Ytterbium-doped tantalum pentoxide waveguide lasers
We have demonstrated a Yb:Ta2O5 waveguide laser fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering on oxidised silicon. The waveguide laser was end-pumped with a laser diode at 977 nm and lasing was observed between 1015 and 1020 nm. The launched pump power threshold and slope efficiency were measured to be ~25 mW and 1.78 %, respectively

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Cure Kinetics and Rheology Models for ICI Fiberite 977-3 and 977-2 Thermosetting Resins
Heat of reaction, degree of cure, and viscosity of ICI Fiberite 977-2 and 977-3 thermosetting resins were measured. Degree of cure and viscosity for Fiberite 977-2 and 977-3 resins was determined under isothermal and adiabatic conditions. Expressions relating the degree of cure and viscosity to the time temperature profile during processing were found for each resin. Typically, these relationships are determined by conducting isothermal tests at several temperatures. A new approach which employs adiabatic data is proposed. A comparison of the isothermal and adiabatic based models is presented for both cure and viscosity data. The adiabatic based models require fewer test runs to develop the model parameters, yet accurately predict resin cure and viscosity characteristics. </jats:p
Stereoselective Total Synthesis of the Potent Anti-Asthmatic Compound CMI-977 (LDP-977)
Neste trabalho, uma síntese curta e eficiente para o CMI-977 (LDP-977), um potente agente antiasmático oralmente ativo, é descrita. As etapas chave envolveram uma ciclização oxidativa de Mukaiyama, fornecendo a unidade trans-THF (tetrahidrofurano) e uma reação de homologação de Seyferth-Gilbert para construção da tripla ligação da molécula alvo. A síntese do bloco de construção chiral chave foi realizada a partir do emprego da resolução cinética hidrolítica de Jacobsen. A short and efficient stereoselective total synthesis of CMI-977 (LDP-977), a potent and orally active anti-asthmatic compound, was developed. The key steps involve a highly diastereoselective Mukaiyama oxidative cyclization, which provides the trans-THF (tetrahydrofuran) unit and a Seyferth-Gilbert homologation to construct the triple bond in the target molecule. The synthesis of the key chiral building block was performed using Jacobsen hydrolytic kinetic resolution
