Life as a Game With no Rules in Tom Stoppard’s "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" and Samuel Beckett’s "Waiting for Godot"
Bakalaura darbs sastāv no 5 nodaļām. Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” is widely perceived as the “definition” of the theatre of the absurd, while Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” draws very much from the above-mentioned work of the Irish playwright. So, by choosing these plays, two very important and central writings of the theatre of the absurd come under examination. It, in turn, increases the significance and the value of the research.
The paper provides the analysis of the elements shaping the perception of life as possessing no regulations in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead”. The analysis mainly focuses on revealing the evolution of the abovementioned concept in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” as compared to “Waiting for Godot”.
The paper consists of five chapters, and the first one presents the survey of theoretical literature on the main aspects of the theatre of the absurd as well as its roots and philosophical influences, and Samuel Beckett and Tom Stoppard as prominent representatives of the genre. Chapter two contains material on existentialism in general, and the third chapter deals with Albert Camus’ absurd thought and its influence on the theatre of the absurd. Chapters four and five comprise the analysis of the elements revealing life as having no strict guidelines, as well as the comparative analysis of the two plays
One of the original features of its experimental design is the DIRC, the Cerenkov detector used to separate charged pions and kaons. A look-up table is implemented to correct for its alignment, and allows the DIRC to reach its design performance, a pion versus kaon separation power of 4*(sigma) at a momentum of 3 GeV/c. The search for CP violation in the decay channel B^0 to pp should result in constraints on the angle a of the unitarity triangle, one of the parameters of the standard model. The goal of this analysis is to measure CP violating parameters along with the other parameters entering the description of the decay time probability distribution function. A maximum likelihood method combines the time information with e+e-> qq' continuum background discriminating variables, some of which are summarized in a neural network. The other background, constituted of the other decay modes of the B, is taken into account with corrective terms in the fit. This analysis yields the best measurements for this channel up to date, and results in an indication of direct CP violation. In order to use these measurements to constrain the parameters of the standard model, the long distance contribution of the decay amplitudes has to be extracted from a model. For one such model, "QCD factorisation", a validation test confronts the model predictions with the experimental data on the charmless decays of the B mesons. The present status seems to be a disagreement, which could be reduced in the future with better experimental and theoretical knowledge of B decays.ORSAY-PARIS 11-BU Sciences (914712101) / SudocSudocFranceF
CP violation in the B meson system and prospects at an asymmetric B meson factory
We present an overview of tlie expected plienomenology of CP violation in the B system. The
prospects for observing CP-violating signals at an asymmetric B-Factory are analyzed. We
discuss how these phenomena can be used to test the unitarity of the Cahibbo-Kobayashi-
Maskawa matrix, and to either verify the Standard Model mechanism of CP violation or
provide clear evidence for new physics. The vork of A.P. has been supportcd in part by CYCIT, Spain. under grant No.

The correlation between intolerance of uncertainty and electrodermal activity
The aim of this study was to measure correlation between the intolerance of uncertainty and electrodermal activity 1) in a certain and uncertain situation, 2) in the case of neutral and negative auditory stimuli, 3) during cue demonstration and after stimulus. In this study 25 participants with an average age of M = 24,62, SD = 4,42 took part. A series of images and sound signals were shown while measuring electrodermal activity. The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale - Short Form and DASS-21 were used. The internal consistency of Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale was good, but convergent validity was weak. It was concluded that individuals with higher intolerance of uncertainty had higher electrodermal activity during both negative and neutral stimulus presentation, thus confirming that individuals with higher intolerance of uncertainty generalize negative reactivity to other situations
