    Ecophysiology of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule L.) in Southampton Water with particular reference to pollution

    Ecophysiological studies encompassing many aspects of population ecology and individual physiological functions on Cerastoderma edule have been carried out. Sites for study were carefully selected so as to include both areas in the proximity of a pollution source (i.e. Fawley, Tucker Pile, Bird Pile and Marchwood) and regions distant from overt polluting input (Dibden Bay, Netley and Woolston). In the sheltered central parts of the estuary longevity, abundance, growth rates and productivity were higher. In contrast most localities on the western side of the estuary showed reduced growth, abundance, longevity and productivity. The variation observed in the population parameters was attributed to pollution load (heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons) and other sediment properties (grain size and organic matter content) of sites. The results of seasonal, age and site to site variation in the concentrations of six heavy metals (copper, cadmium, lead, iron, nickel and zinc) in C.edule tissues and sediment indicate that the populations inhabiting areas in the proximity of the industrial complex are more contaminated than those outside the areas. The same trend was found for the total petroleum hydrocarbons of cockles and sediment; being highest at Fawley and Tucker Pile. Statistical analysis of data supported the idea that the variability in the concentrations of copper, zinc, petroleum hydrocarbons and sediment grain size bring about the differences observed in the population parameters. Based on the levels of these variables, four site groups were identified. The physiological impact of pollution on C.edule was studied in greater detail. The effect of the water-accommodated fraction of Fawley oil and copper concentrations was marked on the clearance rate and absorption efficiency. Cockles exposed to higher concentrations showed negative scope for growth after the second week of exposure. A highly significant inverse correlation was found between either the concentration of WAF or Cu and the scope for growth. The physiological conditions of C.edule in the field were also investigated. The measurements were carried out on the populations of cockles at Fawley (a polluted site) and Dibden Bay (a relatively uncontaminated site). The energy available for the growth of cockles inhabiting Dibden Bay was found to be ten times greater than that available to Fawley cockles. The body condition index measured for the cockles along Southampton Water throughout the year showed similar variance as that displayed for scope for growth. Finally, the results of the present study were discussed in relation to event in the natural habitat of cockles in Southampton Water.</p

    Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli tarkastella mallipohjaisesta suunnittelusta saatavia hyötyjä Ylivieskan Savari 3 -alueen suunnitteluhanketta hyväksi käyttäen. Työ toteutettiin elokuun 2016 ja tammikuun 2017 välisenä aikana, ja sen tuloksena päivitettiin Destia Oy:n sisäisessä käytössä ollut ”Suunnitelmasta toteutusmalliksi”-ohje. Lisäksi Savari 3 -hankkeelle laadittiin toteutusmalliaineisto työkoneautomaation käyttöön ja tarkasteltiin toteutusmallien laatuun vaikuttavia tekijöitä sekä malliaineistolle asetettuja odotuksia elo– syyskuussa 2016 toteutetun kyselyn avulla. Savari 3 -alueen suunnitteluhankkeella hyödynnettiin Tekla Civil -suunnitteluohjelmaa, minkä lisäksi toteutusmallien viimeistelyssä ja laadunvarmistuksessa käytettiin 3d-Win -ohjelmaa sekä LandNova -simulaattoria. Suunnitelmapiirustusten viimeistelyssä hyödynnettiin AutoCAD -suunnitteluohjelmistoa. Suunnittelutyössä kohde mallinnettiin tarvittavassa laajuudessa myös alueelle aiemmin laadittujen suunnitelmien osalta yhteensopivuuden varmistamiseksi. Väylien rakennekerrokset mallinnettiin mahdollisimman tarkasti Tekla Civil -ohjelmaan, ja uudelleen nimetty ”Toteutusmallin laatiminen suunnitelmamallista” - ohje päivitettiin toteutusmallien viimeistelyn yhteydessä. Opinnäytetyön yhteydessä toteutetun, konekuskeille ja toteutusmalliaineistoa käsitteleville operaattoreille kohdennetun, kyselyn avulla kartoitettiin toteutusmalleissa tähän mennessä havaitut suurimmat puutteet, ja näihin epäkohtiin pyrittiin puuttumaan Savari 3 –alueen toteutusmalleja luotaessa. Työn tuloksena saatiin Savari 3 -alueelle luotua perinteiset suunnitelmapiirustukset sekä -asiakirjat, minkä lisäksi kohteen rakentamista tukeva toteutusmalliaineisto luovutettiin tilaajalle tammikuussa 2017. Destia Oy:n sisäisessä käytössä ollut toteutusmallien luomista käsittelevä ohje päivitettiin ja toteutusmallien laadunvarmistukseen käytössä olevia menetelmiä ja työkaluja tarkasteltiin organisaation yksiköissä osana laajempia kehittämishankkeita.This thesis discussed the utilization of model- based planning, creating of machine control models and their quality assurance. Savari 3 area planning project was used as a practical example. The purpose was also to update the instructions for “Creating a machine control model” used by Destia Oy. The planning project was executed by using the Tekla Civil planning software,as well as 3d Win and AutoCAD applications. Planning was done by following the common InfraBIM Requirements YIV 2015 and the common guidelines of infrastructure construction. The project covered the construction planning of four different streets, located in Ylivieska in Northern Ostrobothnia. In addition to structural planning the project also covered the planning of water supply lines and trenches. During the planning process the benefits of model- based planning were constantly taken into account and they were also discussed as their own subject in this thesis. The main result of this project was that not only the traditional construction planning documents for Savari 3 area were made, but also the machine control models for the excavators and surveyors to use during the construction process. The “Creating a machine control model” instructions were updated. The instructions were updated alongside the planning process and the finished product will be used in Destia Ltd. as the model- based production of construction planning is increasingly growing.     Heavy metals' concentration in sediment, shrimp and two fish species from the northwest Persian Gulf

