Comparison between BS 8110: Part 1: 1997 and Eurocode 2 for design the reinforced concrete slab
Access is limited to UniMAP community. In European countries, the use of codes of practice Eurocode 2 (EC 2) has been
applied since 2004. However, in Malaysia, BS 8110 is still used for the design of the
building. Thus, the code of practice is being implemented EC 2 slowly and begins with
learning to students in universities. In this study, the objective of research is to compare
the difference in the concept of the design using BS 8110: Part 1 : 1997 and EC 2, to
compare manual calculation and spreadsheet of Microsoft Excel 2007 for 3 types of
slabs and to prepare a spreadsheet for the analysis and design of slabs. The main focus
will focused on the slab, 3 types of slabs to be designed is simply supported one–way
slab, simply supported two-way slab and restrained two-way slab. The design will be
based on the code of practice BS 8110 and Eurocode 2 and the software used is
Microsoft Excel. Therefore, a study was conducted to review the design steps and also
to explain technically on EC 2 design on the slab design. For a better understanding on
EC 2 and BS 8110 design process, a work example of EC 2 and BS 8110 on slab and
comparison of area of reinforcement on several types of slab has been done. In this
research the scope of comparison both of code practice is only focus on area of
reinforcement required and shear resistance with varies of dimension. The result has
indicated that although the design process of EC 2 is more technical but it is easy to use
and understand. The result of research was then show that the area of reinforcement
required while using EC 2 is much lesser than BS 8110
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Comparison of punching shear requirements in BS 8110, EC2 and MC2010
fib Model Code 2010 (MC2010). MC2010 is based on the critical shear crack theory proposed by Muttoni, which relates shear resistance to the width of the so-called ‘critical shear crack’ which depends on slab rotation. Parametric studies are presented that show BS 8110 to require significantly less shear reinforcement within 1·5d (where d is the slab effective depth) of the loaded area than EC2 and MC2010, both of which have been extensively calibrated against test data. This raises the question of whether flat slabs designed to BS 8110 have an adequate factor of safety against punching failure. This question is explored using nonlinear finite-element modelling in conjunction with MC2010 Level IV. It is shown that punching resistance at internal columns can be increased significantly by restraint from the surrounding slab but the strength increase is variable and, in the case of uniformly loaded slabs, already largely included in BS 8110 and EC2
Design of reinforced concrete beams using euorocode 2 and bs 8110
Eurocodes will become mandatory under the Singapore prescribed building codes for structural design of buildings and civil engineering works with effect on 1st April 2015. This signifies a need for the people in Singapore that are related to civil engineering works to comprehend the phase of transition from British Standards to Eurocodes. Thus, this report aims to analyse and evaluate the comparison of shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement against experimental beam data using Eurocode 2 and BS 8110.
In addition, the present study will focus on normal strength concrete and high strength concrete beams without shear reinforcement with shear-span to depth ratio of 2.5 to 7. Furthermore, 4 major parameters will be evaluated for the effect of shear strength on reinforced concrete beams. The 4 parameters have been proven by previous research to have noteworthy influence on the shear behaviour of concrete beams, namely: concrete compressive strength, shear-span to depth ratio, effective depth and longitudinal reinforcement ratio. A total of 163 experimental beam specimens comprising of 91 normal-strength concrete beams and 72 high-strength concrete beams were extracted to compare with the predicted shear capacity using Eurocode 2 and BS 8110.
In order to determine the predicted shear capacity values of Eurocode 2 and BS 8110, the development of an excel spreadsheet was essential to calculate the shear capacity based on the design criteria from the two design codes. These calculated shear values were used in comparison with the experimental values provided in previous respective journals to evaluate BS 8110 and Eurocode 2. From the analysis of general statistical comparison, Eurocode 2 and BS 8110 display similar results for normal strength and high strength concrete beams. Further investigation, the results also illustrate the influence of concrete compressive strength, shear-span to depth ratio, effective depth and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the shear strength of normal strength and high strength concrete beams.
In conclusion, Eurocode 2 appears to be highly accurate and should possess the ability to produce normal-strength concrete beams that are more economical. However, except for longitudinal reinforcement ratio, both Eurocode 2 and BS 8110 show a down trend in safety margin for the design of shear capacity for high-strength concrete beams. Thus, more research has to be done for high strength concrete beams as the design codes appear to be not conservative for the effect of increasing concrete compressive strength, longer shear-span to depth ratio and larger effective depth.Bachelor of Engineering (Civil

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
