Beth Graham
Beth arrived in 1962 to work as a teacher for the then Methodist mission school at Yirrkala. She was there for three years relying on short-wave radio for outside communication and supplies every two to three months by boat. In 1972 Beth returned to Yirrkala and in 1973 she developed and implemented the school's first bilingual education program. Then she moved to the Curriculum and Assessment Branch of the Northern Territory Department of Education in 1979, working as an education adviser, she became the Territory's first female principal education officer in bilingual education. Beth developed vernacular literacy programs in fourteen different Aboriginal languages across the Northern Territory. She wrote a book titled Wangkami: A Handbook for Aboriginal Teachers involved in Early Child Education which has been reprinted and circulated throughout the Territory. Beth is married to Leigh Graham and they have two daughters and one son she left the Territory in 1988 after twenty-six years as an educator in the north.Educato

Gaining Independence Through Adaptation With Beth Fentress
Beth Fentress graduated from the University of Kansas in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies: Chinese Language and Literature and Speech-language-Hearing. She first studied abroad during the summer of 2015 through Princeton in Beijing, an intensive language-learning program located in Beijing, China. She then spent the 2015-2016 academic year studying Chinese Language at Nanjing University. During her third trip to China in 2017, Beth completed a summer internship at The Essential Learning Group, a therapy center in Shanghai. Beth has also traveled to other cities in China, including Chengdu, Kunming, and Hangzhou.This interview is part of the KU Center for East Asian Studies Study Abroad Impact Interview Series. Beth Fentress discusses her thoughts and advice after spending a total of 14 months studying abroad in China. She answers four questions regarding her study abroad experience.