    The concentrations of heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn)) were measured in hepatopancreas and muscle of a commercial shrimp (Metapenaeus affinis), in the muscle, liver and gills of two fish species (Thryssa vitrirostris and Johnius belangerii) and in the sediment samples taken from the mouth of the Arvand river, Meleh estuary and Musa estuary in the northeast Persian Gulf. Concentration of heavy metals varied depending on different tissues, species and sampling sites. Liver of fish and hepatopancreas of shrimp exhibited higher metals' concentration than the other tissues. Generally, in the mouth of the Arvand river, the highest concentration of metals was found in benthic species; while in the mouth of Musa estuary, the highest level of the metals was found in pelagic fish species. Bioaccumulation factors were observed to follow the order: J. belangerii-liver-Cd > T. vitrirostris-liver-Pb > M.affinis-hepatopancreas-Zn >M.affinis-hepatopancreas-Cu >M.affinis- hepatopancreas-Ni. The analysed heavy metals were found in sediment samples at mean concentration in the sediment quality guideline proposed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Regional Organization for the Protection of The Marine Environment (ROPME), except for Ni concentration in some cases

    Solar flux atlases The new HARPS-N quiet Sun benchmark and continuum normalisation of the Ca II H & Klines

    Context. Solar flux atlases observe the spatially integrated light from the Sun, treating it as a star. They are fundamental tools for gaining insight into the composition of the Sun and other stars. They are utilised as reference material for a wide range of solar applications such as stellar chemical abundances, atmospheric physics, stellar activity, and radial velocity signals. Aims. We provide a detailed comparison of solar activity reported in some of the well-known solar atlases against the new High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher for the Northern hemisphere (HARPS-N) Quiet Sun (QS) and Measured Activity (MA) atlases published, for the first time, in this work. Methods. Ten of the widely used individual spectral lines from each flux atlas were selected to compare solar activity based on three methods: (1) equivalent widths; (2) a novel activity measure introduced in this work and referred to as the activity number; and (3) bisectors and radial velocity. Results. The significantly smaller activity levels measured in the MA atlas, compared to the other atlases, relative to the QS atlas, underscores the dominance of instrumental effects over solar activity in their impact on spectral lines, which cannot be corrected through simple line convolution to match resolutions of other atlases. Additionally, our investigation unexpectedly revealed a substantial intensity shift in the CaiiH&K lines of other atlases compared to our HARPS-N atlases, likely resulting from the assumptions made when applying normalisation techniques for the early Kitt Peak atlases. Conclusions. With an average spot number of zero, our QS atlas is well suited to serve as an absolute benchmark atlas representative of solar minimum for the visible spectrum, which other atlases can be compared against. Our recommendations going forward include: (1) the publication of a detailed log along with the observations to include exact dates and indications of solar activity; and (2) given the dominance of instrumental effects over variations caused by activity, quiet Sun reference atlases must be constructed with the same instruments to ensure high precision

    Storage Systems for Non-volatile Memory Devices

    This dissertation presents novel approaches to the use of non-volatile memory devices in building storage systems. There are many types of non-volatile memory devices, and they usually have better performance than regular magnetic hard disks in terms of throughput and latency. This dissertation focused on two of them, NAND flash memory and Phase Change Memory (PCM). This work consisted of two parts. The first part was to design a high-performance hybrid storage system employing Solid State Drives that are build out of NAND flash memory and Hard Disk Drives. In this hybrid system, we proposed two different policies to improve its performance. One is to exploit the fact that the performances of Solid State Drive and Hard Disk Drive are asymmetric and the other is to exploit concurrency on multiple devices. We implemented prototypes in Linux and evaluate both policies in multiple workloads and multiple configurations. The results showed that the proposed approaches improve the performance significantly, and adapt to different configurations of the system under different workloads. The second part was to implement a file system on a special class of memory devices, Storage Class Memory (SCM), which is both byte addressable and also nonvolatile, e.g. PCM. We claimed that both the existing regular file systems and the memory based file systems are not suitable for SCM, and proposed a new file system, called SCMFS, which is implemented on the virtual address space. In SCMFS, we utilized the existing memory management module in the operating system to do the block management. Our design keeps address space within a file contiguous to reduce the block management software. The simplicity of SCMFS not only makes it easy to implement, but also improves the performance. We implemented a prototype of SCMFS in Linux and evaluated its performance through multiple benchmarks
