Bone Response to Two Dental Implants with Different Sandblasted/Acid-Etched Implant Surfaces: A Histological and Histomorphometrical Study in Rabbits

    No full text
Background. Scientific evidence in the field of implant dentistry of the past 20 years established that titanium rough surfaces have shown improved osseointegration rates. In a majority of dental implants, the surface microroughness was obtained by grit blasting and/or acid etching. The aim of the study was to evaluatein vivotwo different highly hydrophilic surfaces at different experimental times.Methods. Calcium-modified (CA) and SLActive surfaces were evaluated and a total of 18 implants for each type of surface were positioned into the rabbit articular femoral knee-joint in a split model experiment, and they were evaluated histologically and histomorphometrically at 15, 30, and 60 days of healing.Results. Bone-implant contact (BIC) at the two-implant surfaces was significantly different in favor of the CA surface at 15 days(p=0.027), while SLActive displayed not significantly higher values at 30(p=0.51)and 60 days(p=0.061).Conclusion. Both implant surfaces show an intimate interaction with newly formed bone.</jats:p

Corporate Savings and the 2007-2009 Financial Crisis: A Warning for the European Banking Union

    No full text
The final step of the European banking union process should be the single deposit guarantee mechanism (SDM) able to allow for bail-in of the banks while the saving system is rescued. If the effectiveness of bank deposit insurance depends on the nature of the financial crisis and the corporate saving glut does in fact play an important role in such crises, then it could be worth looking into the structural, cyclical or transitory nature of the latter. This paper constitutes a preliminary reconnaissance of the phenomenon, seeking to understand its relevance in defining the nature of a financial crisis

During the final years of World War I the Vatican diplomacy was actively engaged in mediating among the belligerent nations and in particular between Austria and Italy in order to reach a peace agreement and to participate to the Peace Conference. Its action, however, was made difficult by the persistence of the “Roman Question” with the Italian government and by the lack of direct official relations with most of the Entente powers which considered the Vatican more favorable to the central powers. Despite its proximity to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Vatican's desire to avoid its dissolution, the Holy See was neutral and endeavored, with some success, to intensify relations with Italy, despite the mistrust of Foreign Minister Sidney Sonnino and it tried in vain to persuade Austria-Hungary to accept part of the Italian territorial requests

In Silico identification and annotation of noncoding RNAs by RNA-seq and de Novo assembly of the transcriptome of Tomato Fruits

The complexity of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) transcriptome has not yet been fully elucidated. To gain insights into the diversity and features of coding and non-coding RNA molecules of tomato fruits, we generated strand-specific libraries from berries of two tomato cultivars grown in two open-field conditions with different soil type. Following high-throughput Illumina RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), more than 90% of the reads (over one billion, derived from twelve dataset) were aligned to the tomato reference genome. We report a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome, improved with 39,095 transcripts, which reveals previously unannotated novel transcripts, natural antisense transcripts, long noncoding RNAs and alternative splicing variants. In addition, we investigated the sequence variants between the cultivars under investigation to highlight their genetic difference. Our strand-specific analysis allowed us to expand the current tomato transcriptome annotation and it is the first to reveal the complexity of the poly-adenylated RNA world in tomato. Moreover, our work demonstrates the usefulness of strand specific RNA-seq approach for the transcriptome-based genome annotation and provides a resource valuable for further functional studies. © 2017 Scarano et al. Acute motor neuropathy after intrathecal treatment with methotrexate: A case report

    No full text
Intrathecal therapy with methotrexate and cytosine-arabinoside is a therapeutic strategy for maintaining remission in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, that is associated with neurological side effects are described. We report a 4-year-old girl who became tetraplegic after the last dose of intrathecal therapy. Cerebrospinal fluid showed elevated protein level and nerve conduction study revealed a motor neuronopathy. Spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed gadolinium enhancement of the anterior roots of the cauda equina. We describe a myelopathy confined to the anterior horns and anterior spinal nerve roots without sensory involvement caused by intrathecal methotrexate. The pathogenesis of this selective involvement remains uncertain. © 2007 IOS Press. All rights reserved
