Cross-correlation between gravitational wave detectors for detecting association with gamma ray bursts

Cross-correlation of the outputs of two gravitational wave (GW) detectors has recently been proposed-as a method for detecting statistical association between GWs and gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Unfortunately, the method can be effectively used only in the case of stationary noise. In this work a different cross-correlation algorithm is presented, which may effectively be applied also in nonstationary conditions for the cumulative analysis of a large number of GRBs. The value of the cross-correlation at zero delay, which is the only one expected to be correlated to any astrophysical signal, is compared with the distribution of cross-correlation of the same data for all nonzero delays within the integration time interval. This background distribution is Gaussian, so the statistical significance of an experimentally observed excess is well defined. Computer simulations using real noise data of the cryogenic GW detectors Explorer and Nautilus with superimposed deltalike signals were performed to test the effectiveness of the method, and theoretical estimates of its sensitivity were compared to the results of the simulation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of other cumulative techniques, showing that the algorithm is particularly effective in the case of non-Gaussian noise and of a large (100-1000 s) and unpredictable delay between GWs and GRBs

Occurrence of Hypotension in Older Participants. Which 24-hour ABPM Parameter Better Correlate With?

Objectives. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of hypotension in older participants and to identify which 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring parameter better correlated with the occurrence of hypotension. METHODS: We studied 588 elderly participants (mean age 78.7 ± 7.1 years; 70% women) who underwent a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring, without moderate-to-severe cognitive impairment, myocardial infarction, or stroke within the previous 6 months; renal (serum creatinine > 2.5 mg/dL), respiratory, or liver insufficiency; and atrial fibrillation. RESULTS: In older participants, the occurrence of systolic hypotension is very common (≈55% presenting at least one episode of systolic blood pressure (SBP) < 100 mmHg and about 20% presenting ≥10% of the SBP registrations < 100 mmHg). More than 30% of participants with 24-hour SBP, daytime, and nighttime above the reference threshold had hypotension. Hypotension did not correlated with BP variability indices (standard deviation of BPs). None of the parameters commonly present in 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring clinical reports is able to accurately identify those older participants with episode of hypotension. CONCLUSION: Episodes of SBP hypotension are extremely common in older participants and do not appear to relate to BP variability indices. Indeed, no parameter of 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring was capable to accurately identify the occurrence of hypotension. We expect that ongoing studies will contribute to identification of specific factors predicting hypotensive episodes in the older participants

L'età del fidanzamento secondo Modestino

In the famous passage of D. 23. 1. 14, taken from Modestino’s Differentiae, he initially affirmed that a marital engagement could have been contracted since the birth of the couple. But he soon appears to contradict himself by claiming that it was necessary for the engaged couple to be able to understand the act which they were about to perform by requesting for this purpose that the children be at least seven years old. Generally, interpreters have found the course of the passage at the very least, tortuous, and, apart from a few different voices, they have suggested that the current wording does not correspond to Modestino’s original interpretation; and that instead, it is the result of one or more alterations, which occurred during the post-classical age and/or age of Justinian. The ‘readings’ of the passage have been numerous and often divergent. This seems to justify a review, which, based on abundant and perspicuous readings that interpreters of the text have provided, intended to further deepen the fragment D. 23 .1 .14, both in its content (initial and successive, until Justinian) as the inside thoughts and work of Modestino. The review seems to make it plausible that the wording of D. 23.1.14 has been the result of the synthesis of successive disciplines from the Republican period until the time of Modestino. Most likely, the jurist carefully exposed those rules (probably drawing them from different sources dating from jurists who preceded him), trying to reach harmonization through a text that was projected on a discipline defined during the Severan period, fused with earlier rules on the age of engagement because he felt the need to keep track of those decisions made during the course of the Roman experience until his time. This way of proceeding appeared appropriate to the aims and techniques of the Severan jurists, who felt bound to give sure answers to the various people of the empire, taking into account the different affirmations of sources of case law, when they found themselves in difficulty and not knowing which rules to apply. The well merged synthesis of Modestino precisely intended to make the last discipline look like nothing more than the explanation and consequence of what could have been found in works of the previous ag

Study of magnetic interactions in a sample of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles in DC and AC fields

No full text
The study conducted on a sample of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with oleic acid has been performed by using DC and AC field techniques useful to determine the presence of a mixed state of interactions within the same sample, confirmed by the qualitative comparison between the results of the two techniques. In particular, a thorough study of the AC response of the sample, in presence of an overlapping DC field, allowed to determine the types of interactions observed by the DC analysis
