Preliminary findings from a survey on the MD state of the practice
No full textIn the context of an Italian research project, this paper reports on an on-line survey, performed with 155 software professionals, with the aim of investigating about their opinions and experiences in modeling during software development and Model-driven engineering usage. The survey focused also on used modeling languages, processes and tools. A preliminary analysis of the results confirmed that Model-driven engineering, and more in general software modeling, are very relevant phenomena. Approximately 68% of the sample use models during software development. Among then, 44% generate code starting from models and 16% execute them directly. Six reasons for rejecting an industrial survey paper
No full textContext: Despite their importance in any empirically based research program, industrial surveys are not very common in the software engineering literature. In our experience, a possible reason is their difficulty of publication. Goal: We would like to understand what are the issues that may prevent the publication of papers reporting industrial surveys. Method: In this preliminary work, we analyzed the surveys we conducted and extracted the main lessons learned in terms of issues and problems. Results: Most common critics posed to industrial surveys are: lack of novelty, limitation of the geographic scope and sampling issues. Conclusions: Most objections that led to reject a survey paper actually are not easy to overcome and others are not so serious. These objections could restrain researchers from conducting this type of studies that represent an important methodological asset. No full textCon la pubblicazione del presente volume si pone finalmente rimedio a una lacuna della storiografia artistica e dell’editoria non solo italiana che da troppo tempo attendeva di essere colmata. La sua ambizione è infatti quella di offrirci una storia dell’arte giapponese, cioè molto più di un repertorio, per quanto completo e articolato, di nomi e dati cronologici relativi al suo poco conosciuto (specialmente in Italia) ambito di riferimento. Lo sforzo dell’autore di abbattere definitivamente gli ostacoli che si frappongono ad una adeguata comprensione dell’arte giapponese, lungi dal fondarsi sulla ricerca di presunte e ineffabili matrici “orientali” del suo oggetto di studio per affrontarlo in una sfera di intangibile autonomia metodologica, trova al contrario il suo punto d’appoggio proprio nella grande eredità degli studi storico-artistici fioriti in Europa centrale a cavallo degli ultimi due secoli, ed in particolare nella lezione wölffliniana di una stilgeschichte declinata sull’orizzonte transtorico e transgeografico di categorie formali universali. Ecco allora succedersi, nella storia dell’arte giapponese delineata da Tanaka entro i campi cronologici intenzionalmente sfalsati rispetto alle omologhe periodizzazioni occidentali, una fase iniziale “arcaica” del periodo Asuka, seguita da quella “classica”del periodo Nara, cui fa seguito la fase “manierista” del medio periodo Heian, e poi ancora il “barocco” del periodo Kamakura, fino al “romanticismo” di età Muromachi e Momoyama e al “giapponismo” del periodo Edo. Questa articolata impostazione storiografica spiega anche l’ampio spazio che l’autore dedica in premessa alle questioni metodologiche che vi si trovano implicate, anch’esse rivelatrici di uno sforzo interpretativo che distacca notevolmente questo lavoro da quello di altri storici dell’arte giapponesi

Relevance, benefits, and problems of software modelling and model driven techniques—A survey in the Italian industry
No full textContext Claimed benefits of software modelling and model driven techniques are improvements in productivity, portability, maintainability and interoperability. However, little effort has been devoted at collecting evidence to evaluate their actual relevance, benefits and usage complications. Goal The main goals of this paper are: (1) assess the diffusion and relevance of software modelling and MD techniques in the Italian industry, (2) understand the expected and achieved benefits, and (3) identify which problems limit/prevent their diffusion. Method We conducted an exploratory personal opinion survey with a sample of 155 Italian software professionals by means of a Web-based questionnaire on-line from February to April 2011. Results Software modelling and MD techniques are very relevant in the Italian industry. The adoption of simple modelling brings common benefits (better design support, documentation improvement, better maintenance, and higher software quality), while MD techniques make it easier to achieve: improved standardization, higher productivity, and platform independence. We identified problems, some hindering adoption (too much effort required and limited usefulness) others preventing it (lack of competencies and supporting tools). Conclusions The relevance represents an important objective motivation for researchers in this area. The relationship between techniques and attainable benefits represents an instrument for practitioners planning the adoption of such techniques. No full textIl Convegno Internazionale Sguardi sulle città in trasformazione, che ha avuto luogo il 7 aprile 2011 presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, costituisce una delle molteplici iniziative a carattere scientifico e culturale intraprese dal Laboratorio di Ricerca sulle Città negli ultimi anni. L’ideazione del tema è maturata all’interno di un lavoro di ricerca che si propone l’obiettivo di raccogliere il contributo di studiosi di diverse discipline e di diversi paesi per disegnare un panorama delle città e delle sue trasformazioni il più possibile composito e articolato. Complessivamente, in questa giornata di studi, senza avanzare la pretesa di aver esaurito un tema tanto vasto, si è svolto un attento esame di alcune significative realtà urbane, individuandone non solo le caratteristiche storiche, urbanistiche e architettoniche, ma anche le implicazioni sociologiche, letterarie e filosofiche. La sinergia dei contributi ha dato luogo a un dibattito molto ricco che ha coperto un ampio ventaglio di prospettive, spaziando dall’Estremo Oriente all’Europa, fino al Brasile, passando per l’India, Singapore, Dubai, Istanbul, Toronto e New York.
