The effect of Corexit-9527 on retinoid-induced Hoxa1 gene expression in P19 cells.

No full text
(A) Corexit-9527 inhibited ROH-induced Hoxa1 expression. P19 cells were exposed to the indicated concentrations of Corexit-9527 for 1 or 24 hr followed by 0.3 μM ROH for additional 6 hr. The columns represent the relative Hoxa1 expression levels (left axis) that are normalized to the control (no ROH induction). The bars show cell viability (right axis) at the tested doses of Corexit. Values are mean ± s.e.m.; n = 3. (B) The effect of Corexit-9527 on ROH-, RAL- or RA-induced Hoxa1 expression. P19 cells were exposed to Corexit-9527 for 1 hr and then were induced by indicated retinoids for additional 6 hr. For each retinoid, the Hoxa1 expression levels in the cells that were induced by the cognate retinoid in the absence of Corexit-9527 were set to be 1. Values are mean ± s.e.m.; ***, p t-test using two-tailed distribution and unequal variance; n = 4.</p

Effects of a crude oil and an oil dispersant (Corexit 9527) on populations of the littleneck clam (Protothaca staminea)

No full text
Field and laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of Alberta crude oil and an oil dispersant (Corexit 9527) on the larval settlement, survival, siphon activities and behaviour of the littleneck clam (Protothaca staminea). Corexit 9527 was much more toxic than crude oil, and the highest toxicity was obtained when Corexit 9527 was mixed with crude oil. Siphon activities were impaired and abnormal behaviour was exhibited when adult clams were treated with 100 ppm Corexit 9527, 1000 ppm crude oil or a combination of both. Larval settlement was not affected when the substratum was treated with 1000 ppm crude oil but was retarded when the substratum was treated with a mixture of 1000 ppm oil and 100 ppm Corexit 9527. Gas chromatograms also showed that the retention time and depth of penetration of hydrocarbons in the substratum were increased when Corexit 9527 was used with crude oil.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Effect of Chemical Corexit 9527 on 28 Day old TILAPIA GUINEENSIS FINGERLINGS

The toxicity of the chemical Corexit 9527 to 28-day-old freshwater tilapia guineensis fingerlings was studied in the static renewal bioassay glass tank, using tap water. The 28-day-old tilapia guineensis fingerlings collected from Ikpoba Hill River, Edo State were used to access lethal concentrations of the dispersant Corexit 9527. Differential sensitivity of test organisms to Corexit 9527 was observed. This was achieved by predictive application. The LC50 is actually used as an estimate of the incipient lethal level which is also called the lethal threshold concentration, asymptotic LC50, or tolerant limit. The incipient lethal level is the concentration at which half the population will die in an indefinite period of time. It is estimated by the LC50 at that time for no further toxicity has been observed. This steady state LC50 is the incipient lethal level. In fish tests, this often occurs within 4 days, and this is one rationale behind the 96-hour length for a standard acute fish test. The median lethal concentration LC50 of the dispersant Corexit 9527 on tilapia guineensis was determined using a computerized probit analysis according to the methods of Finney. The median lethal concentration, LC50 for the 28-day-old tilapia guineensis was 409.71mg/l and 367.20mg/l for 3 and 4 days respectively. The 28-day-old tilapia guineensis showed a high-level tolerance to lower concentrations of Corexit 9527 and high-level toxicity at the highest concentration which recorded 100% mortality even at a 24-hour exposure period

Toxicity study of the oil dispersant Corexit 9527 on Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) egg hatchability by using a flow-through bioassay technique

No full text
The effect of the oil-spill dispersant Corexit 9527 on egg-hatching rate of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) was studied by using an innovated flow-through bioassay technique. This bioassay method relies on the fact that M. rosenbergii fertilized eggs when detached from the mother prawn were able to hatch artificially. The flow-through system generated a stable and good water quality environment for hatching the eggs successfully. The Corexit 9527 had a pronounced effect on hatching rate of the M. rosenbergii eggs. In the control, the hatching rate of the eggs was 95·55% ± 1·74%. However, it was reduced drastically with increasing concentrations of Corexit 9527. A 100% inhibition of egg hatchability was found when the level of Corexit 9527 was higher than 250 mg litre-1. The EC50 and the EC95 values estimated by the probit method were 80·4 ± 5·5 mg litre-1 and 193·5 ± 39·9 mg litre-1 respectively (P = 0·05). The recommended safety level of Corexit 9527 for M. rosenbergii in Malaysian estuarine waters is below 40 mg litre-1

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
