Partial M-Quantile Regression for Predictive Mantainance

No full text
In Industry 4.0 factories, innovative prediction tools are adopted so that data can be systematically processed into information that can explain uncertainties and support decisions. Predictive manufacturing systems begin with acquiring data from monitored assets using appropriate sensors to extract various signals. These signals can then be integrated with historical data into extensive datasets containing a multitude of variables. Consequently, addressing the challenge of reducing dimensionality becomes of paramount importance. Dimension reduction techniques such as partial least squares (PLS) have recently gained attention to deal with the problem of big datasets with a large number of correlated variables. Standard PLS approaches confine the estimation to examining only average effects, resulting in an insufficient portrayal. In this paper, we combine the standard PLS technique with M-quantile regression. The proposed approach aims at offering a more comprehensive view of the effect of various dimensions on the degradation of etching equipment in the microchip fabrication process

Equivalence of two series of spherical representations of a free group

No full text
The spherical principal series of a non-commutative free group may be analytically continued to yield a series of uniformly bounded representations, much as the spherical representations π_{(1/2)+ it} of SL(2, R) may be analytically continued in the strip 0 < Re z < 1. This series of uniformly bounded representations was constructed and studied by A. M. MANTERO and A. ZAPPA. Independently T. PYTLIK and R. SZWARC introduced and studied representations of the free group which contain a series of subrepresentations indexed by spherical functions. Both series consist of irreducible representations and include the spherical complementary series. The aim of this paper is to prove that the non-unitary uniformly bounded representations of the two series are also equivalent

Statistical modelling of spads for time-of-flight lidar

Time-of-Flight (TOF) based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a widespread technique for distance measurements in both single-spot depth ranging and 3D mapping. Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) detectors provide single-photon sensitivity and allow in-pixel integration of a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) to measure the TOF of single-photons. From the repetitive acquisition of photons returning from multiple laser shots, it is possible to accumulate a TOF histogram, so as to identify the laser pulse return from unwelcome ambient light and compute the desired distance information. In order to properly predict the TOF histogram distribution and design each component of the LiDAR system, from SPAD to TDC and histogram processing, we present a detailed statistical modelling of the acquisition chain and we show the perfect matching with Monte Carlo simulations in very different operating conditions and very high background levels. We take into consideration SPAD non-idealities such as hold-off time, afterpulsing, and crosstalk, and we show the heavy pile-up distortion in case of high background. Moreover, we also model non-idealities of timing electronics chain, namely, TDC dead-time, limited number of storage cells for TOF data, and TDC sharing. Eventually, we show how the exploit the modelling to reversely extract the original Li-DAR return signal from the distorted measured TOF data in different operating conditions

Complications of SARS-CoV-2 Infection During Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Case Series

No full text
Introduction: Vaccination strongly reduces the risk of hospitalization and death due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the severity of the acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and the degree of protection exerted over time by vaccination remains to be fully elucidated among hospitalized comorbid and vulnerable patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: We report a case series of nine hospitalized vulnerable patients who developed a SARS-CoV-2 infection during a cardiac rehabilitation inpatient program. Results: Age ranged from 50 to 81 years. All but one patient had received at least three doses of anti-COVID-19 vaccine more than 4 months before the cardiac event. Indications for cardiac rehabilitation included acute coronary syndromes, congestive heart failure, heart valve surgery, and coronary artery bypass graft. After the confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, all patients developed symptoms. Eight patients developed at least one SARS-CoV-2-related complication, including a significant increase in high-sensitivity troponin I levels, new-onset hypoxemia, persistent atrial fibrillation, non-sustained ventricular tachycardia and recurrent sinus arrest, pericardial effusion, and a persistent increase in blood pressure. Conclusion: Almost all patients developed complications which, however, did not evolve towards more severe expressions of the disease. These data suggest that even in this new phase of the pandemic, vaccination may exert a potential role to reduce the risk of progression towards more severe disease of SARS-CoV-2 infection in vulnerable patients with cardiovascular comorbidities

An acoustic emission-based approach to structural health monitoring of pre-stressed concrete railway sleepers

No full text
Railway sleepers represent an essential element of the track; indeed, their structural integrity is closely related to important technical and safety issues. Today, periodical visual inspections are the only method applied to check the status of sleepers but are limited to visible surfaces, whereas the early detection of in-service cracks in the whole volume of sleepers would provide great advantages in terms of maintenance and management. The aim of the paper is to propose an acoustic emission (AE)-based structural health monitoring (SHM) approach that is able to detect the initiation and propagation of cracks in in-service pre-stressed concrete sleepers. The investigation is carried out in the laboratory, comparing the results obtained by acoustic emission monitoring and digital image correlation when subjecting pre-stressed concrete sleepers, taken from production, to both static and cyclic loads. The main points dealt with in the paper include the sensitivity of acoustic emission to detect damage development and the signal processing approach needed for defining effective damage indexes. Given the encouraging results, the paper is the first step in developing an affordable monitoring system, to be embedded into sleepers, that is able to be part of a complete track monitoring system

Modelling Topics of Car Accidents Events: A Text Mining Approach

No full text
Car accident causes are relevant both for insurance companies as well as for policy makers. The former are interested into the dynamics of the accidents in order to evaluate responsibilities, the latter to foster good driving behavior for the sake of social benefit, too. By using a large set of medical and police reports, and by exploiting Natural Language Processing techniques we aim at grasping latent information useful to classify them according to the relevance of their content
