The Index Selection Problem with Configurations and Memory Limitation: A Scatter Search approach
No full textWithin the physical designing process of relational databases, the Index Selection Problem aims at finding the subset of indexes to build for accessing the stored information. More precisely, given a database workload, each query must be served by at most one predefined set of indexes (named configuration) to maximize the net gain in terms of time. This gain is made up of the time gain obtained to serve the queries through the configurations minus the fixed time needed to create and maintain those configurations.
The clustering of indexes into configurations and the limited amount of memory available to store the indexes characterize our variant of the problem. At the same time, established approaches in the literature have only considered those two aspects separately.
We model this setting as a generalization of the Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem with budget constraint and propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation for it. Then, to find near-optimal solutions in a reasonable computational time, we develop a Scatter Search meta-heuristic exploiting the specific facility location features of the problem. We test our algorithm over a broad set of benchmark instances and compare it with an exact solver and an efficient state-of-the-art heuristic method

Hyphenated Americans’ Experiences in Multicultural Interactions Portrayed in American Fictions
No full textAmerican society cannot be detached from the society’s multiculturalism. The various ethnic groups inevitably may lead into cooperations, frictions, or conflicts in their interaction. Fiction, as one of literary works, is one of the ways in picturing its reality. Most of hyphenated-American writers wrote both their experiences and imagination through fictions which mostly are about those of racial-based. Some fictions such as Sui Sin Far’s In the Land of the Free, Bienvenido Santos’ Immigration Blues, Anzia Yezierska’s Soap and Water depict the unfavorable experiences in their first interaction in America. While, Monfoon Leong’s New Year for Fong Wing and Gish Jen’s In the American Society elaborate the inter-race interaction and their confusion in blending their identity in the new land. It is found that though they can stand living in a multicultural society, most hyphenated Americans still face situation where sometimes they are still regarded as the subordinated class and it leads into fear and uncomfortable life. Racism is still big issue in American life even though it has long been declared that all men are created equal. In the interaction process some of them still had a tight tie to their origins, while others could easily conform to the American culture.

The effect of audit firm merger on market reaction: The case of Hanafiah Raslan Mohamad clients
No full textThe scholars in auditing clearly agreed in consensus that the larger the audit firms the higher the quality of the auditors. The quality stems from the quality works that the Big Four will provide to their clients and subsequently will affect to the wealth of their clients. However, prior empirical studies did not investigate the quality of a new merged audit firm, which assumed as a higher quality of auditor than before merging using the market reaction, despite the widespread empirical evidence of the investors’ reaction towards the downgraded auditors’ quality. This study investigates the effect on stock prices of Hanafiah Raslan Mohamad (formerly merged with Arthur Andersen) clients surrounding the merger announcement event between Hanafiah Raslan Mohamad (HRM) and Ernst and Young (E&Y). The results provide empirical evidences that the merger announcement had a positive effect on market prices of HRM clients. This study provides insight as to auditing literature about the effect of large audit firm reputation on clients’ share prices
