Read Part One here. In this installment, General Zinni shares his experiences with wargames, Desert Crossing and Millennium Challenge 2002 in particular, and discusses how the differing objectives of service chiefs and combatant commanders manifest in wargames. Gen Zinni then touches on the U.S. military’s overreliance on technology and draws parallels from the business world to inform approaches to great power competition

Complete and regioselective deacetylation of peracetylated uridines using a lipase

Lipase-catalysed alcoholysis and hydrolysis of 2',3',5-tri-O- acetyluridine (1a) and 2',3',5'-tri-O-acetyl-2'-C-methyluridine (1b) were studied. Conditions for full and regioselective deacetylation of 1a and 1b are shown in the present work. New compound 2',3'-di-O-acetyl-2'-C- methyluridine (3b) was prepared by regioselective lipase-catalysed deacetylation.Fil: Iglesias, Luis Emilio.

Postembryonic development in pseudoscorpions: allometry in Geogarypus italicus (Pseudoscorpiones: Geogarypidae)

Pseudoscorpions are arachnids featuring three nymphal instars before reaching the adult age. Instars can be mostly recognized based on the number of trichobothria which lie along the chelal axis: as the individual grows, further trichobothria are added. The study of the post-embryonic growth based on trichobothria position has been the most widely used approach. However, other body parts can be subjected to particular growth patterns that need to be explored to fully understand post-embryonic development processes. Rigorous numerical approaches that allow meaningful statistical inference within growth regressions are now available. The recently described Mediterranean species Geogarypus italicus Gardini, Galli & Zinni, 2017 gave the authors the chance to review studies carried out in the past with the modern statistical approach mentioned above. Results confirm the main hypothesis about the growth process of the chelal axis but showed some differences that may be related to taxonomical aspects. Moreover, the study of body allometry during postembryonic growth showed that not all body parts undergo the same trend from protonymphs to males, on one side, and to females, on the other. Finally, the study of proportions between body parts through the analysis of ratios between their linear measurements pointed out a marked sexual dimorphism of pedipalps in spite of similar sizes and proportions of other body regions. The analysis led us to think that more interesting information could come from applying this approach to multispecies studies

Aspidosiphon (Akrikos) cf. zinni Cutler Aspidosiphon zinni Cutler, 1969: 209 –211. Type locality: East Coast of the U.S., 39.43 ° N, 70.6 ° W, 2496 m. Remarks: The two 5 mm transparent thin worms have continuous longitudinal musculature and a pale, ungrooved anal shield made up of fine uniform granular units. The introvert is shorter than the trunk and has scattered, small, pale hooks and no observable tentacles. Distribution: Common in the northern Atlantic Ocean at depths of 1100–4400 m, plus two records from around 9 ° S off the Congo River. In the Indian Ocean there is one report from the Mozambique Channel and one from the Reunion Islands. The worms frequently live in arenaceous foraminiferan tests. The present specimens are thousands of kilometres from any previously known populations of A. zinni. Since they are very small deepwater animals it is conceivable that the species has been overlooked by previous collectors Before accepting the present material as unequivocally this species, we prefer to have additional specimens for confirmation.Published as part of Cutler, Edward B., Schulze, Anja & Dean, Harlan K., 2004, Zealand species, pp. 1-19 in Zootaxa 525 on page 15, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15800
