Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
'Video-View-Point' - Video analysis to reveal tacit indicators of student nurse competence
For over 30 years, the assessment of the clinical competence of student nurses has been the subject of much theoretical debate, yet the definition of criteria based on observable indicators of competence remains problematic. In practice, however, different assessors will judge and agree, relatively quickly, whether a student is competent or not; whether they have got ‘it’. Articulating what ‘it’ is, is difficult; although ‘it’ appears to be collectively, yet tacitly, understood. These judgements provide the key to the definition of competence. This research solves the dilemma of revealing and investigating these tacit understandings through the video analysis of students in simulated practice. The findings of four initial exploratory studies confirmed that competence is an example of tacitly understood behaviour and identified the limitations of traditional research methods in this context. The practical challenges of analysing video were highlighted, leading to the development of Video-View-Point to solve these problems and to reveal the tacitly understood behaviours. This innovative hybrid research method combines analysis of multiple ‘Think Aloud’ commentaries with the ability to ‘point’ at the subject of interest. The analysis is presented as a time-stamped multimedia dialectic, a visually simple yet sophisticated collage of data which reveals relevant behaviours, including those which are tacitly understood. A bespoke software tool (BigSister) was designed to facilitate the data collection, and was tested against the most similar commercially available technology, an eye tracker. The test of Video-View-Point successfully revealed four tacitly understood indicators of competence: communication, processing clinical information, being in the right place, and being proactive. Video-View-Point offers huge potential for behavioural analysis in other domains
Setting the record straight: a rebuttal to an erroneous analysis on transgenic insecticidal crops and natural enemies
While we think that environmental risk assessments of transgenic insect-resistant crops are important, we believe the paper by Lövei et al. (2009) advocates inappropriate summarization and statistical methods, a negatively biased and incorrect interpretation of the published data on non-target effects, and fails to place any putative effect into a meaningful ecological context. Such erroneous analyses do not serve the scientific or regulatory communities. This article is from Transgenic Research 18 (2009): 317, doi: 10.1007/s11248-009-9260-5.</p
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The Q&P heat treatment is a reasonably recent development belonging to the third generation of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) yet in research, having its origin in the automotive industry. This treatment seeks to reach a high fraction of retained austenite with the purpose of producing optimized mechanical properties regards to strength, ductility, and toughness combination. These characteristics, together with the low cost, are part of the reasons for choosing the SAE 9260 steel for the present study. The high silicon content (2%) in this steel inhibits the formation of carbides favoring the carbon migration from martensite to austenite during the partitioning step, allowing greater stabilization of this phase at the end of the process. The present study addresses several parameters (quenching temperature, partitioning temperature and time) of the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatment of SAE 9260 steel by comparing the mechanical properties (hardness, strength, ductility, fracture toughness), and the retained austenite fraction, among themselves and with conventional treatments of quenching/tempering and austempering of the same steel. The definition of the Q&P parameters for the experiments was supported by thermodynamic calculations and studies by other researchers. The best combinations of mechanical properties with Q&P treatment were obtained with partial quenching of 183ºC, partitioning temperature of 400ºC, with a time of 60 seconds. These set of parameters enabled the largest volumetric retained austenite fraction, which reached 21.5%, a PSE (product of strength by elongation) of 42717 MPa x % and a high fracture toughness (50.4 MPa x √m) for a tensile strength of 1801 MPa. All Q&P treatments had a high retained austenite fraction that varied between 11.8 and 21.5%. Several Q&P treatments achieved better combinations of mechanical properties (PSE and fracture toughness) when compared with the conventional heat treatments mentioned. This demonstrates that the Q&P process applied to SAE 9260 steel is promising to expand its industrial applications in which strength and toughness are relevant. The treatment can be carried out easily in conventional heat treatment facilities with salt baths with similar costs, favoring its use
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
