1990-1998 : La genèse d'un bassin parisien politique

    No full text
Under the last ten years, the Paris Basin has been the stage for attempts in cooperation in regional planning and of struggles between the local governments of different levels. The author has been following the process as academic as well as consultant. This paper gives her analysis of the changing strategies of the local governments in this period, which appears as a first step in building of a political Paris Basin. Geppert-Hebrard Anna. 1990-1998 : La genèse d'un bassin parisien politique. An exploration of the relationship between language choice in CEO letters to shareholders and corporate reputation

    No full text
This paper proposes a taxonomy to assist in more clearly locating research on aspects of the association between corporate reputation and corporate accountability reporting. We illustrate how our proposed taxonomy can be applied by using it to frame our exploration of the relationship between measures of reputation and characteristics of the language choices made in CEO letters to shareholders. Using DICTION 5.0 software we analyse the content of the CEO letters of 23 high reputation US firms and 23 low reputation US firms. Our results suggest that company size and visibility each have a positive influence on the extent to which corporate reputation is associated with the language choices made in CEO letters. These results, which are anomalous when compared with those of Geppert and Lawrence (2008), highlight the need for caution when assessing claims about the effects on corporate reputation arising from the language choice in narratives in corporate annual reports.         Author has checked copyrightDG 16/11/12Names JG 2012-11-1

    Let us teach for real!

Before we even noticed, electronic devices and the internet have invaded our lives and our universities. Far from being just an instrument, they change the way we teach, whether we want it or not. Unfortunately, instead of helping, they carry negative effects, well documented by research in psychology, psychiatry and neuroimaging over the last decade. They affect our attention, our memory, and our social skills. Without even being aware of it, we are playing the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Since 2011, the author has banned the digital and reinvigorated traditional teaching methods: a demanding, yet hugely rewarding experience. The present paper is a vibrant plea by a scholar to fellow scholars: let us get rid of the virtual! Let us teach for real

Record documentation of AFTO 781 series in the aspect of safety of operation of F-16 aircraft at Poznan - Krzesiny airport. Analysis of experience in 2010 - 2020

The purpose of the article is to present the conclusions and discuss the results of research outcome from the implementation and use of AFTO 781 record documentation in the formation of safety in the process of operation of a multirole aircraft F-16 C/D Block 52+ at Poznan - Krzesiny Airport in 2010 - 2020. Methods: Surveying and analyzing archival documents for comparison in the context of verifying the reliability of data. Results: The result of the conducted research is the presentation of research results and conclusions resulting from several years of use of AFTO 781 record documentation in the process of operation of F-16 C/D Block 52+ multirole aircraft at Poznan - Krzesiny Airport in 2010 - 2020. Conclusions: The main objective of the conducted study was to define the factors determining the functionality of the AFTO 781 series record documentation, in the process of maintaining a certain level of safety in the operation of F-16 aircraft. In addition, the analysis of the results of the study allowed the author to interpret the ability of technical personnel to use the functionality of the AFTO 781 series record documentation in question, as well as to define the following conclusions and proposals for action, in order to minimize the occurrence of potential risks in the operation of aircraft equipment in the future

Cooling rates of neutron stars and the young neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant

    No full text
We explore the thermal state of the neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using the recent result of Ho & Heinke that the thermal radiation of this star is well described by a carbon atmosphere model and the emission comes from the entire stellar surface. Starting from neutron star cooling theory, we formulate a robust method to extract neutrino cooling rates of thermally relaxed stars at the neutrino cooling stage from observations of thermal surface radiation. We show how to compare these rates with the rates of standard candles – stars with non-superfluid nucleon cores cooling slowly via the modified Urca process. We find that the internal temperature of standard candles is a well-defined function of the stellar compactness parameter x=rg/R, irrespective of the equation of state of neutron star matter (R and rg are circumferential and gravitational radii, respectively). We demonstrate that the data on the Cassiopeia A neutron star can be explained in terms of three parameters: f?, the neutrino cooling efficiency with respect to the standard candle; the compactness x; and the amount of light elements in the heat-blanketing envelope. For an ordinary (iron) heat-blanketing envelope or a low-mass (? 10?13 M?) carbon envelope, we find the efficiency f?? 1 (standard cooling) for x? 0.5 and f?? 0.02 (slower cooling) for a maximum compactness x? 0.7. A heat blanket containing the maximum mass (?10?8 M?) of light elements increases f? by a factor of 50. We also examine the (unlikely) possibility that the star is still thermally non-relaxe

Regional disparities in the European Union: Convergence and agglomeration

    No full text
Economic disparities between the regions of the European Union are of constant concern both for policy and economic research. In this paper, we examine whether there are overlapping trends of regional development in the EU: overall convergence, on the one hand, and persistent or even increasing spatial concentration (agglomeration), on the other. Kernel density estimation, Markov chain analysis and cross-sectional regressions provide evidence that convergence of regional per-capita income in the EU15 has become considerably stronger in the 1990s. The reduction of income disparities, however, is a phenomenon between nations but not between regions within the EU countries. European integration (and possibly European regional policy) fosters the catching-up of lagging countries but at the same time forces towards agglomeration of economic activities tend to increase disparities within the EU member states. The planning programme agreement called "Contrat de Plan interrégional du Bassin Parisien" is coming to the end of its period (1994-1998). The author has been in charge for this contract, and gives a balance-sheet for the period as well as an overlook for the perspectives for the future.Le Contrat de Plan Interrégional du Bassin Parisien est proche de son échéance. A time-variable, phase-dependent emission line in the X-ray spectrum of the isolated neutron star RXJ0822–4300

    No full text
RX J0822−4300 is the central compact object associated with the Puppis A supernova remnant. Previous X-ray observations suggested RX J0822−4300 to be a young neutron star with a weak dipole field and a peculiar surface temperature distribution dominated by two antipodal spots with different temperatures and sizes. An emission line at 0.8 keV was also detected. We performed a very deep (130-ks) observation with XMM–Newton, which allowed us to study in detail the phase-resolved properties of RX J0822−4300. Our new data confirm the existence of a narrow spectral feature, best modelled as an emission line, only seen in the ‘soft’-phase interval – when the cooler region is best aligned to the line of sight. Surprisingly, comparison of our recent observations to the older ones yields evidence for a variation in the emission-line component, which can be modelled as a decrease in the central energy from ∼0.80 keV in 2001 to ∼0.73 keV in 2009–10. The line could be generated via cyclotron scattering of thermal photons in an optically-thin layer of gas, or, alternatively, it could originate in low-rate accretion by a debris disc. In any case, a variation in energy, pointing to a variation of the magnetic field in the line-emitting region, cannot be easily accounted for
