Fil: Katz, Claudio Isaac. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Sociales. Hydrogen peroxide formation and iron ion oxidoreduction linked to NADH oxidation in radish plasmalemma vesicles
Previously, we showed the presence in radish (Raphanus sativus L.) plasmalemma vesicles of an NAD(P)H oxidase, active at pH 4.5–5.0, which elicits the formation of anion superoxide (Vianello and Macri (1989) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 980, 202–208). In this work, we studied the role of hydrogen peroxide and iron ions upon this oxidase activity NADH oxidation was stimulated by ferrous ions and, to a lesser extent, by ferric ions. Salicylate and benzoate, two known hydroxyl radical scavengers, inhibited both basal and iron-stimulated NADH oxidase activity. The iron chelators EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and DFA (deferoxamine melysate) at high concentrations (2 mM) inhibited the NADH oxidation, whereas they were ineffective at lower concentrations (80 μM); the subsequent addition of ferrous ions caused a rapid and limited increase of oxygen consumption which later ceased. Hydrogen peroxide was not detected during NADH oxidation but, in the presence of salicylate, its formation was found in significant amounts. NADH oxidase activity was also associated to a Fe2+ oxidation which was only partialy inhibited by salicylate. Ferrous ion oxidation was partially inhibited by catalase and prevented by superoxide dismutase, while ferric ion reduction was abolished by catalase and unaffected by superoxide dismutase. These results show that during NADH oxidation iron ions undergo oxidoreduction and that hydrogen peroxide dismutase. These results show that during NADH oxidation iron this oxidation appears linked to the univalent oxidoreduction of iron ions by a reduced flavoprotein of radish plasmalemma which is then converted to a radical form. The latter, reacting with oxygen generates the superoxide anion which dismutates to H2O2. Hydrogen peroxide, through a Fenton's reaction, may react with Fe2+ to produce hydroxyl radicals, or with Fe3+ to generate the superoxide anion
The challenges of Macri before Trump and the G20
When he took office, Macri launched a foreign policy aimed at what he called “go back to the world”, to expand exports, attract investment and facilitate international credit. As part of his strategy of alignment with the United States and the European powers, he proposed Argentina as the venue for the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and also the G20 Presidential Summit. On November 30 and December 1, 2018, Trump, Xi Jinping, Merkel, Macron, Putin and the other G20 leaders will meet in Buenos Aires in an international, regional and local complex and uncertain context. The crisis of the G7 Presidential Summit held last June in Canada, the overheating of the trade war between the United States and China, the tensions in the Middle East for the US unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the stalemate of the WTO, the emergence of new leaderships such as in the López Obrador in Mexico and the negative impact of the economic and social crisis in Argentina, with the consequent growing deterioration of the image of the Macri government, augur a potentially explosive scenario, totally different from what Macri envisioned when he proposed Argentina as the venue for the first presidential summit of the G20 in South America, imagining that it would be the perfect opportunity to project himself as a new regional leader. In this article we will analyze the risks and challenges Argentina face before this crucial global meeting.Fil: Morgenfeld, Leandro Ariel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Examining Argentina's New Foreign Policy Under Macri
Argentina’s isolation from global financial markets appeared to be total and long-lasting. Now the country is on the verge of ending its isolation: the injunctions preventing it from borrowing on international markets are set to be lifted (provided the Argentine Congress approves the deal with the holdout creditors) and Buenos Aires is opening the door to foreign investment. This is the most high-profile example of the rapid transformation effected by President Mauricio Macri since he took office in December. The new president is clearly planning to make further significant changes to Argentina’s foreign policy and chart a new course for its relations with both its neighbours and the world’s major powers.Fil: Merke, Mario Federico. "On the Robustness of Alternative Rankings Methodologies For Australian and New Zealand Economics Departments"
Just as friendly arguments based on an ignorance of facts eventually led to the creation of the definitive Guinness Book of World Records, any argument about university rankings has seemingly been a problem without a solution. To state the obvious, alternative rankings methodologies can and do lead to different rankings. This paper evaluates the robustness of rankings of Australian and New Zealand economics teaching departments for 1988-2002 and 1996-2002 using alternative rankings methodologies, and compares the results with the rankings obtained by Macri and Sinha (2006). In the overall mean rankings for both 1988- 2006 and 1996-2002, the University of Melbourne is ranked first, followed by UWA and ANU.
From Proximity Legitimacy to Populism: Analyzing the Change in the Discourse of Mauricio Macri
The article analyzes the change in the political discourse of former Argentine President Mauricio Macri. The article analyzes the change from a legitimacy of proximity and technocratic discourse that characterized the campaign prior to the PASO of 2019, to a populist discourse in the context of the campaign called “Sí, se puede” that emerged after the defeat in the elections. The article shows how political leaders use populism, technocracy and proximity legitimacy as discursive political strategies and how they adopt them in their discourseto try to gain popular supportFil: Curto, Rodrigo.
