Understanding political violence: a criminological analysis

    No full text
Understanding Political Violence introduces political violence in the context of sociological and criminological debates. The author distinguishes between political violence from below, for example collective violence, insurgency, armed struggle and terrorism; and political violence from above, which includes indiscriminate repression, institutional and state violence, torture and war. Vincenzo Ruggiero discusses and critiques the contribution of criminological theory to understanding political violence. He draws on stimulating case studies to illustrate the theory, including interviews with former members of the Red Army Faction in Germany and the Brigate Rosse in Italy. The concluding chapter examines the recent development of a criminology of war and calls for a general ceasefire and the criminalisation of war, the most extreme form of institutional violence. This is essential reading for students and researchers in criminology, political studies, sociology, and war and conflict studies. This book, published in 2006, is now available in Italian and a Spanish and a Russian edition will soon be available

Dickens a Downton.

    No full text

The New York Times lo calificó de "violinista espectacular".

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH DIGITAL INNOVATION AND SMALL-SCALE ARCHITECTURE

The housing crisis that typically results from a disaster is typically addressed through “temporary” prefabricated housing. These structures are usually designed for a short to medium-term lifespan and are often arranged in dormitory-style suburbs that lack basic facilities. When the rebuilding process extends over time, as in many cases, these settlements can lead to a “second emergency” with serious repercussions for community health and cohesion (Ruggiero et al., 2021). To tackle this issue, some international initiatives have experimented with digital technologies and lightweight building systems and local unskilled labour to create innovative temporary constructions. Notably, the work of Hiroto Kobayashi in the Far East and his “veneer building system” stands out among these studies. Italy is a seismic country where the “reconstruction” process has historically been contentious, often requiring people to remain in temporary settlements for extended periods. A recent example is the aftermath of the Central Italy earthquake in 016/2017. Eight years later, only a small percentage of uninhabitable houses have been rebuilt or restored. Some individuals continue to live in provisional settlements, while others have relocated, all facing an uncertain future. This chapter introduces a methodology for establishing temporary settlements through participatory construction processes for small facilities. This methodology was implemented in a pilot project carried out in collaboration between the Italian University of Camerino and the Japanese Keio University. Two innovative “mobile” pavilions for cultural activities were constructed in Amandola, one of the villages severely affected by the 2016/2017 earthquake. Local students were involved in the project, digital technologies were applied, and the veneer system was tested. This work represents a unique application of digital technologies in the disaster-impacted area of Central Italy, as well as an original implementation of the veneer syste

Inexact Bregman iteration with an application to Poisson data reconstruction

This work deals with the solution of image restoration problems by an iterative regularization method based on the Bregman iteration. Any iteration of this scheme requires to exactly compute the minimizer of a function. However, in some image reconstruction applications, it is either impossible or extremely expensive to obtain exact solutions of these subproblems. In this paper, we propose an inexact version of the iterative procedure, where the inexactness in the inner subproblem solution is controlled by a criterion that preserves the convergence of the Bregman iteration and its features in image restoration problems. In particular, the method allows to obtain accurate reconstructions also when only an overestimation of the regularization parameter is known. The introduction of the inexactness in the iterative scheme allows to address image reconstruction problems from data corrupted by Poisson noise, exploiting the recent advances about specialized algorithms for the numerical minimization of the generalized Kullback–Leibler divergence combined with a regularization term. The results of several numerical experiments enable to evaluat

Spazi metropolitani e mondi allo specchio in ”Pattern Recognition”

ENG / The mirror is the material site of a phenomenon of simultaneous representation and negation, a dis-placement of a reflection which seems to open up a space that at the same time quotes, reverts and negates our own. The novel "Pattern Recognition" (2003) by William Gibson illustrates how globalization homogenizes cultural differences and underlines the global ubiquity of Western or American culture. As the protagonist travels from one metropolis to another, she sees the patterns of culture emerge in different ways through architecture, design, and the behaviour of people. Distant cities are seen by her as mirror-worlds, reflections of her home in America that are the same, yet different. According to Gibson, however, the mirror-world which enables us to situate ourselves in contrast to other cultures, is disappearing due to the «spectral hand» of global marketing
