Alisa, Alice' is a humanely cruel and deeply moving drama, full of passion and desire. The clash of two cultures - two worlds - is described with psychological accuracy and depth. Alisa, a young Muslim refugee scarred by the Balkan war finds shelter with Magda, a representative of the common so-called civilised but self-destructive and self-loving western world. Magda, through the sadism arising from her despair and loss of purpose, her psychological confusion, causes the suicide of Alisa. Their relationship permeated as much with love as with hatred, is decanted through the dictatorship of language into a miraculous, irrational and mysterious atmosphere. In places, the style of the play is reminiscent of Pinter's comedy of menace. The realistically based dramatic events are firmly grounded in a recognisable and actual contemporaneity. Poetic ambiguity facilitates universal interpretation, and here and there extends to the magical and surreal.Front Cover -- Preliminary Pages -- Author's Preface -- Alisa, Alice -- Translator's Afterword -- Endnotes -- Back CoverAlisa, Alice' is a humanely cruel and deeply moving drama, full of passion and desire. Collaboration between a Plum tree and Alisa Tarabrina. Contact microphone performance mixed with ambience from the Lower Lonsdale Community Garden. Scratching, plucking, resonating through the bark.Created for MDIA300/VAST320 - Sound, Media, Ecology under professor Julie Andreyev. Collaborative performances between students and trees using contact microphones and touch gestures. This project sought to expand the performer's awareness of a nonhuman actor, their chosen tree. Beginning with a Tree Awareness meditation, the performers then experimented with touch gestures, actively listening to the tree's response and acoustic characteristics. These gestures were then brought together into an improvisational performance, in concert with the tree, the performer, and other nonhuman agents such as birds or wind.</p

Alisa Zelnicek, fourth-generation owner of the Claude Curry Farm established in 1889, discussed the history of the land and the family that claimed it. The original 160 acres produced wheat and cattle. At the time of the interview wheat continued to be grown on the land that has been cared for by several generations of the family. Alisa's parents set up a trust that ensured a member of the family would care for the farm for the next one hundred years. In addition to the history of the land, Alisa shared cherished memories of growing up on the farm with her beloved parents and grandparents. The Oklahoma Centennial Farm Families Collection is comprised of interviews with farm owners and operators whose families have been involved in the farming and/or ranching business in Oklahoma for 100 years or more with properties designated an Oklahoma Centennial Farm or Ranch through the Oklahoma Historical Society

A “very decent nick”: ethical treatment in prison-based democratic therapeutic communities

    No full text
The penal system of England and Wales has been greatly influenced in the past two decades by the emergence of a moral framework or ‘decency agenda’. What decency means to prisoners and how decency can be embodied into daily prison life, however, remains underexplored. Drawing from her original research in prison-based democratic therapeutic communities (TCs), the author argues that decency is experienced in TCs through an ethic of care and an ethos of change. TC residents benefit from atypical institutional practices which encourage the formation of supportive relationships with prison staff and facilitate meaningful opportunities for personal change

Prisoners’ motivations for therapeutic community treatment: in search of a “different” approach to offender rehabilitation

    No full text
Offenders' motivations to undertake rehabilitative programmes are underexplored. Drawing upon semi-ethnographic research, this article considers the reasons why prisoners apply to join a democratic therapeutic community. It identifies a typology of motivation to participate, and determines that most applicants are seeking an alternative to the rehabilitative hegemony of structured, manualized, cognitive-behavioural interventions. The findings have important implications for correctional staff, and in particular, offender managers, who are best placed to identify and encourage suitable offenders to apply for administration
