THROUGH THE LENS: Exploring African Immigrants Youth Culture and Identity through Photovoice

    No full text
The youth population of Finland is increasingly multicultural, it is, therefore, important to establish ways for the youth to influence and participate in the society at the same time not ignoring their own culture and identity. These may include the nature and contexts in which the immigrant youth live, learn, play, and work. The cultures of these youth received in their host countries and the factors that shape their individual development in society. This thesis project aims to bring awareness and kickstart an interactive discourse on Finland's African immigrant youth culture and identity. This thesis project was done through Photovoice, a type of Participatory Photography whereby participants are given cameras to document their life experiences within a selected topic. In this project, participants were asked to take pictures of their culture and identity as African youth living in Finland. After the photovoice projects, the findings revealed pictures of participants' natural hair journeys as an essential part of their culture and identity. Participants reveal how embarking on their “natural hair journey” has taught them many important life lessons, which have helped them accept who they are as Africans no matter where they find themselves. The “natural hair journey” here refers to their decision to keep their natural hair without adding any sort of external chemicals to it. The findings also showed how their natural hair journey has informed and guided their life decisions and experiences. In collaboration with Think Africa, the thesis seeks to provide a platform and opportunity for African youth to discuss and showcase their identity and culture to the Finnish society

A Unified Framework for the <i>H</i>∞ Mixed-Sensitivity Design of Fixed Structure Controllers through Putinar Positivstellensatz

In this paper, we present a novel technique to design fixed structure controllers, for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems, through an H∞ mixed sensitivity approach. We first define the feasible controller parameter set, which is the set of the controller parameters that guarantee robust stability of the closed-loop system and the achievement of the nominal performance requirements. Then, thanks to Putinar positivstellensatz, we compute a convex relaxation of the original feasible controller parameter set and we formulate the original H∞ controller design problem as the non-emptiness test of a set defined by sum-of-squares polynomials. Two numerical simulations and one experimental example show the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Retina Identification Database (RIDB)

Retina Identification DataBase (RIDB) is comprised of Retinal Fundus Images captured using the TOPCON-TRC camera. The dataset contains 100 images with 1504 x 1000 resolution compressed in JPEG format, captured from 20 individuals ( five samples per person ) with no retinal disease. RIDB has been used for training and testing of a retinal recognition system. Retinal recognition is amongst the most accurate mechanisms of biometrics and is being used for person authentication and identification

Review of Text Clustering Methods and Suggested Solutions for Theme Based Clustering of the Quran

In the datasets, documents of modern, unedited, and unmarked Arabic texts were utilised, which consisted of a sample of nearly 1,680 documents obtained from various online Arabic resources. The testing dataset comprised of four fields, namely: art, economics, politics, and sports articles. The other dataset collection consisted of 383,872 Arabic documents, which were primarily newswire dispatches as released by the Agency France Press (AFP) between years 1994 and 2000. Standard TREC classes and ground truth were thus established for this collection, whereby 10 classes were thus classified as part of TREC 2001. The last datasets is the Qur'an data, which converted from softcopy to database to contactes with each chapters and verses
