Analysis of visual field damage in glaucomatous myopic eyes

    No full text
Purpose: An analysis was carried out on a computerized perimetry of a group of patients affected by open angle chronic glaucoma. The patients were studied for a minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 64 months. The following was analyzed: 1) The varying sensibility of the central 30° of visual field. 2) The statistical significance and its clinical interest related to different refractive conditions. Methods: 110 patients (208 eyes), with an average age of 56.7 years (±14.8) were tested at least three times, once every six months. The total sum of visual fields was 837. All the patients were divided into 4 subgroups relating to refraction. At the first visual field the disease had been in evidence for an average of 4.7 years (±3.7) and in all the patients the intraocular pressure under therapy remained stable for the whole period of the study (Av.16.9 mmHg±2.3). A central 30° visual field (OCTOPUS 2000 Prog.G1) was carried out at each control. The resulting data was analyzed by PERIDATA Trend function. These results in turn were processed using Macintosh computer Statview II program. Results: At the first exam 82% of eyes showed a global decrease of relative differential light (MD>2 dB) and in 67% of the eyes examined the distribution of the defect was inomogeneous (LV>6 dB). The analysis of variance for subgroups showed a major significant decrease of MD in high myopic patients (ANOVA test). A linear regression analysis (PERIDATA) highlighted a statistically significant change of MD value in 36% and of LV value in 34% of the eyes studied. An analysis for subgroups showed that the high myopic patients had the highest percentage of change of MD and LV (respectively 46% and 42%). Among the groups, there was no significance in the different progression of MD decrease (ANOVA test) Conclusions: Despite good intraocular pressure a deterioration of visual field is more frequent in high myopic patients (> -8.50 D), although its progression does not show any significant difference between myopic and emmetropic or hypermetropic eyes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Apraclonidine hydrochloride: pharmacology and clinical use

    No full text
Apraclonidine hydrochloride is a potent and relatively selective alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist. The alpha2-adrenoceptor is widely expressed in the eye, located in the anterior segment for example in the cornea, trabecular meshwork, iris, ciliary body epithelium and ciliary muscle and in the posterior segment in structures such as the retina, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. Apraclonidine is useful in the diagnosis of Horner Syndrome. It is also used to prevent intraocular pressure spikes after anterior segment laser surgery or following cataract surgery. It can also be used as a temporary adjunctive drug in patients with open-angle glaucoma on maximal therapy before laser trabeculoplasty or surgery, and as a treatment for ptosis secondary to injections of botulinum toxin on the upper third of the face
