Oral History Interview with L. E. Robinson
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral monologue by L E Robinson. As a member of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Robinson recounts that many Raiders suffered broken limbs while practicing landings in the rough sea amidst coral reef. He details the makeup of the battalion and the key strategies that led to its many successes, beginning with a raid on Makin Atoll. After the landing on Guadalcanal, he was transferred to the 4th Marine Division as chief of the intelligence section. In Saipan, Jumping Joe Chambers brought Evans F. Carlson to work beside Robinson as an observer. Together they led the fifth and final assault on Hill 500, with Carlson selflessly giving aid to a wounded radioman while under fire. At Tinian, Robinson’s scouts reported that a 2,500-man banzai attack was imminent. Chambers, having stockpiled over 60 machine guns, placed every man, from clerks to cooks, behind a trigger. Afterward, Robinson observed families jumping off of cliffs as Marines wept in despair, only to see it happen again on Tinian. When Robinson returned to the States, he was diagnosed with toxic fever blood poisoning and lymph gland poisoning, weighing only 108 pounds at six-and-a-half feet tall. He was declared unfit for combat and became an instructor in the Troop Leaders Training College. After discharge, Robinson attended school on the GI Bill and enjoyed a career as a research scientist

Competing models of socially constructed economic man : differentiating Defoe's Crusoe from the Robinson of neoclassical economics
Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe has seldom been read as an explicitly political text. When it has, it appears that the central character was designed to warn the early eighteenth-century reader against political challenges to the existing economic order. Insofar as Defoe’s Crusoe stands for "economic man", he is a reflection of historically-produced assumptions about the need for social conformity, not the embodiment of any genuinely essential economic characteristics. This insight is used to compare Defoe’s conception of economic man with that of the neoclassical Robinson Crusoe economy. On the most important of the ostensibly generic principles espoused by neoclassical theorists, their "Robinson" has no parallels with Defoe’s Crusoe. Despite the shared name, two quite distinct social constructions serve two equally distinct pedagogical purposes. Defoe’s Crusoe extols the virtues of passive middle-class sobriety for effective social organisation; the neoclassical Robinson champions the establishment of markets for the sake of productive efficiency
