Collective nostalgia and domestic country bias
Three experiments tested and supported the hypothesis that collective nostalgia—nostalgia that is experienced when one thinks of oneself in terms of a particular social identity or as a member of a particular group and that concerns events or objects related to this group—increases individuals’ ethnocentric preference for ingroup (compared to outgroup) products. Greek participants who recalled collective nostalgic experiences shared with other Greeks (compared to controls) evinced a highly robust preference for Greek (compared to foreign) consumer products. This preference is referred to as domestic country bias. Following a systematic replicate-and-extend strategy, we demonstrated that both idiographic and nomothetic inductions of collective nostalgia increased domestic country bias (Experiment 1), that collective nostalgia increased domestic country bias across different product categories (Experiment 2), and that collective self-esteem mediated the effect of collective nostalgia on domestic country bias and did so independently of positive affect (Experiment 3). We discuss theoretical and practical implications
Multi-view clustering for mining heterogeneous social network data
Paper presented at the Workshop on Information Retrieval over Social Networks, 31st European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR'09), Toulouse, France, April 6-9, 2009Uncovering community structure is a core challenge in social network analysis. This is a significant challenge for large networks where there is a single type of relation in the network (e.g. friend or knows). In practice there may be other types of relation, for instance demographic or geographic information, that also reveal network structure. Uncovering structure in such multi-relational networks presents a greater challenge due to the difficulty of integrating information from different, often discordant views. In this paper we describe a system for performing cluster analysis on heterogeneous multi-view data, and present an analysis of the research themes in a bibliographic literature network, based on the integration of both co-citation links and text similarity relationships between papers in the network.Science Foundation IrelandConference detailshttp://ecir09.irit.fr/access.ph
A critical evaluation, challenges, and future perspectives of using artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in smart classrooms
The term "Smart Classroom" has evolved over time and nowadays reflects the technological advancements incorporated in educational spaces. The rapid advances in technology, and the need to create more efficient and creative classes that support both in-class and remote activities, have led to the integration of Artificial Intelligence and smart technologies in smart classes. In this paper we discuss the concept of Artificial Intelligence in Education and present a literature review related to smart classroom technology, with an emphasis on emerging technologies such as AI-related technologies. As part of this survey key technologies related to smart classes used for effective class management that enhance the convenience of classroom environments, the use of different types of smart teaching aids during the educational process and the use of automated performance assessment technologies are presented. Apart from discussing a variety of technological accomplishments in each of the aforementioned areas, the role of AI is discussed, allowing the readers to comprehend the importance of AI in key technologies related to smart classes. Furthermore, through a SWOT analysis, the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of adopting AI in smart classes are presented, while the future perspectives and challenges in utilizing AI-based techniques in smart classes are discussed. This survey targets educators and AI professionals so that the former get informed about the potential, and limitations of AI in education, while the latter can get inspiration from the challenges and peculiarities of educational AI-based systems
Tourism and uncertainty: a machine learning approach
In this paper, we attempt to create a unique forecasting model to forecast out-of-sample the tourism demand in 24 European Union countries. The initial dataset included 34 relevant variables of annual frequency that span the period from 2010 to 2020 for 40 countries. A data prefiltering process resulted in a final set of 17 relevant variables for 24 countries. Additionally, in the effort to investigate the impact of uncertainty on international tourism, apart from the traditional factors that affect tourism, we also include variables that measure various forms of uncertainty: we use the World Pandemic Uncertainty (WPU) Index, the Global CBOE Volatility Index, the Political Globalisation Index, the Economic Globalisation Index, and the Political Stability Index. In the empirical part of our research, we employ and compare in terms of their forecasting accuracy a set of six state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, the Support Vector Regression with both a linear and an RBF kernel, the Random Forests, the Decision Trees, the KNN, and gradient-boosting trees. The results show that the Gradient-Boosting Trees algorithm outperforms the other five models providing the most accurate forecasts with a MAPE of 0.10% and 1.36% in the training and the out-of-sample tests, respectively
Διερεύνηση της συσχέτισης της επισκληρίδιου αναλγησίας κατά τον κολπικό τοκετό για την εμφάνιση δυσμενών εκβάσεων στην νεογνική και νηπιακή ηλικία
Introduction: The most widely applied method used to relieve pain in childbirth is epidural analgesia, which is considered the most effective and most accepted method. Studies have reported that epidural analgesia has a direct pharmacological effect on the newborn. Although the use of epidural analgesia during childbirth is becoming increasingly widespread in developed countries, a correlation with its effects on the neonate and toddler has not yet been adequately established, leading to the present study.
Aim: Investigating the association of epidural analgesia during vaginal delivery as a risk factor for adverse neonatal and toddler outcomes
Material and Method: The method used was a search of the relevant Greek and international literature in databases (PUBMED, CI-NAHL) with keywords (epidural analgesia or epidural or epidurals) and (outcomes or benefits or effects or effects or impact of effectiveness) and (neonate or neonatal or premature or preterm or newborn) and (toddlers or infants or children under 3 years old) in all possible combinations.
Results: Τhe search resulted in 8 studies, over the period 2015-2023, that met the predefined criteria. Through the literature search it was found that epidural analgesia during delivery was a risk factor for adverse neonatal and toddler outcomes such as autism spectrum disorders, neurodevelopmental complications, presence of neonatal infection, lower Apgar index score, respiratory distress and increased neonatal ICU stay.
Cοnclusions: Epidural analgesia contributes to health problems in newborns and toddler. However, there is a need for further research aimed at fully informing women about the effects and complications of epidural analgesia during childbirth.Εισαγωγή: Η πιο ευρέως εφαρμοσμένη μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιείται για την ανακούφιση του πόνου στον τοκετό είναι η επισκληρίδιος αναλγησία, η οποία θεωρείται ως η πιο αποτελεσματική και η πιο αποδεκτή μέθοδος.
Υλικό και Μέθοδος: Η μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιήθηκε ήταν η αναζήτηση της σχετικής ελληνικής και διεθνούς βιβλιογραφίας σε βάσεις δεδομένων (PUBMED, CI-NAHL) με λέξεις κλειδιά (epidural analgesia or epidural or epidurals) και (outcomes or benefits or effects or impact of effectiveness) και (neonate or neonatal or premature or preterm or newborn) και (toddlers or infants or children under 3 years old) σε όλους τους πιθανούς συνδυασμούς.
Complete
