The Egyptian religious scholar, 'Abd al-Basit, presented this paper during the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) in Kuwait during the period 15-17 January 1985 on the beginning and the end of human life. The main thesis of this paper is that brain death is not a reliable death criterion from an Islamic perspective. Basing his argument on the opinions of early Muslim religious scholars, the author opines that man cannot be declared dead as long as one of the vital organs, such as the heart, is still functioning. Thus, no organs can be harvested from such a person because he is still living according to the Muslim religious scholars

Dynamic composition and management of emergency response processes

The number of disasters, whether human-made or natural, has been on the rise over in the recent years; they have destroyed lives, homes, and caused widespread damage to infrastructure. The increase in disasters means there is also a higher demand for efficient response planning. Effective emergency response planning requires communication and coordination with the diverse operational systems belonging to various collaborating government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), and private sector entities. An essential requirement for developing an emergency response process is to establish information sharing and system-level interoperability among the operational systems of collaborating organizations. The challenge is that emergency response processes are not well-structured and do not have a well-defined outcome; they are knowledge-centric. Their workflow structure and execution may evolve dynamically based on the environmental context and the type of service or activity invoked during process execution. It is impractical to define static plans and response process workflows for every possible situation since unforeseeable situations may arise. Thus, a dynamic response requires adaptability to a changing situation as an incident evolves. In this thesis, we develop an iterative end-to-end solution for the dynamic composition and management of an Emergency Response Management System, called Dynamic Emergency Response Processes System (DERPS). DERPS allows the Incident Commander to develop a contextualized response using ontology-based reasoning and allows its dynamic adaptation to situational changes. We also adapt and apply DERPS in the COVID-19 context. Specifically, given the pandemic’s scale and scope, home-based isolation has been considered a potential first step to reduce the spread of the virus and limit the stress on the healthcare system. However, home-based isolation needs and requirements are unique for each patient. We show how DERPS can be utilized to develop personalized patient care plans to ensure that each patient’s needs are appropriately met while they are confined to their home. We develop a prototype implementation to show the feasibility of the proposed framework and discuss challenges and issues in deploying such a system in practice.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

Spiritual leadership model is studied by the author in STAIN Purwokerto, as Islamic educational institutions which incidentally has been practicing spiritual values in their environment. The study was conducted using qualitative research and case study approach. Spiritual leadership in STAIN Purwokerto is constructed based on three important things: First, the existence of spiritual values that were held by leaders and serve as an ideology or belief to motivate himself and others. Spiritual values are values such are togetherness, belief or determination, and obeying the rules. Second, building tradition of spiritual leadership that is reflected in the actions taken by leaders in achieving the vision to be achieved by STAIN Purwokerto. The habitual process is done by sticking to spiritual values carried. Then it is implemented by issuing flagship programs supported by strategic policies carried out intensively so that it becomes a regular agenda of the academic community and staff as well as to produce a healthy organizational culture and quality. Third, organizational culture is fostered by building a dynamic atmosphere, full of family-like-feeling, cooperation, open and respectful in terms of spiritual, intellectual and professional. Lack of cohesiveness among workers in implementing the implementation of occupational health and safety in a company in order to avoid work accidents, and others

Manual or electronic? The role of coding in qualitative data analysis

    No full text
Data analysis is the most difficult and most crucial aspect of qualitative research. Coding is one of the significant steps taken during analysis to organize and make sense of textual data. This paper examines the use of manual and electronic methods to code data in two rather different projects in which the data were collected mainly by in-depth interviewing. The author looks at both the methods in the light of her own experience and concludes that the choice will be dependent on the size of the project, the funds and time available, and the inclination and expertise of the researcher

    Multicultural Counseling in Islamic Perspective

    No full text
In this globalization and information era, the role of multicultural counseling is very urgent for the community. Given the cultural exchange between one country and another country is so massive. If a counselor only focuses on the client's person without regard to the cultural factors influence it, then the process of implementing counseling can cause bias and ineffective. In its historical development, the theory and practice of multicultural counseling is still dominated by multicultural counseling originating from the West. Meanwhile, Indonesia is a country where the majority of the population is Muslim and in terms of culture differs from rational, individualist, and materialist of Western cultures. Therefore, this paper describes multicultural counseling in an Islamic perspective as an alternative to the development of multicultural counseling in Indonesia. The different human concepts, cultures, and values developed by Islam form the basic foundation in the multicultural counseling process. From this basic difference, the author further explains the competence and practice of multicultural counseling in Islam, especially in Indonesia. In obtaining the comprehensive data, the authors conducted a qualitative study by taking data sources derived from the al-Qur'an, al-Hadith, and the results of the thinking of Muslim scientists related to multicultural counseling

    No full text
Purpose: The increasing importance of knowledge sharing, almost all successful firms deem knowledge sharing and knowledge management as one of the central and strategically most important organizational concerns and allocate huge budgets to the effective management and transfer of knowledge. However, despite some very thoughtful measures taken by organizations, most of the firms fail to reap the fruits of knowledge sharing due to being ignorant regarding the individual, organizational and contextual factors that facilitate or impede the process of organizational knowledge sharing. Design/Methodology/Approach: This research is based on the PhD research dissertation of the author and it was conducted through qualitative content analysis of research articles on the subject matter. Findings: In this paper, in the light of the existing literature and available empirical evidence, a conceptual framework of individual antecedents (determinants) of knowledge sharing is presented. Based on the findings of this research, interpersonal trust, intension to share, self-efficacy, feeling of self-worth, organizational commitment, reciprocity, a passion to help others are the most important individual antecedents to knowledge sharing.  Implications/Originality/Value: This research offers some key thoughts and implication for the managers and practitioners, to know the individual factors that facilitate the process of KS within organizations. The author has also suggested some valuable recommendations at the end, for the effective management of knowledge sharing in organizations. The paper also provides a meaningful and productive ground for conducting qualitative or quantitative research but can also help researchers in the designing of instruments for conducting research on the topic of individual antecedents to knowledge sharing (KS)
