Oxidative stress in dyslipidemia
The effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on the balance of oxidants/antioxidants is not well studied, but there is a growing evidence that oxidative stress is involved in atherosclerosis. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of radiofrequency EMR on the oxidative stress status and the level of serum lipids in broadcasting (BC) and TV station operators. 49 BC and 61 TV station operators and control group of 110 operators, matched by sex and age, were studied. The EMR was assessed and the time-weighted average (TWA) was calculated. The malondialdehyde (MDA), as an index of oxidative stress, was determined with spectrofluorimetric method and the lipid indices were assessed with enzyme tests. A highly significant effect of radiofrequency EMR on MDA and on lipid indices studied was found, the greatest on MDA, followed by low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC). The MDA correlated with TWA. The multiple regression analysis showed that the MDA values were predicted by TC and TWA, and MDA and TWA participated in the regression equations of TC and LDL-C. Our data show that the radiofrequency EMR contributes to oxidative stress and dyslipidemia in BC and TV station operators
Increased free malondialdehyde concentrations in smokers normalise with a mixed fruit and vegetable juice concentrate : a pilot study
Background: Cigarette smoking, a cardiovascular risk factor leading to oxygen free radical formation, is involved in the development of serious pathological conditions. On the other hand, a healthy diet and adequate supplementation can help prevent many diseases. The aim of our study was to evaluate in healthy light smokers the effects of supplementation with mixed fruit and vegetable juice powder concentrate on homocysteine metabolism and oxidative status. Methods: In this pilot study, 32 healthy volunteers, 16 light smokers and 16 non-smokers, on twice daily supplementation were monitored at time zero and after 30 days. Plasma homocysteine, and serum vitamin B(12) and folate concentrations were measured by immunoenzymatic assays; reactive oxygen species, total antioxidant capacity and thiol groups by spectrophotometric methods; and total and free malondialdehyde concentrations by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with isotopic dilution. Results: Baseline free malondialdehyde concentrations were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers and normalised after 30-day supplementation. Baseline results for all the other parameters remained unchanged after supplementation, with no significant differences between smokers and non-smokers. Erythocyte ferritin concentration : analytical performance of the immunoenzymatic IMx-Ferritin (Abbott) assay
Together with serum ferritin, erythrocyte ferritincan be a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating the degree of impaired iron metabolism in different diseases. We collected peripheral blood samples from 64 subjects (22 healthy volunteers, 20 patients with hereditary hemochromatosis, and 22 patients on regular hemodialysis with secondary anemia) to evaluate whether an immunoenzymatic method generally used for serum ferritin can also be used to determine erythrocyte ferritin levels under various conditions of body iron status. Serum and erythrocyte ferritin levels were assayed in parallel using a microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA) IMx-Ferritin kit and an IMx analyzer. The inter-assay imprecision of the serum and erythrocyte ferritin assays was 4.9% and 5.05%, the intra-assay imprecision was 2.2% and 2.3%, and the mean recovery was 102% (range 96-105%) and 101% (range 99-105%), respectively. Both serum and erythrocyte ferritin assays showed a detection limit of 1 microg/L and good linearity (R(2) = 0.99) in the intervals 13.9-443 and 3.9-135.6 microg/L, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that the IMx-Ferritin assay currently used to measure serum ferritin levels can also be adopted to measure erythrocyte ferritin insofar as it clearly discriminates high and low erythrocyte ferritin levels in cases of both iron overload and deficiency
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
