Optimal randomized parallel algorithms for computational geometry

    No full text
We present parallel algorithms for some fundamental problems in computational geometry which have a running time ofO(logn) usingn processors, with very high probability (approaching 1 as n → ∞). These include planar-point location, triangulation, and trapezoidal decomposition. We also present optimal algorithms for three-dimensional maxima and two-set dominance counting by an application of integer sorting. Most of these algorithms run on a CREW PRAM model and have optimal processor-time product which improve on the previously best-known algorithms of Atallah and Goodrich [5] for these problems. The crux of these algorithms is a useful data structure which emulates the plane-sweeping paradigm used for sequential algorithms. We extend some of the techniques used by Reischuk [22] and Reif and Valiant [21] for flashsort algorithm to perform divide and conquer in a plane very efficiently leading to the improved performance by our approach

    Increasing the cigarette tax

    No full text
This report estimates the revenue and distributional effects of increasing the state’s cigarette excise tax by 0.50perpackfrom0.50 per pack from 1.98 to 2.48.Aftertakingintoaccountthebehavioralresponsesofsmokers,Reifestimatesthatthetaxincreasewouldraiseupto2.48. After taking into account the behavioral responses of smokers, Reif estimates that the tax increase would raise up to 175 million per year and reduce Medicaid expenditures by almost $1 million per year. The amount of revenue generated depends on the extent to which a tax rate increase would boost tax avoidance in large border cities like Chicago. Although cigarettes are predominantly consumed by the poor, many would significantly decrease their consumption in response to the tax, thereby mitigating some of their tax burden. Moreover, if smokers are not making rational, well-informed decisions, then economic theory predicts that an increase in the cigarette tax may benefit them by encouraging healthier behavior.Open Restriction set for Item 118048 on 2021-08-02T16:29:39Z with date null by [email protected] by Rebecca Blythe ([email protected]) on 2021-08-02T16:34:12Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Reif-Cigarette-Tax-web.pdf: 431337 bytes, checksum: dafda6c3a6310637b817e59ecbdb1b35 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-08-02T16:34:12Z (GMT). Effect of screw insertion torque on push-out and cantilever bending properties of five different angle-stable systems

    No full text
Objective: To compare the screw push-out strength and resistance to cantilever bending of 5 different angular stable systems using 4 different insertion torque values to tighten locking screws. Study Design: In vitro mechanical testing of 5 screw-plate constructs. Sample Population: Screw-plate constructs (n=60) were tested; 12 for each design, 3 for each torque value. Methods: To compare push-out strength, screws were loaded in axial direction on the screw tip until loosening of the locking mechanism was recorded. For cantilever bending test, screws were loaded perpendicularly to their longitudinal axis at 2 mm of distance from the under surface of the plate. Load was applied in displacement control at 1 mm/min. Results: There was a significant difference between the 5 different angular stable systems regarding both push-out and cantilever bending strength for 2 systems and insertion torque value. Conclusions: Locking mechanisms using "treads in treads" principle provide a stronger screw push-out behavior. Screws material and core diameter of the different screws were directly related to cantilever bending strength

Review of: Reif, H. (2012). Adel im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Reihe “Elitenwandel in der Moderne”. München: Oldenbourg. This review studies a fundamental work of H. Reif, a leading German researcher of the history of the German nobility between the 18th and early 20th centuries. The book presents a general analysis of the transformation of the social status, intra- and inter-class ties, property, professional trajectories, political influence, values of the nobility in the context of modernisation processes, and the change of elites in Germany. This work is the most well-founded in the current historiography in this research field. Reif reevaluates some established historiographical settings; first of all, the theses about the “economic death” of the German landed nobility – junkers, the thesis of the nobility’s exclusive responsibility for the inability to self-reform Kaiser Germany. Reif puts forward an original concept of “nobility” as a basic element of class consciousness and political culture.Рец. на кн. : Reif H. Adel im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Reihe „Elitenwandel in der Moderne“ / H. Reif. — München : Oldenbourg, 2012.
