    Nikos Nikolaidis de Chypre

Although Nikos Nikolaidis, the Cypriot (1884-1956), was in his time acclaimed as a master short-story writer and a distinguished painter, he often in his older age complained to be neglected, if not forgotten, by critics his peers and the general public. My research proves the contrary. Nikolaidis was admitted to the Pantheon of Modern Greek literature already during his lifetime and his literary work continues to be published, discussed, translated and honoured in many countries. As I hope to have shown in this paper, if Nikolaidis is still remembered it is not only because he was an excellent writer but equally because of his personality, the kindness, integrity and noblesse of his character, all qualities that permeated his writings, his paintings and his attitude towards all human beings.

The cinematic work of Nikos Nikolaidis and female representation

This thesis examines the work of Greek postmodern filmmaker Nikos Nikolaidis with a specific focus on female representation. I examine Nikolaidis as an auteur and I trace elements throughout his oeuvre that contribute to the formation of his authorial signature. Nikolaidis’s work is autobiographical and highly political. Nikolaidis’s cinema does not abide by the traditional theories of ‘Greekness’, and his main influences are American cinema, and specifically for film noir, rock ‘n’ roll culture and his antiauthoritarian ideology. All these elements are combined together within his work through the use of pastiche. I examine Nikolaidis’s work according to Richard Dyer’s notion of pastiche. Through pastiche he expresses nostalgia for rock ‘n’ roll culture and film noir, but also he expresses his concern for the future. Nikolaidis pastiches a selection of film genres and specific films in order to appropriate the elements that interest him. His pastiche work shows that the filmmaker addresses cineliterate audiences that would ideally understand his dialogue with the different genres and films he pastiches. With regards to female representation in Nikolaidis’s films, women are given leading roles, exhibit varying degrees of agency, and are presented as stronger and more powerful than men. However, their representations remain paradoxical, complex and misogynistic. While on the one hand, women are portrayed as powerful, independent, and able to subvert patriarchy, on the other hand, they are often used as props, rendering their representation inconsistent and problematic. Nikolaidis differentiates and juxtaposes two types of women throughout his work: the powerful women versus the unimportant women. Those who do not conform to the powerful female characteristics are characterised within the second category. Since Nikolaidis was highly influenced by film noir, his female protagonists pastiche the classic film noir figure of the femme fatale

Human-Robot Interactive Planning using Cross-Training: A Human Team Training Approach

    No full text
Robots are increasingly introduced to work in concert with people in high-intensity domains, such as manufacturing, space exploration and hazardous environments. Although there are numerous studies on human teamwork and coordination in these settings, very little prior work exists on applying these models to human-robot interaction. In this paper we propose a novel framework for applying prior art in Shared Mental Models (SMMs) to promote effective human-robot teaming. We present a computational teaming model to encode joint action in a human-robot team. We present results from human subject experiments that evaluate human-robot teaming in a virtual environment. We show that cross-training, a common practice used for improving human team shared mental models, yields statistically significant improvements in convergence of the computational teaming model (p=0.02) and in the human participants' perception that the robot performed according to their preferences (p=0.01), as compared to robot training using a standard interactive reinforcement learning approach. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi -- Kaynakça var.ÖZET Geleneksel Türk konut mimarlığının önemli bölümünü oluşturan ahşap yapılara güzel bir örnek olan Nikolaidis (Horozoğlu) Köşkü, İstanbul ili Adalar ilçesi Heybeliada’da bulunmaktadır. ABSTRACT Nikolaidis (Horozoğlu) Mansion, which is a good example of wooden structures that form an important part of traditional Turkish residential architecture, is located in Heybeliada, Adalar district of Istanbul. The wooden mansion with three floors was built in 1870. With the decision of the Istanbul No. II Culture and Natural Heritage Conservation Board of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, dated 14. 04. 1973 and numbered 7087, the building has been registered as second group cultural property to be protected. The mansion, which draws attention with its construction technique, materials and architecture, is a residence and has been used for accommodation in recent years. In the mansion, which has been in the use of the same family for the last 37 years, the eigen state of the main plan scheme can be read even though the temporary maintenance and repairs and unqualified additions made in the past years cause the structure to deteriorate. Within the scope of this thesis, the history and residential architecture of Heybeliada were investigated, and the mansion was compared with the other mansions on the island. Within the scope of the thesis study, the aim was to document the current situation of the Nikolaidis (Horozoğlu) Mansion by observing and documenting it during the field studies, to define its original character by researching its history, and to revitalize the building by preparing a restoration project according to contemporary restoration principles. In this study, first of all, the current situation of the mansion was examined on site, the researches were documented with drawings and photographs, and relief, restitution and restoration projects were prepared. Within the scope of the restoration project; the aim is to preserve the originality of the building and to maintain it in a sustainable way with the proposal of a new function. Human-robot cross-training: Computational formulation, modeling and evaluation of a human team training strategy

    No full text
We design and evaluate human-robot cross-training, a strategy widely used and validated for effective human team training. Cross-training is an interactive planning method in which a human and a robot iteratively switch roles to learn a shared plan for a collaborative task. We first present a computational formulation of the robot's interrole knowledge and show that it is quantitatively comparable to the human mental model. Based on this encoding, we formulate human-robot cross-training and evaluate it in human subject experiments (n = 36). We compare human-robot cross-training to standard reinforcement learning techniques, and show that cross-training provides statistically significant improvements in quantitative team performance measures. Additionally, significant differences emerge in the perceived robot performance and human trust. These results support the hypothesis that effective and fluent human-robot teaming may be best achieved by modeling effective practices for human teamwork.ABB Inc.U.S. Commercial Regional CenterAlexander S. Developing an Adaptive Robotic Assistant for Close Proximity Human-Robot Collaboration in Space

    No full text
In this paper, we present a framework for an adaptive and risk-aware robot motion planning and control, and discuss how such a framework could handle uncertainty in human workers' actions and robot localization. We build on our prior investigation, where we describe how uncertainty in human actions can be modeled using the entropy rate in a Markov Decision Process. We then describe how we can incorporate this model of uncertainty into simulations of a simple collaborative system, involving one human worker and one robotic assistant, to produce risk-aware robot motions. Next, we highlight the diffculties associated with localization uncertainty in a space environment and describe how we can incorporate this uncertainty into an adaptive system as well. Expected advantages of an adaptive system are described, including increases in overall effciency due to reductions in idle time, increases in concurrent motion, faster task execution, as well as subjective improvements in the worker's satisfaction with the assistant and reduced worker stress and fatigue. A pilot experiment designed to evaluate the benefits of introducing risk-aware motion planning is described. It is found that human-robot teams in which the robot utilizes risk-aware motion planning show on average 24% more concurrent motion and execute the task 13% faster, while simultaneously improving safety by having a 19.9% larger mean separation distance between the human and robot workers. Finally, possible future system developments and user studies are discussed
