“Frockcoats Walking in Line”: Noguchi Yonejirō’s Perception of Edwardian London

    No full text
This article is devoted to the construction of the image of London and Londoners in the early 20th century in the works of a Japanese writer and poet Noguchi Yonejirō (1875–1947) on his first trip to Britain in late 1902. The study utilizes the writer’s autobiography in English and the collection 13 Years of Britain and the United States in Bungo with extracts from his diary entries. The author examines the key characteristics of the city and its inhabitants in Edwardian times, according to Noguchi Yonejirō. It was discovered that the images of London of this period had a common origin – a “pre-image” of an idealized city which formed on the basis of memoirs of 1860–1870s Japanese travelers. As a result, two contrasting images of London can be seen in Noguchi Yonejirōʼs writings. The first image of London is characterized by the predominance of negative characteristics in the texts of the Japanese writer. The reasons for this were that, in addition to the “pre-image,” Noguchi had been influenced by an earlier trip to the United States of America in 1893–1902 and the subsequent comparison of the British Empire’s capital with the American cities where the writer had previously lived. Later, the gloominess of city was replaced by a romanticized view of it as a graceful lady. The author suggests two reasons for the abrupt transformation of the image of London: the successful publication of the poem collection From the Eastern Sea, which was the purpose of Noguchi’s trip, and the writer’s gradual adaptation to the city, his acquiring ties with the locals, imitating Londoners and copying the habits, traditions, and foundations of the early 20th century British society

The author of the article considers the personality of the British traveler Isabella Bird in the context of the phenomenon of Victorian women travelers. The basis of the source base was A. Stoddart’s biographical notes and journalism materials. The author comes to the conclusion that Isabella Byrd is the best proof of the trend towards an increase in the number of female travelers of British origin in the second half of the 19th century, despite the persistence of prejudices against women in Victorian society. Moreover, the publication of I. Bird’s travel notes made it possible to open for English readers such distant countries as Japan and China, as well as the territories of America and Australia

The article was submitted on 13.05.2023. XIX в. The article focuses on the problems of British woman perception in Japanese Meiji travellers` works, in particular, in the works of Japanese writer Noguchi Yonejiro. It was stated that relation development between Japan and Great Britain at that time had caused Japanese national`s trips to the British Isles in order to learn about advanced British experience in economic sphere or accomplish university training. 1850–1870s travellers, such as students, politicians, historians, left their impressions in the form of notes and diaries which touched upon, aside from other aspects, gender issues, for instance, British women social position and men attitude towards them. Their remarks had become the basis – “pre-image” – for future travellers` notes. Later on, the signing of “The Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation” in 1894 and relation transformation on equal principles between sides by the early 20th century made travels accessible to ordinary Japanese nationals. During that time not only students, but also the English language teachers and writers went to Great Britain. To exemplify, writer Noguchi Yonejiro (1875–1947) came to the British Isles in November 1902 to publish anthology “From the Eastern Sea” in English. Based on the sources of Noguchi`s stay in London, like autobiography and “13 Years of Great Britain and America” compilation, authors of this article try to construct a British woman image during writer`s first trip. Apart from abovementioned “pre-image”, Noguchi Yonejiro`s perception was based on his nine-year-stay in America from 1893 to 1902 and faceto-face communication with British women in London. Noguchi described their social position, style and manners. Nevertheless, writer`s remarks slightly differed from British perceptions of that time and were stereotypical in fact

The widespread violation of scientifically based crop rotation and their saturation with sunflower caused an accelerated emergence of more aggressive races of broomrape and powdery mildew. Currently, the researchers from different countries have identified 8 races of broomrape A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. The sunflower varieties and hybrids previously developed at the station and introduced into the State List of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation that are resistant to the broomrape races A, B, C, D, E were greatly affected. Monitoring of the races of broomrape and false powdery mildew, conducted by the ARRIOC researchers, showed the presence of more aggressive broomrape races (F, G, H) and false powdery mildew (330, 710, 730) in the fields of the Rostov Region. The current situation necessitated the development of sunflower hybrids resistant to the new aggressive races of these pathogens. To identify such hybrids, the corresponding initial breeding material has been required. It was important to combine resistance to broomrape and false powdery mildew with other breeding-valuable traits in one genotype. The current paper presents the results of the sunflower initial breeding material on resistance to broomrape and false powdery mildew. The work was carried out in the fields and in the laboratories of DOS, an affiliate of the FSBSI FSC ARRIOC. The breeding material developed at the station was used as the initial material. Using hybridization methods, multiple self-pollination, and reliable estimation of pathogen resistance at all stages of the breeding process, there was selected a promising linear material (I-4/4640, I-4/4764, I-5/2450, I-5/2465 and etc.), which was included into the search for high heterosis hybrid combinations. The hybrid combinations developed with its participation (MLG 45/4640, MLG 121/4764, MLG 65/2444, etc.), when estimated on the fields infected by sunflower broomrape, showed a higher resistance to highly virulent races of the pathogen in comparison with the best foreign hybrids

Closed-form models for photon strength functions for the description of photoabsorption cross section in the energy range 5 - 30 MeV for even-even nuclei are tested. The experimental database was prepared with systematic uncertainty less than 10% from the EXFOR data. The uncertainties are estimated using the calculations of the photo cross sections within TALYS 1.6 code. The theoretical models are compared with experimental photoabsorption cross section data. The minimum of the least-square deviation and the root-mean-square deviation factor are used as a criteria comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. It is shown that the simple modified Lorentzian model is the best approach for simulation of the photoabsorption cross section at the gamma-ray energies below ~ 30 MeV.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

DNA-markers of heterosis of sunflower hybrids of domestic breeding The article presents the results of the analysis of polymorphism conducted on micro satellite loci of core genome by 12 SSR-markers (Ha 432, Ha 514, Ha 1442, Ha 1608, Ha1287, IUB6, ORS6, ORS 509, IUB4, HNCA1, OSU-1, HNCA2). Seven genotypes of the hybrid F1 of sunflower (Donskoy 151 -♀ВД 151 х ♂ ВД 541; Partner - ♀ ЭД 1443 х ♂ВД 541; Donskoy 22 - ♀ВД 22 х ♂ВД 541; Garant - ♀ЭД 931 х ♂ВД 62; Prestizh - ♀ЭД 169 х ♂ВД 62; Signal - ♀ЭД 236 х ♂ВД 110; Donskoy 1448 - ♀ВД 1448 х ♂ВД 62) and their parental lines developed by the Donskaya Experimental Station named after L.A. Zhdanov have been analyzed. 36 allelic variants have been established. For each genotype there has been designed a separate allelic formula which can be used as its molecule-genetic passport. The studied marker system has a high discrimination potential for identifying sunflower selection samples. The heterosis of hybrid F1, genetic diversity of parental lines based on SSR-markers as well as genetic distances with combination ability of sunflower have been studied. Ten basic inbred lines (3 Rf lines and 7 CMS lines) and their hybrids have been studied according to such traits as height, plant productivity, 1000-kernels weight, oil content and hull content. The field trials were conducted during 6 seasons. Genetic distance among parental lines of sunflower ranged from 0.45 to 0.74. There has been found a reliable positive correlation of heterosis effect on the yield of seeds in hybrids (r=0.79,
