How to obtain a high TRL advancement of Research-Based inventions through Proof-of-Concept programs: a fuzzy-set QCA investigation
Proof-of-Concept programs (PoCs) are technology transfer policy instruments that have been proven effective in advancing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of Research-Based inventions (RBIs), thus enhancing their future commercialization possibilities. Nevertheless, there is a lack of understanding of which elements characterizing PoCs contribute to the advancement of the TRL of RBIs. These elements are derived from the literature and concern the activities undertaken by the participating teams, the interactions with potential customers and their geographical localization, and the type of technology to be developed during the program. To fill this gap, we employ a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) methodology on a sample of 98 RBIs participating in seven PoCs run within five major Italian universities between 2016 and 2021. Results show significant differences in PoC processes based on the typology of RBIs. To achieve a high TRL advancement a combination of the elements is required, like a high engagement in activities that aim to technically demonstrate and validate the RBI and the necessity of the interaction with potential customers located within a given distance. Our findings contribute to the PoCs literature and generate implications both for policymakers and decision-makers within universities and other public and private entities interested in PoCs design improvement and for Technology Transfer Offices in supporting PoCs teams in network creation

The role of stakeholders and product architecture on the effectiveness of Proof-of-Concept programs
Previous literature has recognized the importance of building new relationships with the external ecosystem to improve the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of Research Based Invention (RBIs). This is particularly important for those RBIs participating to Proof-of-Concept programs. However, previous literature has overlooked to provide information on which are the best characteristics of such stakeholders to foster the TRL advancement in a PoC context. This study aims to fill this gap by employing a quantitative analysis on a sample of 101 RBIs participating in seven PoC programs launched in Italy from 2016 to 2021.
Our results suggest that the effectiveness of PoCs is influenced by the stakeholder relationships created by the team during the program, and not by those existing prior to PoC. Moreover, to obtain an advancement of the TRL, relationships with stakeholders who possess certain characteristics (e.g. medium-sized stakeholders operating in different industries other than those initially known) are needed. However, such characteristics are highly idiosyncratic to the type of product architecture underlying the RBI. The study provides implications for both policy and decision-makers, within universities and other public and private entities, interested in PoCs design improvement
Balanced source terms for wave generation within the Hasselmann equation
The new Zakharov–Resio–Pushkarev (ZRP) wind input source term Zakharov et al.(2012) is examined for its
theoretical consistency via numerical simulation of the Hasselmann
equation. The results are compared to field experimental data,
collected at different sites around the world, and theoretical
predictions based on self-similarity analysis. Consistent results are
obtained for both limited fetch and duration limited statements
