Stable foliations and CW-structure induced by a Morse-Smale gradient-like flow
We prove that a Morse-Smale gradient-like flow on a closed manifold has a "system of compatible invariant stable foliations"that is analogous to the object introduced by Palis and Smale in their proof of the structural stability of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms and flows, but with finer regularity and geometric properties. We show how these invariant foliations can be used in order to give a self-contained proof of the well-known but quite delicate theorem stating that the unstable manifolds of a Morse-Smale gradient-like flow on a closed manifold M are the open cells of a CW-decomposition of M
Global stable manifolds in holomorphic dynamics under bunching conditions
We prove that the stable manifold of every point in a compact hyperbolic invariant set of a holomorphic automorphism of a complex manifold is biholomorphic to a complex vector space, provided that a bunching condition, which is weaker than the classical bunching condition for linearizability, holds
Infinite-Volume States with Irreducible Localization Sets for Gradient Models on Trees
We consider general classes of gradient models on regular trees with spin values in a countable Abelian group S such as Z \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}\end{document} or Z q \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}\end{document} . This includes unbounded spin models like the p-SOS model and finite-alphabet clock models. Under a strong coupling (low temperature) condition on the interaction, we prove the existence of families of distinct homogeneous tree-indexed Markov chain Gibbs states mu A \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}\end{document} whose single-site marginals concentrate on a given finite subset A subset of S \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}\end{document} of spin values. The existence of such states is a new and robust phenomenon which is of particular relevance for infinite spin models. These states are extremal in the set of homogeneous Gibbs states, and in particular cannot be decomposed into homogeneous Markov-chain Gibbs states with a single-valued concentration center. Whether they are also extremal in the set of all Gibbs states remains an open, challenging question. As a further application of the method we obtain the existence of new types of gradient Gibbs states with Z \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}\end{document} -valued spins, whose single-site marginals do not localize, but whose correlation structure depends on the finite set A, where we provide explicit expressions for the correlation between the height-increments along disjoint edges
The 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide mutational spectrum in single stranded DNA is characterized by guanine to pyrimidine transversions.
4-Nitroquinoline-1-oxide is a potent mutagen and carcinogen which induces two main guanine adducts at positions C8 and N2. In ds or ss damaged DNA the ratio C8/N2 adducts is 1:2 and 8-10:1, respectively. In bacteria and yeast 4NQO has been shown to be a base substitution mutagen acting at G residues inducing mainly G to A transitions. We determined the mutational spectrum induced by the 4NQO metabolite, acetoxy-4-aminoquinoline 1-oxide, in the M13lacZ'/E. coli lacZ delta M15 alpha complementation assay using ssDNA. Among 68 Ac-4HAQO induced mutants, G to Pyr transversion was the most frequent base substitution observed. By comparison with dsDNA based systems, our data suggest that dGuo-C8-AQO induces G to Pyr transversions. A mechanism to explain how this lesion may induce transversions is proposed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
