Molecular and solid-state (8-hydroxy-quinoline)aluminum interaction with magnesium: A first-principles study

    No full text
The interaction between Mg and (8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum, Alq(3), is investigated via ab initio molecular dynamics based on density-functional theory. We model the Alq(3) thin film both with a single Alq(3) molecule in vacuo (as is usually done in the literature) and with an Alq(3) crystalline structure. Comparing the results from these two models, we show that bulk calculations provide a better description of the chemical processes involved, allowing the Mg atom to react with two neighboring Alq(3) molecules, as was alluded to in a previous publication [S. Meloni, A. Palma, A. Kahn, J. Schwartz, and R. Car, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 125, 7808 (2003)]. Moreover, core-level shift calculations are in good agreement with experimental measurements only when using the solid phase approach. We also propose a different interpretation of the Al(2p) experimental core level presented in a previous work [C. Shen, A. Kahn, and J. Schwartz, J. Appl. Phys. 89, 449 (2001)]

An Overview of the Schwartz Theory of Basic Values

    No full text
This article presents an overview of the Schwartz theory of basic human values. It discusses the nature of values and spells out the features that are common to all values and what distinguishes one value from another. The theory identifies ten basic personal values that are recognized across cultures and explains where they come from. At the heart of the theory is the idea that values form a circular structure that reflects the motivations each value expresses. This circular structure, that captures the conflicts and compatibility among the ten values is apparently culturally universal. The article elucidates the psychological principles that give rise to it. Next, it presents the two major methods developed to measure the basic values, the Schwartz Value Survey and the Portrait Values Questionnaire. Findings from 82 countries, based on these and other methods, provide evidence for the validity of the theory across cultures. The findings reveal substantial differences in the value priorities of individuals. Surprisingly, however, the average value priorities of most societal groups exhibit a similar hierarchical order whose existence the article explains. The last section of the article clarifies how values differ from other concepts used to explain behavior—attitudes, beliefs, norms, and traits

As an undergraduate, he became involved with the OSU student group, the Free Speech Front (FSF), because of his earlier involvement in the civil rights movement in Louisiana. He was a participant and important contributor to the Free Speech Front's goal of eradicating the University's restriction on campus speakers, known as the Speakers Rule. One strategy was for Schwartz and others in the FSF to participate in two sit-ins in the Administration Building to influence University officials to change the rule. A later strategy was to invite noted Marxist historian Herbert Aptheker to campus to not speak, but instead have students read his work as he stood by. Several months after that event in 1965, the OSU Board of Trustees effectively abolished the rule. Schwartz also discusses how his involvement in the free-speech movement influenced his later career as a lawyer and organizational-effectiveness coach and consultant

Transcript, 55 pp. Audio file available at http://purl.umn.edu/95577Schwartz worked for the Rand Corporation on various defense related projects: SAGE and JOHNNIAC in particular. When Rand organized the System Development Corporation, Schwartz went to the new company. For most of the interview, Schwartz describes his association with SAGE, his part in the computer laboratory work on timesharing for the AN/FSQ-32 computer, computer networks, control system projects (such as TDMS), and his interactions with ARPA personnel, including J. C. R. Licklider, Lawrence G. Roberts, and Robert S. Taylor. He discusses his later position at Computer Sciences Corporation. This interview was recorded as part of a research project on the influence of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on the development of computer science in the United States.Schwartz, Jules I..
