No full textDifferent societies across the globe usually contrast masculinity with femininity. Men are often por-trayed in more positive terms that include being strong, achievers and providers, while women are depicted as the opposite. Such masculinities have emerged to be frameworks within which literary texts can be critiqued. In this article, I employ hegemonic and subordinate masculinities to argue that children’s stories can be utilised to transform unequal gender relations. I explore how Stephen Alu-menda and Jairos Kangira respond to gender issues in Zimbabwean children’s literature. The first sec-tion is a brief introduction that unpacks the concept of children’s literature and places the discussion of gender representation in children’s literature within the context of African literature. In the second segment, I outline how Alumenda endeavours to promote the education of the girl child. The third part highlights how this theme is advanced by Jairos Kangira, another author of children’s books

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
L’ENTOMOLOGIA: UN’OPPORTUNITÀ DIDATTICA
No full textNei programmi delle scuole elementari e nelle pubblicazioni a contenuto scientifico destinate ai bambini, l’approccio all’apprendimento è basato sulla spiegazione di concetti, anche a partire da un’esperienza pratica.
Il presente progetto è invece finalizzato al tentativo di trasmettere a bambini delle scuole elementari concetti scientifici di base, di argomento entomologico, allo stesso modo in cui i bimbi li assorbono dalla vita di tutti i giorni. Lo strumento utilizzato è il racconto, in cui i concetti sono espressi, ma non corredati da alcuna spiegazione didattica.
A tal fine, si sono innanzi tutto individuate le tematiche da trasmettere attraverso i racconti e, tra gli insetti, si sono scelti quelli che meglio permettevano di rappresentarle. Su queste basi, sono stati costruiti i racconti, ciascuno dei quali doveva costituire una storia completa e di fantasia, ma scientificamente corretta.
Al fine di facilitare la comprensione dei concetti esposti e l’identificazione degli insetti trattati nel loro ambiente naturale, ogni racconto è stato illustrato con disegni adatti ai bimbi, ma scientificamente rigorosi, in quanto realizzati a partire da esemplari reali provenienti da raccolte entomologiche e documentazioni fotografiche.
Ogni storia è stata corredata con una scheda in cui i concetti scientifici acquisiti spontaneamente dal bambino tramite la lettura del racconto sono stati precisati con un linguaggio comprensibile e adeguato all’età. Successivamente, sono stati definiti i protocolli per la verifica della comprensione dei testi da parte di bambini delle scuole elementari ed è stato programmato con gli insegnanti il lavoro da realizzare nelle classi elementari.
I test di comprensione hanno previsto a) la lettura del testo da parte dei bambini; b) il rimando alla fine del testo in caso di richiesta di spiegazioni sui termini di difficile comprensione, per verificare se il bambino riesce da solo a evincerne il significato; c) la verifica, a fine lettura, del livello di comprensione del bambino, delle eventuali conoscenze precedenti da lui utilizzate e delle associazioni compiute.
I test di comprensione sono stati eseguiti sugli alunni di tre classi elementari.
I testi delle storie (di cui, nel poster, è fornito un breve esempio) e le schede didattiche sono stati modificati sulla base dei risultati ottenuti

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Folklore and Terror in Georgia’s ‘Notorious’ Pankisi Gorge
No full textOne of the more curious side effects of the ‘branding’ of localities in the War on Terror was the production of certain kinds of fantastic places, such that certain otherwise unremarkable places came to be diagnosed as ‘Terror bases’. This paper explores a dual apperception of this place within two ‘folkloric’ discourses. Within the discourse of Georgian folklore, Pankisi is at best peripheral, within the discourse of the Folklore of Terror, Pankisi briefly became central. Finally I show how the peripherality of Pankisi to ‘the nation’, and centrality to ‘terror’, became a resource for the Georgian State’s legitimation of its own monopoly on violence
