Justice Michael A. Musmanno and Obscenity (1956-1967)
From 1957 to 1973, the United States Supreme Court was in the process of articulating and refining the standard by which a literary or artistic work would be classified as obscene. State supreme courts were likewise addressing this issue under their own constitutions and statutes. In Pennsylvania, Justice Michael A. Musmanno struggled against United States Supreme Court opinions that, in his opinion, opened the door to the spread of all types of obscene, lewd, and immoral materials throughout society. Justice Musmanno\u27s opinions on this matter were consistent throughout this time of change, and they frequently reflected his views on American democracy. This Article will review Justice Musmanno\u27s powerful dissents on key film and book censorship cases decided by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1956 to 1967

"Patrician looking but not patrician born, Musmanno was a self-made man memorable in his appearance and congenial to the times until his intentions and aspirations ran afoul of the circumstances. From his journals we see a man of extreme contradictions who sometimes exercised troubling and even controlling relationships over people and events"-
A Multistage Formulation for Generation Companies in a Multi-Auction Electricity Market
In this paper we deal with the definition of a decision model
for a producer operating in a multi-auction electricity
market. The decisions to be taken concern the commitment of the
generation plants and the quantity of energy required to offer to
each auction and to cover the bilateral contracts. We propose a
Multistage Stochastic Programming model in which the randomness
of the clearing prices is represented by means of a scenario tree.
The risk is modelled using a Conditional Value at Risk term in the
objective function. Experimental results are reported to show the
validity of our model and to discuss the influence of the risk
parameters on the optimal value
Transformation of Streptococcus sanguis Challis with a plasmid of Streptococcus pneumoniae
The present work is concerned with plasmid transformation of Streptococcus sanguis strain Challis with derivatives of pDP1/pSMB1, the only plasmid found to occur naturally in Streptococcus pneumoniae. Two recombinant plasmids derived from the cryptic pSMB1 were used: pDP27 (4.5 kb) conferring resistance to chloramphenicol (Cm), and pDP28 (7.8 kb), a shuttle plasmid, conferring resistance to Cm in Escherichia coli, and resistance to erythromycin (Em) in pneumococcus. It could be shown that pSMB1 can replicate in S. sanguis; in fact, Challis strain V288 was transformed to Cm-resistance and to Em-resistance by pDP27 and pDP28 respectively.
Shuttle plasmid pDP28 can transform S. sanguis both when isolated from pneumococcus and from E. coli, albeit with a different efficiency. The low frequency of transformation observed when pDP28 was isolated from E. coli DH1 (recA) was shown to be due to lack of multimeric forms of the plasmid in the DNA preparations obtained from this strain. When pDP28 was isolated from E. coli C600 (RecA+), multimeric forms were present, and transformations of S. sanguis was more efficiency Using pDP28 as vector in cloning experiments, where S. sanguis was the host of the recombinant DNA molecules, treatment of the vector with alkaline phosphatase inhibited the recovery of recombinant clones

MUTANTI pnc IN ESCHERICHIA COLI K-12
Mutans of E. coli K12 deficient in the recycling pathway of NAD were isolated. Nutritional properties of
mutants provide elucidations regarding NAD turnover and utilization of exogenous NAD
