity |η| < 1.6. The charm fragmentation fractions are compared to previous results from HERA and from e + e - experiments. The data support the hypothesis that fragmentation is independent of the production process

Production of Z0 bosons in elastic and quasi-elastic ep collisions at HERA

No full text
The production of Z0 bosons in the reaction ep→eZ0p(∗), where p(∗) stands for a proton or a low- mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb−1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on ηmax < 3.0, where ηmax is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep → eZ0p(∗) was measured to be σ(ep → eZ0p(∗)) =0.13 ± 0.06(stat.) ± 0.01(syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z0 production in ep collisions

Measurement of the total and differential Higgs boson production cross-sections at s s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector by combining the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ and H → γγ decay channels

No full text
Abstract The total and differential Higgs boson production cross-sections are measured through a combined statistical analysis of the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ and H → γγ decay channels. The results are based on a dataset of 139 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured total Higgs boson production cross-section is 55.5 − 3.8 + 4.0 55.53.8+4.0 {55.5}_{-3.8}^{+4.0} pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction of 55.6 ± 2.5 pb. All results from the two decay channels are compatible with each other, and their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions. A combined statistical interpretation of the measured fiducial cross-sections as a function of the Higgs boson transverse momentum is performed in order to probe the Yukawa couplings to the bottom and charm quarks. A similar interpretation is performed by including also the constraints from the measurements of Higgs boson production in association with a W or Z boson in the H → b b ¯ bb b\overline{b} and c c ¯ cc c\overline{c} decay channels
