Evaluation of Bacteriostatic Effect of Rosemary and Oregano Essential Oils Against a Non-Pathogenic Surrogate of Salmonella spp. (E. coli ATCC 9637)
No full textControl of bacterial growth in food is essential to maintaining food quality and safety. The use of food additives is one answer raised to address this problem. However, some synthetic antimicrobial additives pose minor to serious health risks to consumers. Natural antimicrobial additives are potential alternatives to synthetic additives that can control microbial growth without significant health risks. This study evaluated the bacteriostatic effect of rosemary essential oil (REO) and oregano essential oil (OEO) against E. coli ATCC 9637, a non-pathogenic surrogate of Salmonella spp. in culture and in raw chicken breast. Final concentrations of 1.5% REO and 0.15% OEO were added to cultures of E. coli ATCC 9637, and the growth rate was evaluated. Raw chicken breast pieces were dipped in E. coli ATCC 9637 cultures prior to being dipped in 1.5% REO and 0.15% OEO. The chicken samples were then taken at two-day intervals, and the growth of E. coli ATCC 9637 was analyzed. No growth was observed in the cultures after a 24 h incubation period. The chicken samples treated with 1.5% REO resulted in a 0.69 log reduction compared to the positive control, while those treated with 0.15% OEO resulted in a 0.31 log reduction (p < 0.05). This shows that REO and OEO are effective against E. coli ATCC 9637 and have promise as natural antimicrobial agents
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textThis proceedings volume includes papers presented during the conference on Remote Sensing for Agriculture, Ecosystems, and Hydrology. The conference was part of the International Symposium on Remote Sensing sponsored by SPIE. The symposium was held at the Centre de Congrès Pierre Baudis, Toulouse, France, 21- 24 September 2015.
The conference is dedicated to providing rapid dissemination of scientific and technical information, and attracts scientists and professionals from throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Approximately 34 oral and 25 poster presentations were given this year, covering a broad range of topics in the field of remote sensing applications in environmental science.
The program was organized according to major themes, with 10 sessions on agriculture: natural resources monitoring; hyperspectral, spectroscopy and fluorescence; UAV and high spatial resolution imagery; image classification; agricultural applications; evaportranspiration and energy balance (covered in two sessions); hydrology and irrigation; vegetation and carbon monitoring; vegetation modelling; and snow and ice hydrology.
The poster presentations also followed the above-mentioned themes, discussing both fundamental and applications-based research activities, including modelling, laboratory and field experiments, and operational applications.
We extend our gratitude to Dr. Alasdair Mac Arthur (NERC/NCEO Field Spectroscopy Facility, GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom) for giving the invited presentation, A critique of field spectroscopy and the challenges and opportunities it presents for remote sensing for agriculture, ecosystems, and hydrology; and Dr. Rasmus M. Houborg (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia) for giving the invited presentation, Application of a regularized model inversion system (REGFLEC) to multi-temporal RapidEye imagery for retrieving vegetation characteristics. Our appreciation and gratitude goes also to the presenters for their efforts and to the participants for their insightful questions and discussions. Special thanks are also due to the host city for the excellent venue and to all of the SPIE organizational staff for their support prior to, during, and after the symposium. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
