Sparsity Data Reduction In Textual Network Analysis. An exercise on Sustainability meaning

    No full text
In this paper, we propose a new strategy to derive an unweighted adjacency matrix from an affiliation matrix. The strategy is based on the use of a biclustering technique in order to reduce the sparsity of the matrix without changing the network structure. As an example, we implemented this approach to seek the common meaning of the term sustainability by using an affiliation matrix characterized by a core-periphery structure. The application of BiMax Biclustering algorithm shows a sparsity reduction of the unweighted adjacency matrix with an invariant network structure

Clear aligners: A network and bibliometric analysis of 50 pivotal articles

    No full text
Background. A bibliometric analysis uses statistical and mathematical methods to analyze the published literature, extracting meaningful information that helps to identify trends, assess research impact, and vi-sualize key data patterns through graphs and trendlines. Objectives. The aim of the study was to list the top 50 papers on clear aligners, evaluate them critically and apply a bibliometric analysis to investigate the achievements and prospects in this field of study. Material and methods. A computerized database search (Scopus) was conducted on September 24, 2023, to find articles on clear aligners published in the scientific literature between 2013 and 2023. The top 50 cited manuscripts were chosen. Author-based characteristics were obtained from the Scopus database. The dataset from ClarivateTM InCites Benchmarking & AnalyticsTM and Journal Citation Reports (JCR) was used to determine parameters based on journals and articles. To improve the visual analysis, the keywords were collected systematically from the chosen articles. Results. The database search produced a directory of the 50 most often cited articles out of 1,405 papers. Of the 50 most frequently cited works on clear aligners, 35 (70.0%) were original research studies and 15 (30.0%) were reviews. The keyword-network analysis indicated ‘removable orthodontic appliance’ as the most important and repetitive keyword. Conclusions. The results of the present bibliometric study indicated that clear aligner therapy (CAT)-related papers received increasing citations. The study determined the most influential articles by highlighting their authors and the journals in which the papers were published

Identification of freeway macroscopic models using information from mobile phones

    No full text
A method for the identification of a freeway macroscopic model is presented. The model is based on the idea of dividing a freeway trunk in sections covered by the cells of the wireless network and associated with state variables describing density of vehicles, mean velocity, and percentage of active mobile phones. Using the density and hand-off measurements from the cellular network, the parameters of such model are identified via an algorithm based on stochastic approximation. Successful simulation results are reported and discusse

An approximate solution to optimal Lp state estimation problems

    No full text
We consider optimal estimation problems characterized by a state vector with i) dynamics described via a differential equation with Lipschitz nonlinearities, ii) partial information provided via a Lipschitz nonlinear mapping, and iii) an Lp norm measure of the estimation error to be minimized. An approximate solution of such optimal estimation problem is searched for by restricting the optimization to parameterized nonlinear approximators such as feedforward neural networks. The parameters of a feedforward neural network are the neural weights. This approach entails a constrained nonlinear programming problem, whose constraints are given by the dynamic and measurement equations, and the conditions guaranteeing the stability of the estimation error. To optimize the parameters values of neural networks an algorithm is developed that is based on appropriate sampling of the state and error spaces. Choices of the sample points are devised based on the notion of dispersion, which allow one to obtain an approximate solution of the optimal estimation problem by a small sample complexity. © 2005 AACC

Optimization of an eMule-like modifier strategy

    No full text
One of the main issues in peer-to-peer file-sharing services is to ensure balanced transfers of data among peers. For instance, the popular eMule file-sharing client interface implements techniques based on a credit system and time modifiers, in order to guarantee a fair degree of contribution/reward, e.g., to prevent leeching. However, fixed heuristic modifiers may not be able to guarantee a fair treatment for every peer participating in the service. This paper introduces an optimized strategy to compute modifiers in order to promote cooperation among peers, while guaranteeing a suitable degree of fairness. Simulations are provided to compare the proposed mechanism to the standard one adopted by the popular eMule client interface
