It concerns the multilingualism of writers of various nationalities in exile, the unreformability
of Putin’s Russia and the extent of the influence of Polish culture on the work of
Bykov himself. An important fragment of the interview concerns Russian writers who were
in German captivity during the Second World War (Vitaly Siomin, Konstanin Vorobev)
and the shocking documentary story Elzhunia by Irina Iroshnikowa about a Polish girl
murdered by a German soldier, with such a shocking motto: “Once upon a time there was
Elżunia, she was dying herself / Because her father in Auschwitz / Mom at Majdanek”
K.M. Bykov and transfer between the hemispheres
No full textExperiments in the laboratory of Roger Sperry showed that section of the corpus callosum blocks the normally strong transfer of information between the two hemispheres of the brain. In some of the papers from Sperry's lab, work by Bykov in Pavlov's lab was cited, since he appeared to have found similar results earlier. At the time, the only source on Bykov's experiment that was easily available was an abstract in a German journal. Although Bykov was the author of the paper, he did not write the abstract. The author of the abstract was Mark Serejski. Recently we obtained a copy of Bykov's original article in Russian, and arranged for it to be translated into English. The full article makes it clear that the abstract was somewhat misleading both in the methods and the results of Bykov's study. Here we present an English translations of Bykov's paper and the Serejski abstract, along with comments on the discrepancies between the two
Dense heteroclinic tangencies near a Bykov cycle
No full textThis article presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two nodes - we say that the nodes have different chirality. We show that in the set of vector fields defined on a three-dimensional manifold, there is a class where tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci occur densely. The class is defined by the presence of the Bykov cycle, and by a condition on the parameters that determine the linear part of the vector field at the equilibria. This has important consequences: the global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by Newhouse phenomena, coexisting with hyperbolic dynamics arising from transversality. The coexistence gives rise to linked suspensions of Cantor sets, with hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics, in contrast with the case where the nodes have the same chirality. We illustrate our theory with an explicit example where tangencies arise in the unfolding of a symmetric vector field on the three-dimensional sphere

No full textAo falarmos de literatura russa contemporânea adentramos em um universo ainda pouco explorado no Brasil. Em relação aos autores mais recentes, pouquíssimos foram traduzidos, publicados ou comentados em português. Dmítri Bykov é um desses autores russos contemporâneos inéditos nas pesquisas brasileiras. Bastante múltiplo, é considerado por críticos como pós-modernista mainstream. Este artigo busca, então, ao apresentá-lo e expor algumas características da obra Contos de ferrovias (ЖД-Рассказы, 2007), investigar quais mecanismos e teorias de tradução podem levar o leitor brasileiro à compreensão não só do texto literário em si, mas do intertexto imanente e contexto da Rússia atual.When we speak of contemporary Russian literature, we enter in a still little explored universe in Brazil. Regarding more recent authors, very few have been translated, published or commented in Brazilian Portuguese. In Brazilian research, Dmitry Bykov is one of those unpublished contemporary Russian authors. Quite multiple, the author is considered by critics as a mainstream postmodernist author. This article aims, therefore, at presenting him and explaining certain characteristics of the work ЖД-Рассказы (2007), to investigate which mechanisms and translation theories can lead Brazilian readers to understand not only the literary text itself, but the immanent intertext and context of the current Russia
Square Waves and Bykov T-Points in a Delay Algebraic Model for the Kerr--Gires--Tournois Interferometer
No full textWe study theoretically the mechanisms of square wave formation of a vertically emitting micro-cavity operated in the Gires-Tournois regime that contains a Kerr medium and that is subjected to strong time-delayed optical feedback and detuned optical injection. We show that in the limit of large delay, square wave solutions of the time-delayed system can be treated as relative homoclinic solutions of an equation with an advanced argument. Based on this, we use concepts of classical homoclinic bifurcation theory to study different types of square wave solutions. In particular, we unveil the mechanisms behind the collapsed snaking scenario of square waves and explain the formation of complex-shaped multistable square wave solutions through a Bykov T-point. Finally we relate the position of the T-point to the position of the Maxwell point in the original time-delayed system
Railways stories by Dmitry Bykov: a descriptive study about translation and intertext
No full textEste trabalho apresenta a tradução direta do russo e inédita no Brasil de quatro contos selecionados de Contos de ferrovias (JD-rasskazy), do autor russo contemporâneo Dmítri Býkov. Nele, Almôndegas \"tolstoístas\", Assassinato no expresso do Oriente, O condutor e Instruções são tratados sob o ponto de vista dos estudos descritivos da tradução em uma tentativa de dissecar os procedimentos e dificuldades do ato tradutório. Além disso, como desdobramento do comentário acerca da tradução, há uma análise dos mecanismos intertextuais e os efeitos destes no estilo autoral baseada na semiótica da cultura de Iúri Lótman. Por fim, a última parte desta dissertação analisa o modo como Dmítri Býkov usa o tema da ferrovia, a um só tempo acompanhando e transfigurando a tradição literária de seu país.This dissertation presents in Brazil the unprecedent translation, direct from Russian, of four selected stories of Railways stories (JD-rasskazy), by the contemporary russian author Dmitry Bykov. In this work, Almôndegas tolstoístas, Assassinato no expresso do Oriente, O condutor e Instruções are treated from the point of Descriptive Translation Studies in an attempt to analyse the translation acts procedures and difficulties. In addition, as an unfolding commentary on translation, there is an analysis of intertextual mechanisms and its effects on authors style, based on Yuri Lotman and his semiotic of culture. Finally, the last part of this dissertation explains the way Dmitry Bykov uses the railway theme, at the same time acompanying and transfiguring the literary tradition of his country

No full textAn interview with a very famous Russian writer of the middle generation, Dmitry Bykov (born in 1967), recorded in Krosno in the Subcarpathian region in mid-May 2014, concerns the situation in Russia and in Eastern and Central Europe shortly after the annexation of Ukrainian Crimea by Putin’s Russia. Dmitry Bykov is strongly against this aggression, seeing it as the source of many future misfortunes for Russia, but at the same time he sees the disastrous dimension of contemporary Ukrainian politics, also – in his opinion – too nationalist. When it comes to the assessment of President Putin who functions to this day, Bykov considers him a very mediocre manager, and generally – a man without qualities, predicting his imminent collapse and retirement in some foreign country. The most interesting fragments of the conversation, however, are not those in which the writer’s, of course, unfulfilled predictions were formulated, but those about the past and present fate of Russia, which at the beginning of the 21st century again turned out to be hostile to democracy and good relations with its closer and more distant neighbours. Bykov sees in this peculiar Russian “laws of historical development,” but his vision of the future history of Russia is far from fatal and we can even call it moderately optimistic

No full textThe EC- (European Commission) EURATOM TACIS project 30303 aims at safety evaluation of VVER-1000 (Russian Design, Gidropress, pressurized water reactor) and of RBMK (Russian design, NIKIET, boiling water cooled, graphite moderated nuclear reactor). Safety improvements for those reactors are also expected from the project. About 50 scientists of various nationalities (primarily Russian and Italian) contributed to the project for around 5 years. A variety of experimental and computational activities was performed. Several hundred reports were issued within a suited Quality Assurance (QA) framework and many scientists contributed to each report (only responsible authors identified here).
The present document constitutes the Quick Look Report for the experiment ‘Test 15’, relevant to Accident Management in VVER-1000 NPP performed in the PSB experimental simulator in Elektrogorsk
