"Time and Poverty from a Developing Country Perspective"

No full text
This study is concerned with the measurement of poverty in the context of developing countries. We argue that poverty rankings must take into account time use dimensions of paid and unpaid work jointly. Reviewing the current state of the literature on this topic, our methodology introduces a critical but missing analytical distinction between time poverty and time deprivation. On this basis, we proceed to provide empirical evidence by using South African time use survey data compiled in 2000. Our findings show that existing methods that work well for advanced countries require modification when adopted in the case of a developing country. The results identify a group of adults who previously were inadvertently missing, as they were considered "time wealthy."Time Poverty Measurement; Time Use; Poverty; Policy

kucuk, mursel/0000-0002-0544-444X; BOLACALI, Memis/0000-0002-4196-2359The aim of this study was to determine the effects of genotype and non-genetic factors on the growth traits and survival rates of Turkish indigenous Hair goats (n=63) and their first crosses with Boer bucks (n=91), reared under a semi-intensive management system in the Van province of Turkey. The live weights of the kids at birth and on days 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 were determined to be 3.64, 8.89, 13.99, 18.97, 23.62, 27.22 and 30.44 kg, respectively. The average daily gains in the pre-weaning, post-weaning and overall periods were 171.09, 136.43 and 148.34 g, respectively. The multiple-birth kids had lower survival rates than the single-birth kids (P<0.01). As a result, it may be recommended to Hair goat breeders in the region to use Boer bucks in cross-breeding in order to ensure a better growth performance from the kids; to apply a sustainable selection program; and to improve management conditions. In addition, the data obtained from this study may be used as a model for designing policies on Hair goat breeding in this region.Yuzuncu Yil University, Office of Scientific Research ProjectsYuzuncu Yil University [2011-VF-B035]This experiment was supported financially by Yuzuncu Yil University, Office of Scientific Research Projects (grant project numbers 2011-VF-B035, 2011)

No full text
This chapter presents an overview of the Bitcoin and its impacts on the environment and economics from the viewpoint of carrying out a systematic analysis of the literature related to the environmental and economic effect of digital currency. It is aimed to summarize and critically examine the points of view regarding Bitcoin mining, considering its effects on global warming and the social environment, employing peer-reviewed data associated through literatures. As a result, this study provides the chance to analyze the set of knowledge regarding the effects of the Bitcoin mining procedure on the ecosystem in regard to energy use and CO2 emissions regarding unit root tests and causality test based on nonlinear models. The results show that there exists a nonlinear causal relationship between statistics on Bitcoin mining and the CO2 emissions. The results also imply that Bitcoin remains to be a tool utilized in the economic environment for a range of objectives despite high energy consumption and some negative environmental impact within the scope of renewable energy; hence, authorities would take Bitcoin mining impacts into account to reduce CO2 emissions. © Ayyuce Memis Karatas, Emin Karatas, Ayhan Kapusuzoglu and Nildag Basak Ceylan

An enrichment unit on local water resources and water conservation to supplement eighth grade earth science curriculum

No full text
Currently, there is no written curriculum for educating students about local water resources and water conservation practices in the Glassboro Eighth Grade Earth Science Curriculum. Utilizing all available references and agencies, (federal, state and local) the author created an enrichment unit dealing with local water resources and water conservation practices to supplement the existing Eighth Grade Science Curriculum, specifically the Geology unit of the Merrill Earth Science textbook. The lessons are hands-on activities which promote critical thinking, problem solving, and cooperative learning. Though designed for a specific audience and for a specific reason, lessons in the unit can be easily adapted by any teacher to incorporate environmental education activities in their classrooms

The watershed between right and left hepatic artery territories: findings on CT scans after transcatheter oily chemoembolization of hepatic tumors. A preliminary report

No full text
The goals of this study were to delineate the boundary between the right and left hepatic artery territories by computed tomography (CT), to compare this boundary with the middle scissura of Couinaud's segmental anatomy, and to discuss the clinical implications of these findings. The 18 patients who underwent transcatheter oily chemoembolization (TOCE) of liver tumors via the right or left hepatic artery, were examined with an immediate postembolization CT scan. We measured the orientation of the watershed line between the right and left hepatic artery territories and the orientation of the middle scissura on other available sectional imaging modalities, and then compared the middle scissura with the arterial watershed line. A part of segment IV was fed by the right hepatic artery in two of 18 (11.1%) patients. Moreover, one of 4 segment TV lesions was embolized via right hepatic artery infusion. Thus, in 11.1% of cases there was no coincidence between the arterial watershed line and the middle scissura. Some segment TV lesions may be fed and therefore embolized only via right hepatic artery infusion in TOCE for liver tumor

© 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology. The advancing edge profile is a powerful determinant of tumor behavior in many organs. In this study, a grading system assessing the tumor-host interface was developed and tested in 181 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs), 63 of which were <=2 cm. Three tumor slides representative of the spectrum (least, medium, and most) of invasiveness at the advancing edge of the tumor were selected, and then each slide was scored as follows. Well-demarcated/encapsulated, 1 point; Mildly irregular borders and/or minimal infiltration into adjacent tissue, 2 points; Infiltrative edges with several clusters beyond the main tumor but still relatively close, and/or satellite demarcated nodules, 3 points; No demarcation, several cellular clusters away from the tumor, 4 points; Exuberantly infiltrative pattern, scirrhous growth, dissecting the normal parenchymal elements, 5 points. The sum of the rankings on the three slides was obtained. Cases with scores of 3–6 were defined as \"non/minimally infiltrative\" (NI; n = 77), 7–9 as \"moderately infiltrative\" (MI; n = 68), and 10–15 as \"highly infiltrative\" (HI; n = 36). In addition to showing a statistically significant correlation with all the established signs of aggressiveness (grade, size, T-stage), this grading system was found to be the most significant predictor of adverse outcomes (metastasis, progression, and death) on multivariate analysis, more strongly than T-stage, while Ki-67 index did not stand the multivariate test. As importantly, cases <=2 cm were also stratified by this grading system rendering it applicable also to this group that is currently placed in \"watchful waiting\" protocols. In conclusion, the proposed grading system has a strong, independent prognostic value and therefore should be considered for integration into routine pathology practice after being evaluated in validation studies with larger series

memis ozgul, betul/0000-0002-3291-6174; Bezgin, Tugba/0000-0002-3025-308XThe aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographical success of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and gutta-percha/AH-Plus used as a root canal filling material in primary second molars without successors. A total of 16 patients (9 girls, 7 boys) aged 6-13 years (mean: 10.5) were selected and randomly distributed into the treatment groups. Children were recalled for clinical and radiographic examination at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months. Differences in treatment outcomes were analysed using chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests. Clinically, there was no significant difference in the success rates between the groups at the end of a 3-year follow-up period (MTA: 100%; Gutta-percha/AH-Plus: 70%) (P > 0.05). However, radiographically, there was a significant difference between the groups (MTA: 80%; gutta-percha/AH-Plus: 300%) (P < 0.05). The present study showed that MTA can be recommended for use in root canal treatment of primary molars without successors based on better radiographic success
