Chapter 23. Studies on sleep during the apallic syndrome
No full textThe presence of electroencephalographic and behavioral patterns typical of sleep in unconscious patients was established some time ago (Jouvet et al., 1961; Chatrian et al., 1963; Silverman, 1963; Hess, 1965; Bergamasco et al., 1966a, b; Bricolo, 1966; Cadilhac et al., 1966; Lepetit et al., 1966). There have also been studies on the correlation between the organization of sleep, degree of coma, and anatomic cerebral lesions (French, 1952; Jouvet et al., 1961; Silverman, 1963; Bricolo, 1966; Cadilhac et al., 1966; Lepetit et al., 1966). Finally, it has been suggested that the type of sleep organization might yield useful elements for a prognosis (Bergamasco et al., 1966a, b; Bricolo, 1966). The research carried out by Dolce and Kaemmerer (1966), Gentilomo et al. (1966), Bricolo (1966), Rosadini and Gentilomo (1967) appears particularly important, since they studied the EEG patterns of sleep in a group of comatose patients who were evolving towards the apallic syndrome. These authors reported that they had found all the various phases of physiologic sleep, noticing only a peculiar gradual recovery of each single phase, characterized by the constant delay of desynchronized sleep with REM which always reappears after the complete restructuring of synchronized sleep. These initial observations led to further research on the sleep of comatose patients and in particular in cases of prolonged comas and of apallic syndromes. These studies were undertaken during the past few years by sleep laboratories in Turin, Frankfurt, Genoa, and Verona

No full textThe sundial of Euporus was discovered in 1878 within the
ancient Roman city of Aquileia (Italy), in a quite unusual location at the
centre of the city’s horse race track. Studies have tried to demonstrate
that the sundial had been made for a more southern location than the
one it was found at, although no specific alternative positions have been
suggested. This paper showcases both the workflow designed to fully
digitise it in 3D and analyses on the use of the artefact undertaken from
it. The final 3D reconstruction achieves accuracies of a few millimetres,
thus offering the opportunity to analyse small details of its surface and
to perform non-trivial measurements. We also propose a mathematical
approach to compute the object’s optimal working latitude as well as
the gnomon position and orientation. The algorithm is designed as an
optimization problem where the sundial’s inscriptions and the Sun positions during daytime are considered to obtain the optimal configuration.
The complete 3D model of the object is used to get all the geometrical
information needed to validate the results of computations

A 6-DOF haptic manipulation system to verify assembly procedures on CAD models
No full textDuring the design phase of products and before going into production, it is necessary to verify the presence of mechanical plays, tolerances, and encumbrances on production mockups. This work introduces a multimodal system that allows verifying assembly procedures of products in Virtual Reality starting directly from CAD models. Thus leveraging the costs and speeding up the assessment phase in product design. For this purpose, the design of a novel 6-DOF Haptic device is presented. The achieved performance of the system has been validated in a demonstration scenario employing state-of-the-art volumetric rendering of interaction forces together with a stereoscopic visualization setup
