Neutrino energy reconstruction in disappearance experiments with calorimetric and kinematic methods
Modern experiments aimed at measuring neutrino oscillation parameters have entered the age of precision. The determination of these parameters strongly depends on the ability to reconstruct the energy of the neutrinos. We compare two different energy reconstruction techniques: the reconstruction based on the kinematics of the outgoing lepton and the one based the calorimetric method
Missing energy and the measurement of the CP -violating phase in neutrino oscillations
In the next generation of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments aiming to determine the charge-parity-violating phase δCP in the appearance channel, fine-grained time-projection chambers are expected to play an important role. In this paper, we analyze an influence of realistic detector capabilities on the δCP sensitivity for a setup similar to that of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. We find that the effect of the missing energy carried out by undetected particles is sizable. Although the reconstructed neutrino energy can be corrected for the missing energy, the accuracy of such procedure has to exceed 20%, to avoid a sizable bias in the extracted δCP value
Comparison of the calorimetric and kinematic methods of neutrino energy reconstruction in disappearance experiments
To be able to achieve their physics goals, future neutrino-oscillation experiments will need to reconstruct the neutrino energy with very high accuracy. In this work, we analyze how the energy reconstruction may be affected by realistic detection capabilities, such as energy resolutions, efficiencies, and thresholds. This allows us to estimate how well the detector performance needs to be determined a priori in order to avoid a sizable bias in the measurement of the relevant oscillation parameters. We compare the kinematic and calorimetric methods of energy reconstruction in the context of two νμ→νμ disappearance experiments operating in different energy regimes. For the calorimetric reconstruction method, we find that the detector performance has to be estimated with an O(10%) accuracy to avoid a significant bias in the extracted oscillation parameters. On the other hand, in the case of kinematic energy reconstruction, we observe that the results exhibit less sensitivity to an overestimation of the detector capabilities
Estimate of the theoretical uncertainty of the cross sections for nucleon knockout in neutral-current neutrino-oxygen interactions
Free nucleons propagating in water are known to produce. rays, which form a background to the searches for diffuse supernova neutrinos and sterile neutrinos carried out with Cherenkov detectors. As a consequence, the process of nucleon knockout induced by neutral-current quasielastic interactions of atmospheric (anti) neutrinos with oxygen needs to be under control at the quantitative level in the background simulations of ongoing and future experiments. In this paper, we provide a quantitative assessment of the uncertainty associated with the theoretical description of the nuclear cross sections, estimating it from the discrepancies between the predictions of different models
Occupational Health and Safety aspects in chemical and ecological rescue trainings
W artykule podjęto zagadnienie organizacji i prowadzenia zajęć praktycznych podczas szkoleń z zakresu ratownictwa chemicznego organizowanych dla strażaków Państwowej Straży Pożarnej. The paper presents the issues of the organization and practical classes conduction in chemical trainings organized for firefighters by the State Fire Service. The implementation of training curriculum and organization of certain practical classes requires from the teacher not only the observation of the general OHS rules but also the proper preparation of training stands as well as the supervising the safe usage of the equipment. This enables the education of the right skills and habits among the students of specialist trainings that are found to be necessary in chemical and ecological rescue operations
The essence of directing a rescue operation in view of the applicable binding legal status
W artykule przedstawiono zarys stanu prawnego, który precyzuje kwestie organizacji akcji i działań ratowniczych, usytuowania prawnego osób wstępujących w funkcję kierującego akcją ratowniczą (KAR) lub innym działaniem ratowniczym (KDR), ukazując obszary wymagające doprecyzowania i uszczegółowienia w celu zapewnienia oczekiwanej jakości realizowanych zadań. Wskazano również sposób precyzowania okresu pełnienia funkcji kierującego działaniem ratowniczym w danym zdarzeniu, ukazując różnicę stanu prawnego pomiędzy dowódcą danego pododdziału a kierującym konkretnym działaniem ratowniczym. Autorzy ukazali miejsca potencjalnego wystąpienia zwiększonego ryzyka decyzyjnego kierujących akcją lub innym działaniem ratowniczym, wynikające z niedookreślonych obszarów regulacji prawnych w rozpatrywanym zakresie, ukazując jednocześnie możliwości wdrożenia rozwiązań dla poszczególnych sytuacji. The material presents an outline of the applicable legal status intended to help clarify issues related to organisation of rescue actions and activities, legal position of persons acting as commanders of a rescue action or other types of rescue actions, pointing to areas that require clarification and detailing in order to ensure the expected quality of tasks performed. The way of specifying the period of performing the function of a commander of rescue action in a given incident has also been indicated, showing the difference in legal status between the commander of a given subdivision and the commander of a given rescue action. The authors have identified places of potential occurrence of an increased decision-making risk for persons in charge of an action or other types of rescue activities which could arise from insufficient definition of certain areas of legal regulations in the field under consideration, showing at the same time possibilities of implementing solutions for particular situations
Emergency management during hazardous traffic incidents participation of fire protection units (FPUs) in criminal proceedings conducted by the authorities after completion of a rescue operation
Every day a number of dangerous road traffic incidents take place on a national scale that require the intervention of emergency services and entities. The major part of this type of interventions entails the cooperation between Fire Protection Units (FPU), the Police and the Emergency Medical Service (EMS). The organisation of operations and their nature depends on several factors including the mechanism of the incident itself, the location of the incident, the type and number of vehicles involved in the hazardous incident, as well as the number of occupants, their state of health and a number of other derivatives resulting from the occurrence of the incident in question. The article will show the circumstances of the implementation of tasks by the FPU in the cases in question and will present the issue of the participation of the FPU in criminal proceedings conducted after the completion of the rescue activity. Particular emphasis will be placed on the presentation of the competences of the functionaries representing the FPO both in the course of exercising of the authoritative role within the framework of a given rescue activity and in the course of fulfilling of auxiliary tasks in relation to bodies that carry out criminal investigation proceedings
APPROXIMATIONS OF THE SPECTRAL FUNCTION∗
The ICARUS and future liquid argon neutrino experiments generate demand for evaluating the spectral function of argon. In this paper we use oxygen nucleus as a testing ground for our phenomenological approach to the spectral function and probe the influence of momentum distribution and treatment of the mean field spectral function on the differential cross sections. The obtained model reproduces very well results of the exact spectral function of oxygen and can be applied to heavier nuclei, such as calcium or argon. PACS numbers: 13.15.+g, 25.30.Pt 1. Motivatio
