Mapping the spatial variation of soil moisture at the large scale using GPR for pavement applications
The characterization of shallow soil moisture spatial variability at the large scale is a crucial issue in many research studies and fields of application ranging from agriculture and geology to civil and environmental engineering. In this framework, this work contributes to the research in the area of pavement engineering for preventing damages and planning effective management. High spatial variations of subsurface water content can lead to unexpected damage of the load-bearing layers; accordingly, both safety and operability of roads become lower, thereby affecting an increase in expected accidents. \ud
A pulsed ground-penetrating radar system with ground-coupled antennas, i.e., 600-MHz and 1600-MHz center frequencies of investigation, was used to collect data in a 16 m × 16 m study site in the Po Valley area in northern Italy. Two ground-penetrating radar techniques were employed to non-destructively retrieve the subsurface moisture spatial profile. The first technique is based on the evalu¬ation of the dielectric permittivity from the attenuation of signal amplitudes. Therefore, dielectrics were converted into moisture values using soil-specific coefficients from Topp’s relationship. Ground-penetrating-radar-derived values of soil moisture were then compared with measurements from eight capacitance probes. The second technique is based on the Rayleigh scattering of the signal from the Fresnel theory, wherein the shifts of the peaks of frequency spectra are assumed comprehensive indi¬cators for characterizing the spatial variability of moisture. Both ground-penetrating radar methods have shown great promise for mapping the spatial variability of soil moisture at the large scale

Tosti e Fogazzaro
The essay by Carlo Cattaneo "On the further development of public education", composed by order of the government of Vienna in the first months of 1848, on the eve of the riot of the "Cinque giornate", constitutes an interesting document, which allows to know the orientations of the Lombard statesman in the field of public education, and at the same time provides a very precise and complete picture of the state of public education in Lombardy-Veneto, twenty years after the entry into force of the "Regolamento Generale" of 1818. Some observations on the link between enlargement and diffusion of technical and commercial education and economic and political development in Lombardy are of great interest, and on the character and characteristics of the emerging Lombard entrepreneurial bourgeoisie, as reasons of resistance to the transformation of the school system

Design of a multi-tube Pd-membrane module for tritium recovery from He in DEMO
Dense self-supported Pd-alloy membranes are used to selectively separate hydrogen and hydrogen isotopes. In particular, deuterium (D) and tritium (T) are currently identified as the main elements for the sustainability of the nuclear fusion reaction aimed at carbon free power generation. In the fusion nuclear reactors, a breeding blanket produces the tritium that is extracted and purified before being sent to the plasma chamber in order to sustain the fusion reaction. In this work, the application of Pd-alloy membranes has been tested for recovering tritium from a solid breeding blanket through a helium purge stream. Several simulations have been performed in order to optimize the design of a Pd-Ag multi-tube module in terms of geometry, operating parameters, and membrane module configuration (series vs. parallel). The results demonstrate that a pre-concentration stage before the Pd-membrane unit is mandatory because of the very low tritium concentration in the He which leaves the breeding blanket of the fusion reactor. The most suitable operating conditions could be reached by: (i) increasing the hydrogen partial pressure in the lumen side and (ii) decreasing the shell pressure. The preliminary design of a membrane unit has been carried out for the case of the DEMO fusion reactor: the optimized membrane module consists of an array of 182 Pd-Ag tubes of 500 mm length, 10 mm diameter, and 0.100 mm wall thickness (total active area of 2.85 m2). © 2016 by the authors
Isotope effects H/D in a PEFC with Pt–Ru/anode at low and high current density
This paper reports a study on the use of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) with a Pt–Ru/C anode for isotopic separation of hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D). The performance of a PEFC, fed with pure hydrogen, deuterium or a their mix is depicted. In order to investigate the effect of the two isotopes, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests have been carried out together with galvanostatic polarization and IR analysis. Results evidenced an isotope effect on the thermodynamics, conductivity, ionic mobility and cathode mass transfer. IR analysis at the cathode side indicated that the isotopic separation efficiency was dependent on the current density with a maximum at intermediate values
