33rd International Symposium on Essential Oils -- SEP 04-07, 2002 -- LISBON, PORTUGALWOS: 000182501400010PubMed ID: 12710728The essential oil of Heracleum sphondylium L. subsp. ternatum (Velen.) Brummit (Umbelliferae) was isolated from crushed seeds by means of hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Major components were identified as 1-octanol (50.3%), octyl butyrate (24.6%), and octyl acetate (7.3%). Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated using microdilution broth and agar diffusion methods. The bioactive constituent of the essential oil was determined as 1-octanol by using a bioautography assay

Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This set of two letter is regarding the progress towards securing money for completion of land acquisition for the Smoky Mountains National Park project. Following are brief summaries of each of these letters: Dennis G. Brummitt to Zebulon Weaver, July 14, 1932 In this letter Brummitt asks Weaver about his progress towards securing money for the park’s development from the Congress. Zebulon Weaver to Dennis G. Brummitt, July 20, 1932 In this letter Weaver apprises Brummitt of the progress of his bills in the Congress regarding appropriation of money for the national park. According to Weaver, he was working on getting some money for the park through the Reconstruction Finance Commission

A region based approach to background modeling in a wavelet multi-resolution framework

In the field of detection and monitoring of dynamic objects in quasi-static scenes, background subtraction techniques where background is modeled at pixel-level, although showing very significant limitations, are extensively used. In this work we propose a novel approach to background modeling that operates at region-level in a wavelet based multi-resolution framework. Based on a segmentation of the background, characterization is made for each region independently as a mixture of K Gaussian modes, considering the model of the approximation and detail coefficients at the different wavelet decomposition levels. Background region characterization is updated along time, and the detection of elements of interest is carried out computing the distance between background region models and those of each incoming image in the sequence. The inclusion of the context in the modeling scheme through each region characterization makes the model robust, being able to support not only gradual illumination and long-term changes, but also sudden illumination changes and the presence of strong shadows in the scen

    Kite Tales

“For me, the joy of kiting lies in that fine sense of extension, in the fact that you have, almost literally, a hand reaching into the sky.” – Wyatt Brummit, author of Kites, 1971 The sight of multiple colourful kites can be breathtaking, and in some of our cultures they can symbolise the connection between the living and loved ones who have passed on. Across ‘KITE TALES’ Giles King and Ciaran Clarke held space and created acts of remembrance, reflection and recreation with kites. Across a series of kite-building workshops — as well as conversations centred around life and death — this project looked to the skies, reimagining death rituals, connecting our kites with memories, the living, and the spirit world through engagement with these who have lost loved ones. This engagement took place via death cafes as well as facilitated, recorded conversations across the kite-building workshops. The project culminated in a celebratory event at Mount Pleasant Ecological Park near Porthtowan. The visual and sound event saw 100’s of kites soaring into the sky above Cornwall, creating a beautiful spectacle of people coming together in celebration of life
