    Photopatch Testing

    No full text
In dermatology photopatch tests evaluate the delayed type hypersensitivity that clinically manifests as photodermatoses. This diagnostic test aims to re-create triggering conditions, namely photoallergen + UVA, capable to sustain photodermatoses development. Despite its relatively simple execution, the challenging part remains the result interpretation, in which a mix of experience, clinical training and medical history remain fundamental for establishing the correct diagnosis. In order to minimize the inter-observer variability a validated set of substances were approved by a European Consensus in 2012: 20 substances compose the photopatch test baseline series and additional other 15 substances for special populations. This chapter is centered on photopatch test practical and theoretical aspects in dermatology with a particular focus on methodology

Late Quaternary incision and deposition in an active volcanic setting: The Volturno valley fill, southern Italy

    No full text
Extensive illustration of depositional facies, ostracod and foraminiferal assemblages, and Late Quaternary stratigraphic architecture is offered for the first time from beneath the modern coastal plain of Volturno River, the longest river in southern Italy. Proximity to an active volcanic district, including quiescent Vesuvius Volcano, provides an easily identifiable stratigraphic marker (Campania Grey Tuff or CGT), up to 55 m thick, emplaced 39 ky cal BP by a large-volumeexplosive pyroclastic eruption. Identification of top CGT to amaximum depth of 30 mallows tracing out the shape of a 15–20 kmwide Late Quaternary palaeovalley incised by Volturno River into the thick ignimbritic unit immediately after its deposition. A terraced palaeotopography of the valley flanks is reconstructed on the basis of core data. Above the basal fluvial deposits, the early Holocene transgressive facies consist of a suite of estuarine (freshwater to brackish) deposits. These are separated from overlying transgressive barrier sands by a distinctive wave ravinement surface. Upwards, a distinctive shallowing- upward succession of middle–late Holocene age is interpreted to reflect initiation and subsequent progradation of a wave-dominated delta system, with flanking strandplains, in response to reduced rate of sea-level rise. The turnaround from transgressive to highstand conditions is identified on the basis of subtle changes in the meiofauna. These enable tracking of themaximumflooding surface into its updip (lagoonal/estuarine) counterpart, thus highlighting the role of refined palaeontological criteria as a powerful tool for high-resolution sequence- stratigraphic studies

On the role of unobserved preference heterogeneity in discrete choice models of labor supply

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of unobserved preference heterogene- ity in structural discrete choice models of labor supply. Within this framework, unobserved heterogeneity has been estimated either parametrically or nonpara- metrically through random coefficient models. Nevertheless, the estimation of such models by means of standard, gradient-based methods is often difficult, in particular if the number of random parameters is high. For this reason, the role of unobserved taste variability in empirical studies is often constrained since only a small set of coefficients is assumed to be random. However, this simplification may affect the estimated labor supply elasticities and the subsequent policy pre- scriptions. In this paper, we propose a new estimation method based on an EM algorithm that allows us to fully consider the effect of unobserved heterogeneity nonparametrically. Results show that labor supply elasticities and policy prescrip- tions do change significantly only when the full set of coefficients is assumed to be random. Moreover, we analyse the behavioural effects of the introduction of a working-tax credit scheme in the Italian tax-benefit system and show that the magnitude of labor supply reactions and the post-reform income distribution can differ significantly depending on the specification of unobserved heterogeneity

The recent reform of the Italian personal income tax: distributiveand efficiency effects

    No full text
The aim of this paper is the study of three reforms of the Italian personal income tax that have been implemented over the past six years. The analysis is carried out in three stages. In the first stage we study their distributive effects using a static microsimulation model. In the second stage we focus onthe labour supply effects by means of a structural microeconometric model of household labour supply; finally, we analyze the distributive effects of the reforms accounting for labour supply reactions. Our findings confirm that theextension of the no‐tax area had positive effects in terms of both redistribution and work incentives, while greater benefits for households with children improved income distribution but with negative effects on the labour supply of married women

Antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of phytochemicals from Quince (Cydonia vulgaris) peels

Fifty-nine secondary metabolites have been isolated from Cydonia vulgaris peels and characterised on the basis of their spectroscopic features. Among them, five metabolites, 3b-(18-hydroxylinoleoyl)-28- hydroxyurs-12-ene (12), 3b-linoleoylurs-12-en-28-oic acid (15), 3b-oleoyl-24-hydroxy-24-ethylcholesta- 5,28(29)-diene (24), tiglic acid 1-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (35), and 6,9-dihydroxymegastigmasta-5, 7-dien-3-one 9-O-b-D-gentiobioside (46), have been isolated and elucidated for the first time. All of the compounds were tested for their radical-scavenging and antioxidant activities by measuring their capacity to scavenge the 2,20-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, and anion superoxide radical and to induce the reduction of Mo(VI) to Mo(V). The antiproliferative activity of all the most abundant compounds by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) bioassay on murine B16-F1 melanoma cells has been also assessed

DAPIPRAZOLE, A SELECTIVE ALPHA-1 ADRENOCEPTOR ANTAGONIST, INHIBITS DIURESIS BUT NOT POLYDIPSIA PRODUCED BY AMPHETAMINE IN RATS

    No full text
Chronic amphetamine administration has been found to produce diuresis and polydipsia in rats. We have found that dapiprazole acutely suppresses the diuretic, but not the ingestive, effects of amphetamine. To see whether diuresis is the physiological stimulus driving amphetamine-mediated polydipsia, we injected rats daily with d,l-amphetamine and the alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist dapiprazole. Throughout 19 days of treatment, dapiprazole completely prevented the increased urine output produced by amphetamine, but did not effect the development of polydipsia. This finding rules out a renal site of the primary action for amphetamine-mediated polydipsia and proposes water and electrolyte imbalance produced by chronic amphetamine administration as a model of the polydipsia and hyponatremia that develop in some psychotic patients
